“Early morning, April 4…..a shot rings out in the Memphis Sky…..Free at last, they took your life….they could not take your Pride” - One of the most powerful and meaningful lyrics of any song at any time.

The song contains the erroneous reference to King's shooting as "Early morning, April 4," when it actually occurred after 6 p.m. Bono acknowledges the error and in live performances he often changes the lyric to "Early evening..."[

This was a great pick for MLK Day. U2 was one of the biggest bands in the world during the 80s, 90s and beyond. They are legendary and I'm always surprised when I hear that there are folks who never heard of them. They are from Ireland and so much like The Cranberries, who I think you have reacted to before, there will be songs that have lyrics pertaining to the political unrest that is a huge part of Ireland's history when you dive into U2. Bono, is the singer and many of his lyrics are deep or serious. As you can see, he's also got a hell of a voice. I can recommend 20 U2 hits to you, but I always tell every reactor the same thing with this band. Please react to "Bad" from the Live Aid performance, 1985 I believe. Hope mama is doing well today. It's strange to see the empty seat beside you.

One positive thing that has come out of this terrible pandemic is that in my spare time, I have discovered this genre of RU-vid videos where people discover and react to new music. I really do enjoy it, especially when the reviewers are younger people. I notice that most of them seem to very much enjoy many of the bands that I grew up with! There have been 'big bands' over the years, but U2 have always been monolithic among them. They will always be interesting I think for anyone who discovers them as they have always had an indescribable "X Factor" to them that is difficult to describe but fun to debate. As a band to react to, I think you could get a lot of mileage from them since they have been around for a very long time now and many of us have grown up with them. Over the decades, we have watched them grow from teens who could barely play their instruments to the seasoned musicians they are now that regularly evolve, experiment, fail, succeed and flourish. They are absolutely the elder statesmen of their genre but they still create and remain a touring juggernaut. They frankly did a lot for the industry; their music, business partnerships and live shows regularly broke new ground (a U2 tour is an event in itself - these guys have been filling stadiums since the 80s). Their sound has dabbled in post-punk, nuwave, anthemic Americana, rhythm and blues, cyberpunk/industrial, dance and just straight-forward rock. I'll be interested to see your reaction if you choose to explore them further. Cheers !

@@christywright4113 So, it's funny when they refer to U2 as if they were a band from the 80s. I've followed them since the beginning and, at least here in Brazil, they fill a football stadium for 4 days in a row in São Paulo, with updated music until today. By the way, I went on The Joshua Tree tour in 2017 and checked it out with new music.

@Patricia R P Oh, they still sell out stadiums here in the US, too. And they had some huge hits in the 90s as well as 2000s. So I find it strange, too. Especially since they were once again the biggest rock band in the world in 2001. But the music industry is always driven by young stars w/ sex appeal. So it makes sense that people would associate them by the decade in which they broke out-and not now that they’re so much older. But they are rock legends no matter what happens from here on out. Cheers from the U.S.

Pride (In the Name of Love) is ultimately about the courage to make change without resorting to violence, but through peace, and ultimately giving up your life for that cause. U2 grew up in Northern Ireland during the Troubles , a time of sectarian violence between religious groups. So the gravity of effecting change without violence, but through peace, is important to U2. This song commemorates MLK and Jesus Christ.

Here's what I found on the name "U2": "In March 1978, the group changed their name to "U2". Steve Averill, a punk rock musician (with the Radiators) suggested six potential names from which the band chose U2 for its ambiguity and open-ended interpretations." The most widely accepted interpretation of it is "U2" is based on their philosophy. They believe that the audience is part of their music and the concert and that "you too" are participating in the music."

This song is about MLK and all others who have been martyred for their strong belief and acts in the name of love. Aside from the verse about Dr. King, he also refers to Mahatma Gandhi and Jesus in the song, tying them together as soldiers for peace and non-violent social change. U2 came out of Ireland in the 1980s, which was being torn by a lot of brutal political violence, including bombings and shootings. So this song represents a reaction to that violence, "In the Name of Love."

Written about Martin Luther King Jr., "Pride" received mixed critical reviews at the time, but it was a major commercial success for U2 and has since become one of their most popular songs. Irish rock band U2 performed the song, along with "City of Blinding Lights", to upwards of 400,000 people on 18 January 2009 at the We Are One concert at the Lincoln Memorial to celebrate the upcoming inauguration of Barack Obama. Paul David Hewson, lead vocalist (born 10 May 1960), known by his stage name Bono (/ˈbɒnoʊ/), is an Irish singer-songwriter, activist, and philanthropist.

U2 are one of the biggest rock bands in history. Simply love them. FYI, U2 collab w/ Kendrick Lamar on their most recent album for some outro/intro verses by the rapper. Kendrick then featured U2’s lead singer Bono on the hook of his track XXX. They performed together at the Grammy’s that year. U2 have also collaborated through the decades with many artists, such as Mary J Blige, BB King, Johnny Cash, and Luciano Pavarotti.

I remember that event vividly in my mind, my soul, being 18 years old and thinking, wondering why I felt such anger upon hearing the news. Then, two months &two days later, RFK is assassinated just a couple hundred miles south of where I lived back then. Graduation practice that morning in June was a blur. It was a heavy fog we entered into and we haven't really come out of! Losing MLK&RFK in such swift succession was horrific and it has stuck with me all my life. Jfk was a blow when I was 13 so I'd already had a taste, but, I started thinking good ppl just aren't supposed to win in this world. You keep up the good works and give your family a hug. We all deserve it and you deserve. Let's all be good to each other, and, if course, it always starts at home! ❤🤜🤛

Two other songs with really deep meaning behind them are Sunday, Bloody, Sunday and New Years Day. You really need to check out those two. The talent of this band both in writing and the musical sense is awesome.

U2 have many great tunes. Rockers and slower ones. The lead singer goes by Bono, the guitarist is The Edge, Adam Clayton on bass and Larry Mullen Jr on drums.

Bono is the lead singer. The Edge is guitarist. These same 4 guys have Bern together for 30 some years. That's quite a feat. Their nickname was the biggest band in the world and for like 20 some years they were.

U2 is named after the spy plane used in ww2.. Bono the singer liked it because it meant crossing borders, therefore to everybody..(he felt U2's music should get to everybody).. Being a spy plane it could evade radar and, land in your lap, like a U2 album.... Bono is an Irish man(which means in German.' voice box.') is the singer. Adam Clayton is an Englishman that grew up in Dublin with all the other members of the band. The Edge is guitar. Larry Mullen Jr. is on the kit.......He started the band in high school when he put up a poster for band mates.......the boys showed up and jammed in Larry's kitchen

This version of Sunday Bloody Sunday -Live From Red Rocks Amphitheatre, Colorado / 1983 - Oh my god, this concert changed my life. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-EM4vblG6BVQ.html or the "hidden version" at ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-nJ7pczp0-JE.html that has more footage. Literally. I was 23 and barely knew who U2 was. My friend and I. I miss her. It was raining so hard, we got soaked and we didn't care. I clapped, I sang, I swayed, I hugged and I cried. I think we all walked away from that concert forever changed. Bono did his best to change the world. A more caring musician than you could ever imagine. And Red Rocks is still the best concert venue in the world.

U2 comes from the American spy plane shot over Russia back in tge day. U2 are from Dublin, first wa called the larry mullins band after the drummer who put a poster up in school and then was called feedback after the sound of the speakers lol. Best band ever, grew up about 20 mins walk in Dublin hahahaha. Boy..their first album i still think one of the best albums

(Taken from another comment) Here is which persons are meant: "One man caught on a barbed wire fence" - Dietrich Bonhoeffer - as mentioned by Wardo and Stadt "One man he resist" - Mahatma Ghandi "One man washed on an empty beach" - Roger Casement - an Irish revolutionary who was betrayed by the Germans shortly before the Irish Eastern Rising of 1916. He was left on a beach, too sick to travel and was caught by the English who executed him after a controversial trial. "One man betrayed with a kiss" - Jesus betrayed by Judas " One man to overthrow" - Malcolm X

MLK was Bono lead singer's hero growing up. U2 will not play Memphis because MLK died there. They go there but that's all. The band grew up in Ireland where there was constant bombing. It is called The Troubles in Ireland. Look it up. Bono was almost blown up. He has saved at least 3 million lives in Africa. He works hard to do good. When he is not off being a rock star. They still fill stadiums all over the world.

i stole this statement but its accurate to what i know :) ..."It’s probably enough to mention that lead singer Bono was nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize, yet a look at U2’s impact in the past 30 years reveals far more, including much needed attention brought to the struggle in Northern Ireland (Sunday Bloody Sunday), devotion to promoting civil rights (Pride), promotion of Amnesty International in their albums and at their concerts, and most recently, leading the charge against poverty and disease in Africa."
