Female vocalist Mary Clayton was called after midnight to come to the studio to record a backing vocal track. She was very pregnant at the time and showed up, in her words, in fur with curlers in her hair. She nailed it in two takes and went back home. She miscarried the next day and is haunted still because of the loss of her child. This adds another layer to the menace to the song. Her vocal crack/break defines the song.

This was out during the Viet Nam war. The stories coming out of that war were tearing the country apart, as the constant coverage on the tv showed the suffering of the Viet Namese people and what our soldiers were being turned into by the things they saw and had to do. On the last "murder" when Mary Claytons voice cracks you can hear Mick shouting "Hey!" in the background in appreciation of her giving her all to the song.

As one of those who have been with the band since the early 60s, I gotta say this is a strange entry point. But what the hell, you're here now and that's what counts. I and my boomer peers are absolutely dying to unload so much information on you. The Stones were one of the most influential bands of the 60s. They were one of THE progenitors of modern rock & roll. An American Songwriter article stated, “We randomly phoned up this poor lady [Merry Clayton] in the middle of the night, and she arrived in her curlers and proceeded to do that in one or two takes, which is pretty amazing. She came in and knocked off this rather odd lyric." The Socio/political scene and the absolutely musical giftedness of the crew writing and recording this track is legendary. So cool that you are exploring these jams and sharing that journey with others. Enlightenment is not soley for the individual, but heightens everyone in their sphere.

OH MAN!!!!!! I am a fifty year old English white boy who everybody LAUGHED AT for loving this music when I was a kid. It was like 20 years old even in those days. I ADORED IT AND I STILL DO! Those Rolling Stones went out and soaked themselves in old old RnB music that no-one had heard of (I'm talking Howlin Wilf etc) then got wasted, then produced this magic. Is there really any whitey music anywhere else this good? They got rhythm from the black old-timers. Charlie Watts the drummer was a jazz drummer, but anchored a rock band! The singer was apparently heavily pregnant and got called in to the studio on a whim with no notice, and produced an utterly timeless performance with THAT voice crack to end all voice cracks. Next songs should be Paint it Black (you will be shocked the you know this song as it's been parts of many ads, videos games, and movies), and Sympathy for the Devil. Before Sympathy, read about Altamont Raceway Park first. It's a really sad story but I believe is important to the history of the song and the Stones in general. Then go down the rabbit hole. Honky Tonk Women, Satisfaction, Under my Thumb, Wild Horses, Jumpin Jack Flash, Brown Sugar and that doesn't even get you to Some Girls! :-) BTW: I was lucky enough to them live 3 times - 1978 JFK in Philly, 1981 Capitol Centre Wash DC and JFK again. I recommend Sounds of Silence - it was on their 1964 debut LP. Nearly 60 years later, it's message is still true.

"I'm gonna relive that whole thing again . . ." Not just listen, but RE-LIVE. I've loved this song since the day it dropped, but watching you hear it for the first time gave me chills. Thank you.

Man, good music, is good music. Good people are good people. To me the 60's, and 70's music has soul. That blues beat.

What a fantastic introduction to the Stones - my favorite of their entire catalog. Other top songs are Sympathy for the Devil, and Shattered (New Yorkers love the latter).

I grew up listening to these great songs in the early 70's and I used to sing along but had no idea what the songs meant at the time. I still get chills when I hear that great intro to this song.. I love The Rolling Stones and Wild Horses is another great tune!! Thanks for another great reaction!

As a child of 70s rock radio, I haven't heard a fraction of the R&B and rap that you know about! We're all just trying to expand our musical horizons here.

I have been listening to the Stones since 63. I have all the early albums. Listen to 12x5, very early album. They cover Chuck Berry and many blues players. The Get yer Ya Yas Out album is one the great live albums ever. My 2 favorite songs on that album are Sympathy for the Devil and Love in Vain. The latter is a cover of Robert Johnson, father of the blues. Enjoy Steve
