Welcome to Tamilnadu. The state itself is larger than Srilanka. The birds you saw were Black kites mostly are scavenging in nature . Tamilnadu is great for new comers but be careful with tourist guides or touts in tourist areas like Mahabalipuram, Madurai etc . You will enjoy your time.I belong to the same state and I am about 550km away in South west(and state is 700km long)Have a great time!

I lived in Sri Lanka for a few years in the early 1980's, but spent many years in India in the 1970's and I can honestly say that Madras (Chennai) is one of the best cities. You ate hoppers in Lanka but you will love the dosas here !

Hi guys Nice to see you having a great time in Chennai ….. I am ardent traveller too and love touring India. I have been travelling and completed 80 % of India for the past 30 years and yet could not finish seeing it. I am Malaysian. Visiting India is equivalent of seeing the whole world because of it’s diverse cultures, languages ,cuisine and the most mind blowing is it’s architecture in temples and palaces. Try to visit the ancient temples and observe the architecture in it which maybe more 1500 years old . The flowers you saw was called garland and it meant for the deities in the temple. Word of warning : Be careful of touts and conman . Generally Indians are very nice especially the Tamils and the southern Indian people but you should be able to differentiate cheaters and genuine people . Enjoy India and enjoy it’s cuisine .

Hi, those garlands you saw are always there. It is used in most occasions in South India. These will be used in marriages where the bride and groom will exchange similar to how rings are exchanged in a church wedding. Garlands will be bought from here for the last rights of people who just died. Visitors will bring these and place over the dead body. These will also be used to receive and welcome people by wearing it on their neck. In the temples these garlands are worn over the idols (deities) during worship. In summary, this is used as a mark of respect in both good and sad events. Hope this helps and I am from Chennai. Welcome to India and enjoy your time. South India is the best and literate part of India. Don't forget to visit hill stations in Tamil Nadu, Kerala and Karnataka. You mentioned Express Avenue Mall but Phoenix Mall is larger than that. Try visiting East Coast Road and beaches in that stretch. Also don't miss Pondicherry.
