The Who = Mostly-controlled Chaos. Keith Moon was one of my inspirations to become a drummer, the other was Ian Paice of Deep Purple. Moon's drumming was all over the place, Townshend's guitar playing inspired a lot of young guitarists, Entwhistle always looked like the calm one of the group - all while playing some of the most extreme bass lines, and Daltrey's vocals were always wonderful to hear...even his raspy screams. Check out more of their stuff and you'll find some wonderful songs to listen to.

I'm not sure if you've watched any of the "CSI" TV shows, but one of their songs got used as the theme to that respective show. For the one that started it, "CSI: Crime Scene Investigation", they use "Who Are You?", "Won't Get Fooled Again" is for "CSI:Miami", "Baba O'Riley" in "CSI: New York", and "I Can See For Miles" in "CSI: Cyber". The one that's currently on the air, "CSI: Vegas", is a follow-up to the original series, so they use "Who Are You?" for that as well. At one point during the original series, lead singer Roger Daltrey made a guest appearance.

The first time I saw The Who was July 6, 1989 at RFK Stadium in Washington DC on their 25th anniversary tour. It was an absolutely amazing show. Local radio station, WCXR, held a banner contest where they would select the two people with the best homemade banner that mentioned the radio station and The Who to be moved to the tenth row, center stage. And that's how the young lady I went with and I got moved from nearly the last row of the nosebleed section on the other side of the stadium down to the 10th row.

Kennedy Stadium more than two months before the concert date. It also was the 20th anniversary of the Tommy album, so there were significant parts of the album in the show that hadn't been performed on tour in more than 18 years. In addition, the kids of the Vice-President of the U.S. at the time (Dan Quayle) were at this show in a mezzanine level box, chaperoned by their mother, Mrs. Marilyn Quayle.

Another explanation for the stutter is there were two different and mutually antagonistic youth cultures in England at the time: Mods and Rockers. Rockers listened to Gene Vincent and wore black leather jackets and blue jeans, worked mostly blue collar jobs like auto mechanics. Mods dressed sharper, suit and tie but with a green wartime over coat on top, rode scooters, and worked entry level white collar jobs. Mod also were known to take amphetamines to juggle their day jobs with their night time partying, so quite often developed that characteristic amphetamine stutter. The Who were a well known Mod band back in the day.

It depicts the Mod v/s Rocker culture of the mid 1960's and a series of riots between the two groups in 1964 in a variety of seaside towns. It's based on a rock-opera of the same name, and is considered to be semi-autobiographical to the band. Diane, you couldn’t do better than The Who’s “My Generation” to represent the fast, mod, style of mid-60’s England and the upcoming social tensions and clashes to come in both England and the USA. The Who was driven by a lot of incredible talent and a lot of inner conflict and before they were done broke barriers and set standards and precedents for Rock that created possibilities for decades to come. Would there ever been Queen without The Who, would Bohemian Rhapsody ever been written without Tommy and Pinball Wizard? So many amazing hits but their performances is a major part of they’re impact. Woodstock, would have happened without them, but would Woodstock have had the same impact without The Who? Love your reaction to it! I can totally see you in mid clothes visiting London in the 60’s. Thanks for sharing this. I’m not sure I’ve seen this video before. I suspect it was put together later after the single/album was released. The Who also put out an album that was a rock opera called “Tommy”. It was about a deaf, mute, and blind kid. One of the cuts was “Pinball Wizard”. It was a two-record album; so there were four sides. It was made into a movie

Such a foreign concept to me. Doesn't fall very short of "the first time I drew breath." Not meant as shaming, I just fall into the age group where you couldn't help but know them. I became aware of music after they became big, but they were also big for years after.

I'd guess that their most famous song from The Who would be _"Won't Get Fooled Again"_ off the album _"Who's Next"._ That album has several really *great* songs on it. They were also famous for the rock opera called _"Tommy"._ That's where the song _"Pinball Wizard"_ really comes from, although if you've heard that song then you've probably heard the version done by Elton John for the movie version of _"Tommy"._

I saw them on their farewell tour before you were born, but they re-formed less than ten years later. They had said they wouldn't play this song again, because it didn't feel right to sing about dying before they got old, as they neared their 40's. They played two nights, one at a stadium, then at the adjacent arena. We expected the same opening song for the second show, but they opened with My Generation, and the 10000+ fans screamed in approval.

6:06 The BBC and other English radio stations refused to play a majority of 60s early rock music. Rock n roll radio stations in Britain had to transmit from ships in the North Sea in International waters. There was an excellent movie called The Boat That Rocked (Pirate Radio) about these rogue rock n roll radio stations. Highly recommend watching the movie.

@TR4200 In the 1960s there was a TV series with actor Patrick McGoohan known as "Secret Agent Man" (it also had a different title, "Danger Man"), there was one episode of the series where the character Drake (McGoohan) worked (secretly, of course) as a pirate deejay off the coast of England.

@@TR4200 It appears that the pirate deejay episode of the Danger Man series (it was called Secret Agent Man in North America) somehow became the last never seen, new episode of the series that was ever to be shown. I gave it a look, the only other time I had seen it was a rerun in the late '70s. I gave a look at some histories of pirate radio on you tube and it took me by surprise just how realistic the debonair character that owned the fictional Radio Jolly Roger on the Danger Man episode was, as were the songs on the episode as well. It said on the episode's closing credits they were provided technical help from the actual 1960s period Radio 390 station. Not to get too off topic, but I remember another episode of the series where the Drake character infiltrated the world of fandom in what's known in the 21st century as the football Premier League (of soccer).

Diane! Lovely reaction. I grew up in Detroit which was one of the first cities in the US to sprout a huge Who fan base starting like in the mid 1960s. The Who were very much British working class guys and the music resonated with the working class ethos in Detroit. We had a very forward local music promoter who heard their records and somehow booked them in a local high school auditorium and another venue in nearby Ann Arbor. Once they achieved superstar status whenever The Who played in the Detroit Metropolitan area Pete Townsend never failed to acknowledge Detroit fans for adopting them as their own so early in their careers. You will still meet Who fans who hold their Southfield High School ticket stubs from when The Who played there in 1967 or people who caught them at The Fifth Dimension in Ann Arbor (University of Michigan) a few days later. Or people who caught them at The Grande Ballroom in 1968 and 1969.

Something you have to keep in mind hearing this song is the fact that, to a lot of people, feedback as a musical tool was still completely new - in fact people were still getting used to guitar effects like tremolo (and forget flanging, that could only be done in the studio by phase-shifting tapes). The previous Who single had a crazily intense feedback/tremolo-based guitar/drum break in the middle, and this song - besides being a generational statement of (intended) independence - cemented the Who's reputation as the noisiest band of their day. Assaultive noise and their countercultural message were inseparable in the minds of many. I will maintain to the last that every Who recording from the 1964-70 period is worth hearing - after that it's decidedly touch-and-go. Throwaway comment - According to some sources, the Who were the only band Pink Floyd ever socialised with. Makes sense, what with both bands being led from the sidelines by a particular "big-nosed whiny-voiced grumpy bastard with a World War Two fixation".

See? You did know the song! You know more than you think you do. All of the CSI shows have theme songs by The Who: CSI: Las Vegas (the original CSI show): Who Are You? CSI: Miami: Won't Get Fooled Again. CSI: NY: Baba O'Reilly CSI: Cyber: I Can See for Miles Any of these would be good to react to. Other Who songs you might want to check out include Pinball Wizard and See Me Feel Me. The Assembled Multitude did a really good version of the Overture from Tommy (better that The Who's version, IMO). I mentioned on Patreon that there was a different band called The Guess Who. They were never as big as The Who, and their style was very different. They did some really good songs, though. A few of their best are These Eyes, Undun, No Time, and American Woman. It's hard to know what to suggest because I don't know what you're already familiar with, but how about The Beach Boys? They're another *HUGE* band from the 60s with a lot of songs you might recognize, if only because they've been used in movie soundtracks. Some you might want to react to: Fun, Fun, Fun; I Get Around; Help Me, Rhonda; California Girls; Barbara Ann; Wouldn't It Be Nice? IMO, their best song is Good Vibrations. Thanks!
