I had a feeling Alexis would love Rush and we chose Tom Sawyer as her first song introduction. The layered sounds combined with thundering bass, elegant guitar and Neil Peart legendary drum section make this one of Rush’s most recognizable songs.

RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary

Neil Peart was not a drummer. He was a percussionist. There is a difference. John Bonham was a drummer and the best. He literally changed drumming and how music that had drummers progressed. Peart was a percussionist and put all other percussionists to shame so much so, he had less impact on music because percussionists did not want to be compared to him.

Great to found out many decades later.. I was a Cool girl for loving RUSH. When I was younger they thought I was strange & kinda nerdy for a Metalhead/ Rush Fan. Blessed to have seen them Countless times live.

Alexis correctly identified that Neil had a whole bunch of stuff in his drum kit. There were more than 5 "round parts" and a lot of "metal parts"

I saw them live 27 times from the 70's to their final show in Toronto June 19, 2015 and every second of every show was fantastic, out of this world. The musicianship and everything about this band is/was outstanding. Please have a look at their last rcording, "The Garden".

Love the interaction between father and child, celebrating my lifeline, music. Much respect for both, Daughter willing to "listen" and appreciate, father, for sharing some of the most talented, musician based music in our history. ❤ to you both. I've got many, many suggestions. 😉👍🏻

Welcome to the Rush club, Alexis! I’m excited for your journey. 😂 Please dive in more, you will be so glad you did. I’m 60 and have listened to them since I was 15-16. And it never gets old. They are musicians’ musicians and I’m glad you recognize their talent/virtuosity. Alex is my personal fav guitarist. I was truly sad when Neil died. Yes, Burch, Rush Girls rule and they were Unicorns! 😆 I can hear your admiration for them in your voice and on see it on your face.

Most people react strongly to Geddy's voice the first time they hear it. When I heard Rush for the first time (Tom Sawyer), my reaction was "What the hell is this?!". But I kept listening to that album and it just got better and better. Pretty soon Rush was my favorite band. Still is to this day. Saw them at least once every tour since 1986, right up to the end.

"Layed back group..." When they opened for KISS back in the 70's, after the show KISS was wondering why their hotel room was so quiet compared to theirs, and when they went to their room, the 3 of them were relaxing reading books. Neil Peart (drummer) is nicknamed The Professor

Neil was incredible !!! When I saw him in concert he had two huge drum sets, one in front of him and one in back) and he swivelled back and forth to both drum sets throughout the show. His timing was perfect & impeccable and as you were watching him do his drum solo right there in front of you at a live show you would find it unbelievable that anyone could actually play like that !!!

Le Studio in Morin Heights Quebec was one of the most beautiful recording studios around. I was lucky enough to get to go inside before it was retired. I was also lucky enough to see Rush before Neil passed away. Very big loss. Thanks for the video.

I listened to Rush, beginning in the 70's. Growing up in the Toronto area and going to school in Toronto, you couldn't miss hearing them on local radio stations. I even knew a guy who installed and set-up Geddy Lee's high end stereo system in the 90's. While they were never my favourite band, I loved their stuff. They didn't pander to anyone. They simply did their thing; and that's one reason why their fans love them so much. Awesome talent!

That transition, where each instrument had it's own part - was where most guys blew their car speakers by cranking up the volume. At least we could replace them easily enough back then!!!
