You're going to get a lot of love from Canadians by playing The Hip! They have a wide variety of tracks from flat-out rock bangers to soft and haunting ballads. The majority of the songs from The Tragically Hip are slice of life stories, with a lot of Canadian history thrown in.

In 1970, the terrorist organization Freedom Liberation Quebec (FLC) kidnapped the provincial deputy premier, Pierre Laporte, executed him and his body was found later in the trunk of a car. All of Canada, was put under marshal law with a curfew for about a month by Pierre Trudeau even though the threat was clearly only in Quebec. This song ties that event to archeology of a Native American who had been murdered by the Spanish. Great song, as with all hip songs, it could have used another verse as Gord's imagery and words are so unique and deeply missed in popular music.

Not sure if this was mentioned already, this allegories a true story. An act of domestic terrorism in Canada. If you want some Canadian histoire, look up the FLQ crisis. Like all Hip songs it’s interwoven with a lot of story telling and Canadiana. Love it. Thanks for listening to this one.

Some of my tragically hip favourites are Bobcaygeon, Killer whale Tank, Nautical disaster & Fully Completely but the best being Wheat Kings- The hip was a Canadian folklore band and all they’re songs relate to Canadian history.. the lead singer passed away in October of 2017 but preformed a country wide tour that year while he had brain cancer, the last show was broadcasted to the whole country... more then 12 million people watched it from they’re homes and they’re were 100,000 people at the venue. Truly a life changing band. Rest In Peace Gord.

The Lead Singer, Gord Downie, is probably one of the best lyricist in all of rock/pop music, ever. This song ties two events, the 1970 killing of Quebec's deputy premier, Pierre Laporte by the FLQ - a terrorist organization. They executed him and the police found his body... in the trunk of a car. It also highlights the finding of remains of a Native American killed by Spanish Conquistadors in the 1500. The bands name, "The Tragically Hip" foreshadowed the lead singer, Gord Downie's tragic death. Gord Downie passed away in 2017 from the worst kind of brain cancer you can get, Glioblastoma. He could've just lived his last years quietly with his sickness, but he decided he wanted to do one last tour with his band mates. Very Tragic. Their last concert ever was in Kingston, Ontario - their home town. Understandably, it wasn't their best show as he was deteriorating, but they pulled it off. He had the lyrics to his song all over the stage to help get him through. Very sad. I don't think that he could've managed even 1 more show in truth - he quite literally rocked with his friends to the very end. He passed away just over a year later on October 17, 2017.

And how the dumper's guilt is forcing them to also relive the experience from the perspective of the person who was locked in the trunk. Love how the intro of the "Let me out!" section (which now has both a literal and figurative meaning) sounds like someone banging on the inside of a locked trunk, and how it isn't explicitly pointed-out that the person in the trunk was still alive for the hellish transport. The beginning bit of "They don't know how old I am/they found armor in my belly/16th century/Conquistador, it seems" is about the croc who disposed of the body in the "dark and rotted" place, and how the area has a long history as an informal graveyard for lost souls. The setting seems to suggest Louisiana or similar environs, but it's never specified.
@michaelccozens
@michaelccozens Год назад
@@brently16 Mmmm, not sure about that. I can see the connection, but the Hip tend to be more explicit when they're referring to real historical events. Also, IIRC, the FLQ left the body of the kidnapped and murdered official in the trunk of the car they abandoned, as they wanted it found for political reasons (they had already announced the death of the hostage, which was later determined to likely have been the unintentional result of a struggle. As he was already dead, the FLQ decided to use the death to demonstrate their seriousness to the government). So there wasn't a lot of "dumping" of the sort suggested in the song, where you try to obscure the evidence of a murder, not display it. If I'm mistaken in my assumptions about which events you're referring to, my apologies.

In the past, Gord Downie has said that dumping the body every day is a metaphor for continuing a relationship that had grown bitter and loveless. That it’s work every day to drag around something that is already cold and lifeless. Hence the outro screaming, “Let me out!” It’s an evocative metaphor.

I grew up and tranformed to this bands music growing up in Northwest Ontario this wasone of the soundtracks. You havent heard anything if you havent walked home in -30 with this blasting on your walkman.

The Hip has always been on the playlist at the cottage since 1988 nothing like The Hip playing with friends sitting around the campfire with them playing as we shoot the breeze and drink some wobbly pops great times I can smell the wood burning and hear the haunting call of the Loon out on the lake great times still today.

It’s about the kidnapping of a politician who was later found dead in the trunk of a car…the FLQ ..1970’s….Montreal was under martial law for a few months…scary times

Pierre Laporte! I remember the Martial law .. I lived in Montreal at the time…it was strange to see army vehicles in the streets…

Another way to look at the lyrics is from his soul's perspective, trying to evolve beyond the physical. It's the soul trying to dump the body it's trapped in.

Funny watching BJ bob his head while listening, similar to how Gord would move his head on stage.
