That was a bit painful to watch. I don't see the point of complaining especially when you did not do your homework before going to a foreign country. for the most part Tokyo is very english friendly. Train stations are in both english and Japanese, so are the announcements. Know the weather / rainy seasons, best time to come to is fall or spring. Avoid summer as it is brutally humid. Food is cheap, lots of great local spots. As for the not eating in public.yes that is very rude to do, hence if you notice it is super clean. Your food smell may bother someone ( please don't ever eat on the subway) Pick up a rail pass before you come, you can travel on the Shinkansen and have access some jr stations. I have been lucky to visit to visit Japan many times, as I type this I am in Tokyo and loving it :)

+Kimiaki Ooyama Could you go to a capsule hotel? Are those somewhat cheap? (saying this with no experience) I personally would just always do that, because it is quite cheap, and really, all I want for a hotel is a place to put bags and go to sleep.... Are capsule hotels cheap? I've never been to Japan, but am learning the language and have a cheap planned for later in the year :)

Such a friendly man at 11:20! One of the reasons I'd love to visit Japan is because of their kindness and friendliness towards people. I'd feel very safe in the fact that the Japanese are very helpful, expecting no reward in return. ^^ The guy who gave you free umbrellas made me smile :)

Yudi Prabudi If you haven't visited Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku yet, please go there and you can see all of Tokyo from the popular 202 meter high observation decks, located on the 45th floor of the main building No.1. You don't have to pay for it as it's free of charge (9.30am - 10.30pm).

Although i hope that doesn't happen, Its pathetic how people think America is better off after the 1950s and kids should treat parents and elders like garbage cause its cute or some sh@&, The propaganda machine in America has taught everyone they are worthless don't trust anyone and worship celebrities

I rarely comment on any video. But I'm going to comment on this because I HATE it so much. When you are travelling around the world and filming at least pretend to respect some of there etiquette and culture. Rather than make a face and go 'there's so many weird rules here' try to understand why maybe? You two shouldn't be embarrassing yourself on youtube really.

Normally I woudln´t be that harsh, but this is just very poor. Even excusing the whole " look bored & talk in short sentences while you stare at the camera with a petrified expression trying to be cool" thing, there is no way to justify such a way of blowing money doing virtually nothing interesting at all. Of the whole Kyoto stay the only thing I really got clear is that you guys got wet. Ah yes, you also showed two images of the place you were actually visiting. I ´ve never saw anyone with a minimum of adventurous spirit eating in McDonalds while you arrived to a culinary wonderland, or worrying about hotels that much for that matter.
@redfish337

Mario Borja Pérez López If they actually ordered what they showed a video of, I can't fault them. The cheese teritama is only available for about 1-2 months a year and very good. If I'm in Japan in April then I'll get it once or twice. Otherwise, I don't eat MEALS there, but it's still a good plus 100-300 yen- when whatever good food you had didn't quite fill you up (or you had an early dinner), but you aren't quite hungry enough to put down 400-500 yen for a matsuya/yoshinoya bowl to make up the difference. Good for small treats too, like a milkshake (had a seasonal sakura flavored one this year), or mcflurries. Just because McD is super low class in America doesn't mean it doesn't have a few interesting things (and higher quality food and service), if you go somewhere else. Again, I wouldn't EAT there, but it's practical food for certain situations.
@bravoedokko

Like most of the comments mention, these two travellers make one of the most boring and worst travel-shows. Four-day-trip for two major cities in Japan as their first visit is ridiculous to begin with, where the culture is so unique and deep. Many people will spend four days just in one island! And if one travels abroad with no planning, at least be prepared to enjoy every unpredicted incident like rain. Smile! Yes, a physical smile will change your mentality and attitude. If they thought the silence of lone walkers on the street was "weird" (personally, if I witness all those lone walkers talking to themselves, I would feel more "weird" and worrying), may I say that the woman was so very WEIRD not to respond whatsoever, apart from a couple of blank glances, to that kind man's offer of umbrellas. If they are still travelling abroad, DO TRY to enjoy all experiences that you'd never encounter in your home neighbourhood, unless you get dragged in a crime scene or something, of course.

We totally agree and we did. Sometimes we would forget to say it or we would say it in English first since it is so automatic to us. You can hear Josh and Emily both saying thank you in Japanese (arigatō) to the man who gave them umbrellas at 11:38. You can also hear Josh saying it at 20:40.

I think this video should be retitled "How To Be A Clueless Tourist In Japan." Lessons could include "How to not buy an umbrella when it's raining" or "How to feel that everything different from your culture/country is normal and everything else is 'weird'" or "How to not make eye-contact when saying 'thanks'" or even "How to wait until the last moment to find accommodations and then be shocked by the price."

So the biggest flaw with this concept is that you've made a travel show about two tourists who seem shocked that they might find it difficult to travel around a country that has a very different culture and where they have no possible way to understand the language without any planning. Such an ignorant bunch of people. Firstly, it's a total myth that Japan is expensive. The transport system there is incredible, my only criticism is that it's very easy to get lost finding the right platforms or taking the correct exit in the Tokyo Subway as it's poorly signposted. Also, the subway is run by 2 groups, Tokyo Metro and Toei, so it can be daunting the first time you use it. The ticket machines though have an English option, which the hosts incorrectly said they didn't, and an unlimited day pass is 1,000 Yen. If you're visiting Japan and intend to travel between cities it's worth getting a Japan Rail Pass, which you organise before leaving your country and is only available to foreigners and gives you unlimited travel on any JR run vehicle, which includes the Shinkansen bullet trains, local trains, buses and the Tokyo Monorail. Obviously the hosts didn't have this and had to spend a lot on the trains because they didn't plan anything. As for accommodation, if you are expecting to travel to a country during one of it's peak seasons (cherry blossom season culminating in Golden Week) don't complain that you can't find a cheap hotel, of which there are many, because you didn't book in advance. I bet that $300 hotel was beautiful though. The food in Japan is reason enough to travel there, some of the best restaurants are in the train stations and while you can spend a lot on a meal (I spent 15,000 Yen/about £100 on a single course once) the majority is really cheap, try Okonomiyaki as a great example of really cheap and extremely satisfying Japanese cuisine. There's nothing wrong with going to McDonalds, I went when I was there because even that was different from what I was used to and looked delicious (I was also a little inebriated), but with the nation's cuisine at your disposal it didn't really warrant inclusion in a travel show. I doubt your host realised how disrespectful he was being with the sushi either. English is everywhere in Japan, most signs relating to travel will have the Kanji and the Romanic form of the word and it's spoken reasonably well in the cities. In fact when I travelled through the countryside all of the young school kids were desperate to practice their English. The people are very quick to try their best to help and will really appreciate foreigners attempting to speak a little Japanese, simply a sumimasen (excuse me) here or an ohaiyu gozaimasu (good morning) there will go a long way. Considering you're the one visiting their country, the arrogant complaint that nothing is in English is stupid and incorrect. The observation that no one talks is rubbish, people are always talking however courtesy is deeply ingrained in their culture so they often make sure that they're not bothering other people by keeping their voices down. Tokyo is the largest metropolitan area in the world but apart from nightspots like Shibuya, Akihabara, Ginza Roppongi and Shinjuku it's very quiet, has very little traffic and is very peaceful. The only people who were ever being too loud and rude during my visit happened to be tourists. Same goes for the consumption of food, as long as you're not making a mess and keeping as private as you can be you'll be fine. The cameraman did a great job though and the editing was brilliant. Shame about the concept.

I honestly don't know why you guys didn't plan things in advance, like hotel rooms, umbrellas etc.. As for you characterization of Japan having "weird" rules, I don't know why you would expect things to be the same as where ever it is you come from (I assume somewhere in the US), it is a different country after all. Maybe a little more research into the customs in Japan should have been done, including a little bit of the language - even just a phrasebook would have been helpful, and I don't know why you didn't have one. Finally, you looked as if you hated being in Japan, based on the amount of complaining. I am sorry to say so, but that is my reaction to this video.

Most current existing travel shows and amateur travel vlogs show hosts enjoying themselves during their trip and entice viewers to embark on their own adventure to experience and appreciate different cultures. Apparently FIRST TIME HERE's slogan "A DIFFERENT KIND OF TRAVEL SHOW" means they wanted to instead show ill-prepared people fumble around reinforcing negative Western stereotypes. Everything is described simply as "weird". How charming... If you don't have 27 minutes to endure the entire video allow me to summarize: "Two people arrive in Japan with no travel plans and proceed to complain about Japanese people, places, and things. Everything is super weird. Nothing is exciting. Next Episode: South Africa... we hope it didn't suck as much as Japan did." Finally, there are at least two other shows that show Westerners embarrassing themselves abroad so there really isn't a need for another one like FIRST TIME HERE. SEE: An Idiot Abroad (Ricky Gervais forces an ignoramus to travel the world and film him complaining), Departures (Two Canadians travel the world and one of them complains a lot).

I just booked my tickets to Japan!! I'm super excited!! Thanks for sharing; video was AMAZING quality. I noticed a lot of commenters here were pretty rude. As for me, I'm glad you showed some of the struggles your travel group went through. It really helps prepare me for the trip and know what to expect. I will def bring an umbrella

I'm planning a trip to Japan next October and all I can say is that these travelers should have done a little bit more research about Japan, its culture, manners and etiquette, and pretty much better planning (weather, hotel, transportation, etc.). It's definitely a good quality production, but a positive more happier vibe would have been nice to see.

btw for anyone going on a budget trip remember you can buy food at 100 yen shops its pretty much a dollar store and you can also buy cheap food at 7/11 they have western foods in those. Have a safe trip everyone!

Nice. I kinda enjoy it. very real. I missed comfort food when I travel so I think it is ok to film going into McDonald's -- not the most exciting choice in Japan but understandable. But I do agree that the 'weird' comments and 'errie' 'quiet' bits are a bit insensitive. Japanese are very particular about social etiquette so they r super polite and quiet.

ah 'the umbrella experience' in Japan is pretty famous! Its nice that you could show this to interested people, becoz in Japan people often give you an umbrella to help you when your're in need. I love that deep respect and compassion in that country.

@HumanoidSparky
@HumanoidSparky 9 лет назад
Jason Kolojeski Spontaneity can definitely lead to adventure, but poor planning easily leads to misery I think that, when traveling to a country where you don't speak the language a lot of pre-plannig is necessary. I recently traveled to Japan for my first overseas trip and I planned like a mad-man. I looked up the weather well in advance, I heavily researched all the districts and train information of the cities that I was staying in, and I had a notebook covered in travel-tips permanently in my hand bag, and all of my planning lead to one hell of an awesome holiday. I still had my little spontaneous adventures (i.e. making friends with a few locals and following them to a marvelous hotspring), and all of my planning meant that I didn't have to sweat the small stuff. Also, I can't believe these guys didn't even book a hotel room for Tokyo! They could've saved so much money by booking in advance! Talk about blowing a budget!
@spindext
@spindext 9 лет назад
HumanoidSparky I totally agree with you. I did the same and just came back from an awesome trip in Tokyo and Osaka. Without good research, you can waste so much time in a new place trying to figure out what to do. Makes traveling hassle-less I definitely had some nice leisurely days in my schedule to allow for exploration and spontaneity. I want to go back to Japan and stay there for several years T-T
@HumanoidSparky

spindext Me too! Japan is addictive! i'm trying to find way to live there for a few years, but without a degree a working visa is a no-go. I'm thinking of joining a language school next year so that I can get a student visa. I really want to go to Osaka (i've only been to Tokyo and Kyoto), which area do you think is the best to stay in as far as night-life goes? I was thinking Minami?
@spindext
@spindext 9 лет назад
HumanoidSparky I only stayed there for 2 nights, so I haven't really explored Osaka that much. Each night, we spent our time in the Dotonburi area, because that's where a lot of clubs and bars (Giraffe is a 3 floor club right by the river. Costs 1500 jpy before 9pm. 3000 jpy after... but closes at 1am) are at. Osaka is pretty good for partying, eating, and shopping. In my opinion, there aren't too many sights to see, but that's just my limited take on it. I'm sure there are others who really love Osaka and know all the awesome local spots. Also, did you check if your citizenship matches with Japan's working holiday countries? Some countries' citizens can be on a working holiday status and stay up to a year in Japan. Or so I've heard...

This video was lovely. Japan is a place I want to go to so bad, and it is nice to see how other foreigners just walk into a country that is unfamiliar and still have a great time. I love hoe Josh kept saying "I'm not complaining, because we're in Japan!!", and how Emily was always smiling and laughing, even if she was miserable. I would love if this turned into a show!! I'd watch every episode.

I'm not one to normally post youtube comments, but this was an exceptionally bad travel guide. Why go to Japan if you're going to complain the entire time? Spoiler alert for somebody that's never experienced the season of Spring before: IT RAINS... A LOT. You didn't even attempt to use the language aside from a badly pronounced "Arigatō." Also it appears that you didn't have anything planned in advance. You do realize that Tokyo is one of the most populated cities in the world right? I'm sorry but this was a poorly planned documentary and trip it seems... Not to mention there was hardly any background on the places you visited in terms of culture, geography, or historical context... Go elsewhere if you'd like to learn the first thing about Japan.
