We had such a great time in Novi Sad! We always love checking out cities other than the capital of a country. Novi Sad seemed quite a lot different than Belgrade. In next week's video we'll be checking out Subotica. We are also planning on coming back to Serbia and other Balkan countries in the summer. We'll probably visit mostly the south, but let us know in the comments where we need to visit and what we need to eat! 😊 Thanks for watching! Hvala! 🙂 - Brandon & Anja
Stara planina. Zlatibor. Niš. Banja Luka. Try Banja lučki ćevap and pita ispod sača. Teletina ispod sača Sallad with grilled paprika. Srpska salata. Punjena pljeskavica. Pečenje and Leskovački roštilj. Vješalica
čvarci - pork scratchings in England or cracklings in other english speaking countries. we cook them very hard to get as much pig fat and lard so it have specific taste. you could buy just cvarci in that same shop to taste it. It is 50-50 between ppl who likes them and dislikes them. But that scones are loved by most of ppl, of course with youguhurt.
Yes, it's pretty at night indeed. Unfortunately, our equipment is not very good for dark/evening shots at all (we film a large portion of our videos on a phone), so we can't really film when it's darker. This actually made filming in the winter a bit of a struggle 😅. Thanks for watching! 🙂
@@wherearewe-yt there is cool place for punk gigs called "Dvorište" next to the Theatre, and cool pub in the same street with tons of different beer and with cool décor, including jail cell (Mazut)
@@colinafobe2152 We didn't get to go to any bars this time around - though we did have a bar called "Gulag" marked, which we didn't end up going to. We'll have to check those out if we ever make it back.

Poštujemo sve vere i nacije. 2 godine unazad doselio se veliki broj Rusa i Ukrajinaca koji normalno žive i rade. Hvala na odlicnom videu. Znam engleski, ali lakse mi je napisati na mom jeziku. Ps. Dodjite na Exit festival u Julu. Najveci i najbolji međunarodni festival tog tipa u Evropi. 🙂☕️🥂❤️❤️❤️
We had a great time there! Though it's likely that the next time we're in Serbia, we will travel more to the south. We still have Subotica left though. 🙂
Novi Sad is the most beautiful little city. Great food and people and it is the safe city to walk anywhere at anytime. Nightlife is great even on weekdays. People love to sit outside in the cafe's and people watch. You picked "Plava frajla"it is one of the great restaurants and they have "cureci mlinci " something like (turkey lasagna)It is one of the best dishes ❤. Greeting from Atlanta,ga.🥰
Haha, you must be psychic 😂. If you're subscribed you can turn "notifications" on and then you won't miss the next video. Our next one should come out in a week 😊.
Plava frajla means the Blue Fräulein. Frajla is Vojvodina (Serbian) localism borrowed from German Fräulein, as Novi Sad was until 1918 part of Austria Hungary. there are many German loan words which are "corrupted" such is fruštuk, šrafciger, kibic-fenster, dunst, šnicla, treger, flaša, veš, ajzliban, šoferšajbna, brushalter, luft , štangla, cigla, malter, kurcšlus, rajsnedla, knedla, rajsferšlus, šminka, bluza, knap, vikler, šnala, fen, štikla, majstor, kifla, špajz, štrudla, kelner, šporet, šlag, šne, šnita, šank, torta, šalter, farba, špenadla, pasuje, šnir, kugla, kegla, štima... (š is sch, c is German z). can you understand these words?
Oh wow, actually I (Anja) think I can understand some of them. The first one means breakfast I assume 😊. I also noticed that Senf in Serbian is the same as in German. I noticed a few others while we were there, which surprised me to be honest.
@@wherearewe-yt I am sure she will understand. Serbian spec up north has plenty of germanism, while on south there are plenty of turkisms, plus we use many other loan words from french, english, greek, latin, hungarian, italina, even arabic and persian

@@kornelobajdin5889 Hahaha. The translation is definitely not accurate, but we understood what it meant. For some reason it's translating cvarci to gizzards..😅
If you ad ajvar and kajmak to anything it instantly becomes delicious. You people are legit! You understand our food. :D I mean, you figured why McDonalds is extremely irrelevant here - you can find pljeskavica at every corner. Many foreigners completely miss the point and go straight to Mc. Huuuuge mistake. For good rakija - this needs to be homemade. Those that are sold in bars and restaurants are rarely quality ones. You need to know people... Thank you for great video and keep up the good work. Wellcome! :)
It's true. Ajvar and Kaymak are so good and we like putting it on absolute everything. We actually bought some from the grocery store in Serbia and brought it home but we already ate it all 😂. The rakija at the restaurant in the video was actually supposed to be homemade. At least that's what the menu said. It was the best one we had, but maybe it was better because we actually drank it slowly like you're supposed to since a lot of people told us we did it wrong in our other video 😅 Thanks so much for watching 😊
@@wherearewe-ytAs I already said - you understand significance of kajmak and ajvar. Ajvar is also mosty homemade. Preparation of it is a small ritual, and recipes can vary a lot. But it is a lengthy and labor costly work. And we all love it - by grandma's recipe :D When you open jar of ajvar - it's just - puf! Gone. With a big spoon. 5mins of work. xD And for preparation you easily spend 4-5 days. And 100,150.200 kgs of red paprika...madness! Rakija on the other hand - that is grandpa's job (or pleasure, more precisely) and secret recipe. Plum is compulsory here. Every restaurant will write it's homemade...but that is a lie. The best ones are kept for years, and brought out in special occasions. When you drink a lot of bad rakija you will have terrible headache. If it's homemade - tommorow you won't feel a thing after komplet lepinja or pljeskavica ;)
@@wherearewe-ytjust a comment about rakija. Home made rakija is not the best. Sometimes it is really excellent, sometimes not. The quality of the product sold in bars and shops is nothing but excellent. The last 25 years a lot of craft distillers have emerged and they have a very professional work ethic and modern technology. Last year's winner at the Wine and spirit competition in London, world's most renowned competition, the Baraba lozovača (eau-de-vie) won with 99 points. Enter a larger supermarket or a proper spirit shop and you will have an abundance of rakijas to choose from, from around 10 EUR to several hundreds EUR if it is a šljivovica that has matured in wooden casks for 15 years or more.
That's what we thought! I (Brandon) am usually good at identifying flavors (as a former chef) but it really didn't taste strongly of pork! It makes sense though, given that they sold other pork products.
If you like ćevapi, enjoy them when you go to the south of Serbia (Niš, Pirot, Leskovac). But probably the best ćevapi in Serbia are in Novi Pazar. In addition to excellent ćevapi, this city has other unique and excellent specialties (mantije) that you must try.
@@wherearewe-ytSmart decision. You ate delicious food in Belgrade and Novi Sad, in the south they will have the same and other specialties at a much higher level quality and taste. You will see all that yourself👋
Pogaca you eat was made with pork cracklings.Cvarci they are kind of pork cracklings, with fa thermally extracted from the fat..Cvarci are mostly a rustic countryside. specialty.❤❤❤
We did see some others from the outside and we went into some but it didn't always seem appropriate for filming (because people were praying) and we don't want to be disrespectful. In our Belgrade video we went into an orthodox church.
We saw their video after the fact, and we said the exact same thing to ourselves! 😂 We did the main things that are recommended in Novi Sad, so the attractions are the same for every video of Novi Sad. We had two days there, and planned on having a lot more in the video - but we were unable to finish our food tour video the day prior in Belgrade, so we ended up having to finish it in Novi Sad and missed out on a day. The restaurant was actually a recommendation of a local, and it was only a 1 minute walk from where we were staying, so it was convenient. We typically try to make our videos stand our by getting local recommendations in advance, or by going to unique attractions or bars. Didn't work out so well this time. 😂
There is like 500 000 not 290 000 , and the fortress has a lot of underground tunnels, and it is one of the biggest in the world. And ćevapi is must to try when you are in ex YU
Have you noticed (I've been telling this to people in USA for years) how every single meal, especially main course, is completely savory w/o any added sugar? I mean, there are carbs in that rice ball☝️but it's still savory.😎 Yes, in Serbia eat sweets but only and only as dessert. PS-not the best time of the year to visit, you'll miss some major festivals, but l can see you're enjoying it already. All the best😎💪
@@wherearewe-yt Well, "Exit", "Guča" (goocha), or "Roštiljijada" (roštilj=grill) in the city of Leskovac. But neither one of these is soon, unfortunately. Speaking of Leskovac btw, you definitely should try "Leskovačka mućkalica" dish, just tell them not to make very spicy😎 PS-also, you shouldn't pass by "Karađorđeva" or "Bečka (Vienna's)" schnitzel, or even pork or lamb "Pečenje" (the whole animal baked on the rolling stick on fire then cut in pieces)💪 Bon appetite🍺
btw. Novi Sad is a partner city of Dortmund. Which means: they have now to watch every BVB game! (be happy that your partner city is not Hamburg, hehe)
Dortmund has a square named after Novi Sad, while the Dortmunt Square is at the entrance of Varadin Bridge in Novi Sad. Appropriate since a Dortmund construction company built the old Prince Tomislav Bridge in the 1920s, the same location where Varadin Bridge is (still uses the old bridge's entrance and river pillars).
They had a great menu! The peppers and dessert were really good. I wish we had gotten the correct turkey dish we had tried to order though, because it looked quite interesting.
For many of us Serbians Novi Sad is best ,because is much smaller then Belgrade but at same time got everything you need.😎😎😎. Also I'm suprised that there is no menu in English . I was 2 years ago there in Belgrade ,Novi Sad and few other cities ,in many ,many restorans and they have English version everywhere.
We almost always travel on foot when we explore cities, so it's much easier to film and make videos in smaller places. Novi Sad was the perfect size! I'm sure we missed some things, but given we only filmed this in a day, I think we did alright. 😅
Jeste Novi sad vredan posete. Welcome to Serbia Anna and Brandon. Come again and visit Niš, Kraljevo, Kopaonik, Zlatibor, Subotica... Tschuss/Greeting😊
Do you know how long you two are staying and traveling around Serbia cuz there's more to see in Serbia. there is also Republic, Serbia near Bosnia. it's also part of Serbia it's a city. Great video. keep on the cool videos of Mother Serbia. enjoy your stay and meal in Serbia... Živela SRBIJA!
The whole point of the plazma shake for it to be gooey - cuz its a milkshake…. But with plazma milk and in summer. Vanilla ice cream. 30 dollars to experience a piece of history isn’t much - maybe skin a meal or two and go!
We were only in Novi Sad for two days - the first day of which was us finishing our food tour. So this video was only 24 hours. When making videos, we have to consider the cost of activities- as we're constantly filming new videos in each city. Though I'm sure the tour would be fun, $60 is too much for us - especially given it would be nearly impossible to film with the type of equipment we have, and would likely only end up being a minute or two in the video. Traveling just for us, and traveling to filming are quite different. A lot of people just end up skipping over museums, or tours like that in a video. 😆
@@goransukovic8703 We wanted to try some of the pork cracklings, but we were leaving the next day. Wish we would've tried those as well. They looked great. 🐷
Love your videos.❤ I wish you see Serbian villages, you would love it, especially west Serbia. Zlatibor,Tara, Mokra Gora, Kremna, Kadinjača ect....and all villages around are so beautiful. You should come again during the Summer
We plan to revisit on later summer/ very early Fall, if we can! Likely the south. We've had literally DOZENS of people suggest we go to Niš, so we feel like it's a must at this point! Haha. We'll keep those places in mind if we travel west. We've been told they have the best komplet lepinja, I think??
@@wherearewe-yt no. The only true and the best komplet lepinja is in the city of Užice. That's the heart of west Serbia. Užice is well known for it's fortress dating from Ottoman Empire. Also, Užice republic was first liberated territory in World War II in Europe. Near city Užice is Zlatibor mountain(with urban centre but only if you move from centre is breathtaking nature and beautifull villages, also the longest Gondola in the world, 9km) and Tara mountain (one of the most beautiful mountains), Mokra Gora village with drvengrad and Šargan eight railway. You can also check Drežnička gradina and potpećka pećina(cave), also villages near Užice,Zlatibor and Tara like Gostilje, Zaovine, Kremna, Kadinjača... Just research, you will not regret it. If ever you decide to go there I will recommend you a great guide. I would give you a tour for free, but I live in the Philippines now.😄 Have fun on your travels
What you ate at the beginning of the video clip is a scone, with( Pork rind,or cracklings or scratchings) Not sure exactly what you call it? It is very rare in the West, especially rare in the US, but it is very popular in Serbia.
Pogacica sa cvaarcima. Is also one of my favourites. Cvarci are lets put it this way. You have a pigs fatty bacon. Mostly from the back. Its like 80% fat 20 meat. Its cut up into pieces little cubes. And is cooked in a kazan a 50l big bowl which is heated up naturally with wood under it. You don't add anything to it. It requires constant spinning and as it heats up it releases lard. And thats a leftover of cvarci. Most of the time you can get at least 30 40l of lard out of 50 60kilos of that bacon. They are perfect breakfast food ngl. With some salt its delicious. I guess its like coocked bacon.
@@wherearewe-yt Probably depends mostly you salt it. It goes so well with boiled eggs and fresh tomatoes yoghurt thats what I ate it with sometimes for breakfast. Its an interesting and fulfilling mix of tasty foods. Haven't tried with anything on top of it honestly. Kajmak nor Ajvar. Those two people mostly put on bread like jam or Nutella 😂
The first thing you were eating is POGACICE with pork greaves. That will be good again with yogurt. The name of the pastry shop " butik cvaraka", mining boutique of pork greaves.
It wasn't really dry but we felt like something was missing. We should have thought of the fact that you'd eat it with Yogurt like Burek. Makes sense. 😊
We are indeed tried Plazma cookies in our Serbian snack video that'll come out in a couple week. We still have some left and I dunk them in my tea (with milk) all the time 😊
Our food tour video didn't get finished in Belgrade, so we had to continue it Novi Sad. That meant we didn't get to do all we wanted in Novi Sad, unfortunately! Next time.
Next time you are in northern Serbia, you should try my favourite, poppy seed strudel. It has a lot of filling and goes very well with coffee or a glass of milk.
We had a great time in Novi Sad! Though we wish we had more time. We were pretty rushed, since we didn't manage to finish our food tour video in Belgrade. We had to finish it in Novi Sad, which cut into our time there!
We, all the Yugo ex-pat's are living vicariously through your travels...and we envy you sooooooo!!!!!!!!!!! And one of the largest music festivals in Europe is held up in the Petrovaradin Fortress/Citadel sometimes in July. It's called 'EXIT' and is a week long annual event featuring most popular bands from Europe and beyond.
Yeah, we've heard of EXIT! Not sure if it's necessarily out type of music, but that would be quite the venue! Hahaha. We will likely be exploring a few more former Yugoslav areas later this year (Kosovo, Macedonia). We can already taste the BBQ'd meats!
@@wherearewe-yt must try specialties of northern Serbia are "riblji paprikas" which is a spicy pepper river fish stew and "gulash" which stewed beef in sauce with pasta. Enjoy your stay in my hometown
@@Srbenda126 We didn't try those dishes this time, since we've already had nearly the exact same dishes in Budapest, where we live! In Hungary, the spicy river fish stew is called Halászlé. I'm not sure if there's any difference, but it looks almost the same. We tried it in our Budapest Food video. We really enjoyed Subotica. Absolutely beautiful!
Pogačica fill: simply put, it's a type of fried and ground pork bacon, called "droždina". Usually leftovers of pork cracklings. Thus, "pogačica sa čvarcima" or "pogačica sa droždinom". And it's much better to eat "pogačica" with yogurt. Fun fact about clock tower on Petrovaradin fortress: in the old days when this clock tower was used by Danube sailors, the minutes were not so important, so the small hand was set to show the minutes and the big hand the hours. It remains so today. More fun fact about name of Novi Sad: "Novi" means new, and "Sad" means "garden" (of flowers) in most Slavic languages. Živeli i dobrodošli. :)
I'm very pleased you enjoyed my hometown. The next time you visit, you could try Cafe Veliki for a new take on classic Vojvodinian food and Sokače for amazing traditional Serbian food.
Great video, but few suggestions if i may. Best food is not in city centers, you should go a little bit further to places where locals eat. You should take off your hat when you are at the table inside a restaurant. And please, don't say "oh, shit" when your are eating. :)
I bet the food is much better outside the city center, but unfortunately we didn't have too much time to venture far out. When it comes to the rest of your feedback, especially the hat etiquette, we think that in today's day and age, a construct like this created by society shouldn't really matter anymore (especially since it doesn't affect other people at all. Unlike smoking in restaurants for example 😆). I think it's also important to be careful when making requests like this because you never know the reasons to why some people are wearing certain things. Many people actually wear hats and headscarves for medical reasons. The last thing anyone should want to do is make other people uncomfortable by pointing it out and making them explain themselves. As for the swearing, that's a regular daily occurrence for us which we don't have a problem with. We try to show our true selves in our videos. Thanks for watching!
You should have went to "Knin" or "Trojka" in Novi Sad for some real food :) You are going to love food in Niš if you go there. Try "belmuž" as a starter.
At 3:00 I guess you tried natural made siroup, it has strong taste because we drink it with water - you put siroup in a n 1/8 of normal glass and add water, it has the same taste but it is not so strong 😁 Živeli!
its more like this .. this part of serbia, vojvodina, became serbia in 1918 as a war gift, till then it was hungary and aka part of the austro hungarian empire ,eventho serbs by them selfs were the dominant citizens ,in overall they werent ,so still many of those that are old settlers, prefer not to call this balkan as it actually really isnt, u shall see that /notice for ur self when u visit the south as u say @@wherearewe-yt
