Jon Anderson is the magical voice of Yes. This song is an exception because Trevor created the genius guitar signature, so he began as the lead voice. Jon Anderson and Alan White, the drummer, were also credited as writers. The song was about the direction the band was taking because of pressure from their label, which they didn't welcome (changes) . Go down the Yes rabbit hole, especially the early 70s songs, and you won't be disappointed!

Jon Anderson was just a background singer while the "Yes tour 1984", the singer/guitarist was Trevor Rabin. The whole album even wasn´t planned as a "Yes" album but as a "Cinema" album. I hate this commercial bullshit, the "non Howe" Yes group "Anderson, Bruford, Wakeman, Howe" was soo much more "Yes" than this one.

@zimbo There have been so many different members of Yes, I'm tired of the Howe/Rabin drama. There's place for both. Howe is also responsible for booting Jon out of "Yes" since he's the title holder. Ridiculous. ABWH was some of the worst IMHO

The guy in the back is Jon Anderson and has been the lead singer of Yes since their beginning but Trevor joined in the early 80s and has a contributed lead vocals to a few as well.

90215 was huge my freshman year in college. Every time I listen to the songs I get that feeling of being away from home for the first time in my life. Yes is similar to The Moody Blues in that they began as Prog Rock Royalty but managed to find Pop success in the 80’s. You will never go wrong with Yes, no matter which era you choose.

Asia, as a singer, if you would like to see this lineup of this legendary band REALLY show out with some fantastic harmony vocals, you've got to check out "Leave It" from this same album. To really get your money's worth, find a recording that segues directly from the intro, a short instrumental called "Cinema," straight into this. Satisfaction guaranteed. Trust me, I was a vocal major. LOL

First of all, greetings from good ol' Germany, and thank you so much for your great reaction to this Yes favorite of mine, much appreciated!!! 👍👍👍 To answer your question about the odd time signature at the beginning and the end of the song, it is a 17/8 time signature. That means the pattern consists of 17 eighth notes (a.k.a. "quavers" in British English). For practical reasons, you might want to split this up into a 7/8 and a 10/8 pattern. That'd make you count and clap along to it like: 1-2-3-4-5-6-7-1-2-3-4-5-6-7-8-9-10 and then repeating it from the top over and over again. However, for me, being a drummer for about 38 years (no braggin' intended, I swear 😇), I love the idea of teaching odd rhythms like this to kids by using words that go along with the groove. For instance, this 17/8 signature could be verbalized like this: "Hello Kitty, Stranger Things, Hello Kitty, Walking Dead, Stranger Things" Well ... there might be better word combinations to depict this rhythm, but the bottom line is, it makes a total of 17 syllables = 17 eighth notes. You see? 😉 Now, where are my pills ...? 😅

I admit that I was a late lover of Yes... until this album. I was 18 years old when this album came out, and I absolutely LOVED the sound of all the songs on this album. Of course, after this release I went back and REALLY listened to their earlier albums. These guys were awesome! Nice reaction A & B :)

The lead singer is Jon Anderson, the guy in the back wearing white - he's 78 now but touring and sounding in top form. But for this song the guitarist Trevor Rabin sang lead. On the album this song is on, the band had reformed, and the guitarist wrote the whole album, but the rest of the guys had input later. Yes is still together, but doesn't have any of the guys in this video in it, they have had a lot of member changes since 68'. 70's Yes is usually considered the best.

Wow! Now that’s a blast from the past. That’s a very young Trevor Rabin on guitar and vocals. Your right Asia, the actual lead singer is Jon Anderson (without the guitar) This album was a successful departure for Yes. Heavily influenced by Rabin, the songs were shorter, radio friendly more pop “ish,” if that’s possible for Yes. 90210 was one of the most successful albums of the 80’s. Your reaction to the songs’ time signature hit you like it did the rest of us. Completely unique. Try their live performance (with Trevor) of “Heart of the Sunrise.” It’s top shelf. Love the channel guys! 🤘😎

@@Cchan53 I get it. I loooove Jon Anderson, but I'm young enough (47 haha) to have grown up listening to both eras. They are a distinctly different band with Rabin. Of course, the same sort of thing happened with Rush, who changed their sound (though not their lineup) dramatically in the 80s.

You have to do the original Yes band!! Musical geniuses! This is a later band who only have one original band member, John Anderson, the singer you are calling the backround singer, he is the lead singer for most of the history of the band! Try Roundsbout, close to the edge, starship trooper, wondrous stories! Please do an original Yes song with the original members, sooo far ahead of their time back in the 70’s!!❤️

Hey guys not sure if anyone else has already said this or not, but the part you were asking about, the intro, was done in whats called synchopation...its where different notes are emphasized to make that unique sound/ tempo feel...so if the 1st and 4th note are the stronger notes (4:4 timing) instead they may emphasize the third or 1st and 3rd notes that are the "weaker" notes. Its a cool effect for sure😊

It would take about an hour to tell you the personnel history of Yes, but what you’re seeing here is the 80’s version of the band. The guy singing in the back is original singer Jon Anderson. Singer/writer/ guitarist Trevor Rabin had just joined the band, and added a 2nd lead vocalist. Jon wasn’t always positioned in the back, but for this song he was. Yes has a long history which began back in 1968. And the band (at least in name) is still active today. I believe the vast majority of older fans (like myself) consider the 70’s to be their “classic” years. I’ve had the pleasure of seeing them 25 times over the years. An absolutely incredible assembly of talent! There’s soooooooo much ground to cover regarding Yes, so I’ll stop here. As I said, it would take a while to cover everything! Glad you liked what you heard!

Trevor Rabin is the guitar/ vocals he replaced the immortal Steve Howe for most of the eighties. He is a brilliant underrated guitarist. The main vocals is Jon Anderson.

This is great performance to those that know the song. You should really hear the studio version. You get all nuances and great production. This was the 80's Pop Prog Rock version of YES. The band started in the 70's as one of the more popular Prog Rock bands. There was some drama and fighting amongst the members of the band. They even fought over who could use the name YES. They eventually all joined forces for the "Union" album and tour. "Lift Me Up" is a great song off the album. Some more 80's YES: "Rhythm Of Love" "Owner Of A Lonely Heart" "Hold On" "It Could Happen" "Leave it" "Aim High, Shoot Low" "Love Will Find A Way"

Man he was playing the heck out of that guitar. I'm going to paraphrase "Capitalize on his good fortune, one word can bring you 'round, Changes!!!. One word to loneliness, One word to happiness, one word can bring you 'round. Changes!!!" Love YES, saw them in concert in 1984. Along with Genesis. Awesome is all I can say!!!

This was cool! I really like the extended version of their hit "Leave It." Great classic band. John Anderson was one of their singers (the blonde) and then he collaborated with Tangerine Dream to do the song "Loved By The Sun" for the film Legend (1985). The beginning and end are in odd time. I can count 5 in there like it’s in 5/8 alternating with 10/8 possibly. 8/8 or 4/4 (regular time) describes the main body of the song.

Asia and BJ!! What's up, kids? I love Yes. What a song I had their albums in my younger days. This track was one of my favorites. In line with Yes, another group you should check out is Roxy Music. They are a legendary group way ahead of their time that came up with a glam/new wave genre before it became a genre. You have to listen to them to understand. 👍👍

"STARSHIP TROOPER " is a great song by them from 1971. Then I highly suggest "SIBERIAN KHATRU" from their classic prog album Close To The Edge. They used to open their live shows with it in the 70s. They usually closed the show with "STARSHIP TROOPER".

My take is that the song “changes” time signature from 4/4 to 7/8 for the intro and outro. 4/4 is the same as 8/8 and so what sounds unusual to the ear is the 7/8 measures where they drop the last eighth note, which gives it that kind of “missing a beat” sound. Asia you were humming it perfectly!!😊

the guy in white is the lead singer -- while the guy playing the guitar and started the song is the one that penned the song ... he is also the new guy since the original lead guitarist left to play for the power group ASIA ... this album for YES was indeed a change ... a tempo of 125 BPM (beats per measure) ... It can also be used half-time at 63 BPM or double-time at 250 BPM ... (source: google) ...

The time signature for the intro of this song is...well, my music theory is very rusty these days:) Let's just say it's complex and hopefully a scholar will be along any minute to tell us🤣The guy who was just singing in the back was original longtime vocalist Jon Anderson. This is eighties Yes which brought in newcomer and guitarist/vocalist/songwriter Trevor Rabin. The studio version of this is incredible as is the entire album even though it sounds eighties. I'm sure that was hard for those die hard Yes fans of the very early seventies. Another good one from this album, that was a hit is "It Can Happen" as well as their smash hit "Owner Of A Lonely Heart". I'd be very surprised if you haven't done it already.

@@MT-wo6be Yes, but think of the "fast" parts as actually three beats spread over four notes. In the "slow" section, all four beats are eighth notes, but in the "fast" section, only one and four are eighth notes, while 2 and 3 are sixteenth notes. This gives us 10 eighth notes if you go fast-fast-slow, and 7 eighth notes if you go fast-slow. It starts on the slow, so it starts with 7/8 then 10/8, then repeats.

This is an odd period for the band. Initially they were called Cinema & the shredding guitarist Trevor Rabin was lead. At that time they had one current member of Yes in the band and one former. Then they finally realized that they needed the vocals and writing of Jon Anderson. He is the blonde in the back that you are referring to and you are correct he has been the lead singer for Yes since their formation in 1966. Incredible voice.. At that point they had 2 of the 3 remaining founding members in Yes (Squire=base and Anderson=vocals) and that gave them the legal right to be "Yes" so they changed the name from "Cinema" to "Yes". So Yes was reborn. However, Jon and Chris quickly realized they needed the fantastic guitar of original Yes guitarist Steve Howe and they also invited the current drummer. They embarked on a highly successful tour called "Union". The band maintained this membership until the the deaths of some members.

Funny how many people on here are commenting on the time signatures. Remember most of the great British bands of the late 60's, 70's wrote the best songs ever and most never took music lessons, or theory, or even knew how to put musical notes down in paper. You either have the talent or you don't, it's not taught. Many of the Brits of that Era were heavily influenced by American blues and jazz...

The intro piece is a phrase that is composed of two similar parts of 7/8 and 10/8 (the second part repeats the last 3 notes of the first part 7+3=10.) If I were to learn a song like this on drums, I would find the "1" and use subdivisions of the phrase to track the count (4/4 + 3/4 + 4/4 + 3/4 + 3/4) and determine the accented notes from there. In my head it would sound something like "one-two-three-four-one-two three-one-two-three-four-one-two-three-one-two-three"....a total of 17 played notes at around 125 bpm. When it comes to Yes....the answer is always "Yes".

the odd time section of the song is in 17/8 time signature. The tempo/bpm (or beats per minute) never changes, they're not speeding up or slowing down, they're just going back and forth between the odd time section of 17/8 and 4/4 (4/4 time signature is what most mainstream western music is performed in).

Progressive rock does that "can't find the beat" thing. It's the different time signatures. For those of us who like prog rock, that's what makes the music interesting. And for those who don't like it, they don't understand it & probably never will.

I'd say the easiest way to count the intro without going into fancy music speak is like this: 1234567 1 2 3 4 5. Seven fast ones followed by 5 slower ones at half the speed, unless you wanna go 1234567 12345678910. Odd time signatures are awesome fun!

Some of the old classic rock bands some songs were fronted by different people. The normal lead would step to back ground and vice versa. This is one of those cases... Jon Anderson being the main lead for most of the time and Trevor Horn being backup and lead on certain songs....

what a fantastic song, saw them on the this tour in Cincinnati . Was amazing , no opening acts , they played for like 3 hours . Stage was in center of arena floor and rotated slowly . This band is a really cool one! You know how there are certain levels of achievement in music, some hit the medium range and do really well, other fail 100%, some survive at the bottom, and then we have bands like YES, Iron Maiden, Metallica, the list goes on and on across all genres, top level music creation.

the time signature might be odd in the beginning either like 7/8 or 11/8 & eventually 4/4 or maybe the entire time with the intro in double time & the drummer playing syncopated notes. good ears Asia. a very hard song to play for a drummer.

Good song choice. The intro is in an odd-time signature, 17/8 in this case, then it stabilizes to 4/4. Odd time can create some very interesting tension, but can be difficult to dance to!

This song is definitely a Masterpiece, from their 1983 Album "90125". In My opinion their best Record. Jon Anderson with his magical voice as always. Thank you guys for reacting this. I'm not sure who decided that Jon Anderson should do the show while wearing a hospital gown but they should have made some "changes" at the position of fashion coordinator.

Yeah, you’ve noticed one of the big “changes” that happened when this great, great band hit the 80’s. I can’t remember why lead guitarist Steve Howe left - direction differences or drug addiction are usually the reasons back then - but Trevor Rabin took over, and this is one of his songs, I believe. Tony Kaye played keys in this era… A lot of fans of the late 60’s and 70’s Yes really didn’t like the 80’s version - where Yes seemed to be conforming to the new wave, poppier sound - but even when they did, their musicianship still made them standout.

YES are kings of odd time signatures dont try to figure it out unless you plan to duplicate it.Trevor Rabin was the lyrical creator of this song so there may actually be a meaning but as far a Jons lyrical compositions he said himself that he just adds words that sound good to sing Like most music you should put your own meaning to it and dont try to assume you know what the singer is thinking.

Great reaction I recommend you all this video from the band that inspired Metallica to form in 1981 this band formed in 1976 and Metallica has covered many of their songs. Diamond Head - The Coffin Train animated version not the studio check the lyrics gave me goosebumps they get along with the video and the world today you will enjoy it.

What an interesting choice. A favorite of mine. The guy in the back is Jon Anderson, the original singer for the band. He was joined by Trevor Rabin, who replaced Steve Howe on guitar and eventually replaced Anderson on vocals. This album had their second drummer, Alan White, who replaced Bill Bruford. Anderson left the band after this album. The beat is an alternation of 7/8 and 10/8. It "changes."

To wrap your head around the beat, try counting 1234, 123 / 1234, 123, 123 (don't count the number of notes they're playing, just count.).

Anderson rejoined the band for this album, stuck around for the next one, then left for the second time only to return a few years later. I lost track after that, but he was with them for a good while again; not with them now.

During this Era, Yes had two lead singers, Rabin the guitarist and Anderson ( in White). The albums 90125 and Big Generator were great Albums. Jon Anderson was lead singer for Yes from the 60's to the 2015, I think.

Asia, if you're raised on 4/4, a lot of 'irregular' beats will feel like step step, half-step, kind of like when you two-step when you dance. Where the stutter is, and how often it repeats, will depend on the beat. But whether the stutter comes first, in the middle, or if it's a two count thrown in at the end, that stutter-step idea might help you grab those beats. A highly trained musician does reactions that are too high tech for most people, but you might find you're able to learn what you want to learn from SopranoNotes look at the beat breakdowns or some Rush songs.
