First Time in Norway

We're visiting Norway for the first time! We wake up in our glass igloo in Inari, located way up in the northern part of Finland known as Lapland. Being so close to Norway, we can't resist jumping in the car to spend the day on the Norwegian coast. We're delighted and surprised to find that, within a very short distance of the Finnish/Norwegian border, the landscape changes drastically. The forests of Finland give way to the rocky mountains of Norway and some of the most beautiful winding roads we've ever seen. We drive to the village of Bugøynes, which is about as picturesque as it gets and perfectly matches our idea of Norway: colourful houses surrounded by wild blue water. We stop for a picnic to enjoy the view before driving back to Finland. We arrive in time to join a tour at our hotel where you go hunting for the northern lights. Despite cloudy conditions, we see the lights (and the Milky Way) and enjoy a roaring fire and hot chocolate in a traditional Finnish wood cabin called a kota. What a full and incredible day of adventure split between two beautiful countries.

That thing at 2:05 is a type of mailbox known (roughly) as a toss-box. If you live in a rural area, you get your newspaper delivered into one of those instead of your doorstep or personal mailbox. It's done to keep delivery costs down. By the way, if you're ever back in Bugøynes (and not on a budget), the bistro there serves an excellent king crab. Bugøynes is actually the center for commercial red king crab fishing in Norway... It's also known as "Little Finland" since many people there are descendants of Finns who settled there in the 19th century. Many of them still speak Finnish.

We live in rural Australia. We have a similar system here. Where a side road leaves the main road there will often be a number of roadside mail boxes found at the junction. This is because properties might be kilometres or tens of kilometres apart, so this saves the mailman a lot of time driving down each side road. Also, large properties will often have a roadside mail box at the front gate. This because there can be a significant drive from the front gate to the homestead. For some sheep or cattle stations (ranch if you're American) the drive from front gate to homestead might be measured in hours. Mail addressed to these places is usually addressed to the person's name, then the letters RMB (for roadside mail box) then the specific number of the RMB.

Thank you for clarifying its purpose! Also good to know about the bistro. We heard a lot about the king crab in that area and how popular it is :)

That yellow box at 2:05 is a shared mailbox. It’s usually used for delivering weekend newspapers in sparsely populated areas. Locals come to the box and pick up the paper with their name on it. You could argue that it indeed is a kind of a library 🙂

The yellow "boxes" by the road you see so often, that is where dairy farmers used to place their full milk containers, and then the trucks would pick 'em up and replace the same numbers of can with empty ones :)
@Muchoyo
@Muchoyo 3 года назад
I don't know about Finland, but I doubt those are melkeramper ("milk stands"?), they're way too small for even a single commercial melkespann/milk container, which holds maybe 20 or 30 liters. Anyway, they would be obsolete nowadays, when milk is picked up by tanker trucks. Milk stands used to be meeting/gathering places for kids in rural areas in Norway by the way. Especially on evenings in summer. They were big enough for a bunch to sit on at the same time, joking, flirting and telling tall tales. Some, or most, would conveniently even have roofs.

About the fox road thing! Same thing happened to us. We were driving from Finland to norway last year with a camper van and suddenly my mom sees 2 little baby foxes on the side of the road being super cute! They were having little play fights, playing in the bushes and leafs, it was adorable. We also had the same expirience with reindeers in Lappi. Theres reindeers everywhere on roads just chilling, this video reminded about those good moments in norway and im happy to say were going back in a few weeks!

Little boxes with roofs stuck to trees are nearly always intended as animal nesting sites. They are usually very species specific, and I imagine that the one you saw there might be a grouse hut where the hen can hop up and lay her eggs off the ground. Just best guess. It doesn't fit with the whole camouflage shtick they have going, but the height and size might fit. It could also be for owls. Someone from Finland might know. These things vary enormously across Scandinavia. But we really like our birds and will build homes for them all over the place.

Cool, just an advice: Listen to the weather station and to local people before thinking about going any hiking at this time of the year,special in the mountains. Also , take care out on the road. It can be slippery and changes all the time, so if you are not used to winter contition and road driving, take it easy:) Roads here in north can be smalls and there is alot of heavy traffic.

It was really fun to see how you froze when you got out of the car! LOL !! The next time you go on a long drive, take off your outerwear, and use the heat in the car to a point you think is comfortable! Because when you get out of the car, you put on your outerwear again! Then the temperature will not seem as cold as you probably felt! Have many great trips, and say, you should definitely travel to Norway again, but further south, and preferably in August! To the west coast and the fjords there!

The temperature doesn't matter. As long as its dark and clear sky you can see the northern lights. But when its -10C or colder its often clear sky and then of course you have a better chance :) Grew up at 70' north and have seen the northern lights in all kind of temperatures which are possible to get when its dark (late August to early April). I hadn't seen this video until just now. I've heard that Norway is among the most expensive countries to visit for travelers/tourists. I have a very similar sort of thing like Marc in wanting fuel pump numbers to be in whole & even numbers vs,..not. That's kind of wild that there was no official border presence on that road from what was shown, in crossing from Finland into Norway. Good idea to do your 'picnic' in the back end of your vehicle, being it is Norway & was within the first part of January on top of it, when this was posted, so very understandable to be chilled there. It's a bit surprising for how far up in latitude Norway is & in early January yet no snow to be seen around where you were in Norway.

Cool video, I just happen to live abit further north along the coast from there :-). Not sure if I understood correctly, but you sat inside the car operating the drone ? that would be illegal in Norway as the rule are you are to have visual view to the drone at all time while flying it :-) however ... doubtful any police would have caught you there anyway but an advice just :-) there are suppose to come stricter or maybe have come some stricter drone rules where you have to have a sort of certificate to operate one .. not sure what or how that would mean for foreign people visiting ofcourse. Also when travling up in the north, always be aware that weather change fast :-) especially in the winter, and roads can be closed :-)

I have a job offer in Norway to work as an Engineer but I'm unsure if I want to take it because the culture there is very reserved, it's difficult to make friends with native Norwegians and it can get very quiet or lonely during the winters and evenings due to the lack of social life there! The "Norwegians are reserved" myth needs to die. Norwegians are very easy going and quite open to new people from other countries. You'll make friends in no time. Now that's traveling!! Love this installment!! Norway is stunning! So why is it so expensive? Can you give us an equivalent cost for something from the US or Canada?
@betsyfreeman6637
@betsyfreeman6637 4 года назад
Found this explanation: “Norwegians get a lot for their money. Norway is so expensive because it has productive workers who can be used for work that produces many valuable products in a short time. Hourly rates of pay in Norway are high. Because most products and services entail the application of manpower, labour costs are high in Norway. This in turn makes products and services sold in Norway expensive. A beer is expensive because the barman has to be paid to compensate him for not going to the North Sea to work on oil exploration. Espresso is expensive because the waiter has to be enticed into making coffee instead of working in Norsk Hydro. Norwegian products are primarily expensive for foreigners. For Norwegians, they are cheap in terms of working hours, and compared to what foreigners have to pay in working hours for similar products in their native country. The Italians and French have to pay more to buy a litre of petrol and loaf of bread than we do in terms of working hours. High prices therefore equate to time being cheap. High prices go hand in hand with a high standard of living,” explains Erling Røed Larsen.

Love your videos! I used to watch your "competitors" Kara & Nate, but honestly got a bit tired of their upstrung "American" way of being. You guys seem to be more relaxed and present where you are (are you from Canada perhaps?), actually enjoying the landscape/people, not only thinking about how it looks to us viewers. And not only staying in those amazing, but expensive accommodations not really available to mere mortals. Keep it up! 👍🏽

Eileen Aldis Very beautiful! I used to be priest in the church there. Older people (and some young) talked finnish in their daily life and only spoke norwegian when outsiders (like me) were present. I have many wonderful memories from services, baptisms and weddings there. I also had one funeral in that churchyard. The place was almost abandoned as a result of decline in the fishing-industry and the locals advertized themselves for sale in national newspapers in 1989. Today it's the most important landing for king-crabs in Norway.

Spending in a country is about values and attitude. Do you think its ok to come and pollute, leaving garbage, do impact on the animals, fishing, swim in clean water, take photo of the scenery, but NOT leaving behind a dime? And even recommand others to do it aswell. Thats to me is taking something for free. I dont mind our fellow neighbors getting it, but still think fair play is important.

It's too expensive here . I think most understand and expect tourists to bring what they can to keep the costs down. We travel to Sweden a lot of us ,to buy more affordable groceries. Some tourists leave a lot of money ,some not at all. I think we just hope tourists had a nice visit . There are all kinds of people here ,like everywhere, but most of people wouldn't think of that . But what we don't like ,is when people throw garbage out of their cars . Most doesn't, tho. This video was well made with the drone ,so cool. Sweet people .
