Welcome to Zakopane! Poland's number one ski destination. Situated in the heart of the Tatra mountains, this ski town is so much to offer. This is the first of many videos of our week spent here. Hope you enjoy watching us try polish food for the first time. We loved it and both said we would definitely look for polish restaurants when back home in England :)

I'm an American. My father's parents were from Poland. In the late 1800's and the early 1900's large numbers of people from Central and Eastern Europe came to the area to work in the coal mines. Consequently, the area where I grew up (Luzerne County, Pennsylvania) has a very strong Polish flavor. Poles are to Luzerne County, Pennsylvania what Italians are to New York City--probably the dominant ethnic group. The dumplings you had are called pierogis. They're usually filled with mashed potatoes, sauteed onions and cheese but I had an aunt who filled some of them with sauerkraut and prunes. I don't know if this is typical or not. And the sausage is called kielbasa. Where I grew up, butchers with little neighborhood grocery stores would make their own kielbasa and sell it alongside other types of meat. It's traditionally made of pork. When my uncle from Delaware came back to Pennsylvania to visit my grandmother, he would always buy about 10 pounds of kielbasa and take it back to Delaware with him. I love having it with horseradish.

Amazing! Polish food is really underrated on the world cuisine market. We spent 10 days in Poland and didn’t have one bad meal. Only problem I had was I could pronounce or read the names of any of the dishes lol

@@RU-vid-Seany_Boyy_ Don't feel bad. I've read that Polish is one of the most difficult languages there is. Incidentally, my maternal grandfather's parents were from England and Wales. My great grandfather was a stonemason and bricklayer from Sidmouth, Devon, England and my great grandmother was from Blaenavon, Monmouthshire, Wales. I enjoy these clips of people from the UK traveling in Eastern Europe because I had ancestors from both places (plus Germany and Scandinavia). I can't travel to Europe at the moment so I have to do it vicariously. Keep up the good work.

@@meatwad1 yes polish is by far the hardest language I’ve tried to learn 🤦🏼‍♂️ Ah I know Sidmouth very well. It’s only 1hr away from my hometown. Monmouthshire is a lovely part of wales. Wales is beautiful country. You’ll have to visit them one day, see the land that your ancestors are from 🙂👍🏻

@@RU-vid-Seany_Boyy_ I just remembered something funny. I had an uncle from the non-Slavic side of my family who lived in the neighboring state of Delaware. About twice a year he would come to visit my grandmother. Whenever he was about to drive back to Delaware he would go to a little neighborhood grocery store in an adjacent town and buy about 20 pounds of kielbasa and take it home with him. In 1990 I moved out of state. I can buy mass produced kielbasa and it's good but I miss living in an area with a large Polish population and being able to buy kielbasa from butchers who make it themselves. None of them make it exactly the same way and I like having so many options. Oh, well. At least I'm no longer living in an economically depressed area.

Yes pierogi with cabbage and mushrooms are traditional and often eaten with homemade canola oil during Christmas. On eastern Poland we had many fillings for pierogi. I personally advice add some red papric powder or chilli to dough after they are nice and red 😄

Smalec is lard with pork cracklings and onions. In old days poor people did not eat butter that was for the rich so they spread lard on slices of bread with pickled cucumber (not always)That bread with smalec helped kill hunger during the day. Its tradition: bread, smalec and pickled cucumber but you have to grow up on it to like it.

You had the local cheeses on your plate. You eat these cheeses with cranberry sauce. :-) Hard, smoked sheep's cheese, this is oscypek. The soft, salty cheese is bryndza. And the soft, delicate cheese in the type of cottage cheese is bunc. Polish schabowy - pork chop and German schnitzel are brothers. These dishes are derived from the Viennese schnitzel. And the Viennese schnitzel is a poor version of the Milanese cutlet.

There's a little funny linguistic twist there. Polish "kotlet" refers generally to a piece of meat, that typically has been slightly beaten (with a special hammer or hand), so the meat fibers are more tender. As a result you get a piece of meat, that is large in terms of surface, but also thin. So, polish "kotlet schabowy" is a pork breaded cutlet coated with breadcrumbs, which is basically same thing as vienesse "Schnitzel". The twist here is, that in Poland (especially southern) you can also eat something, called "sznycel". The polish pronunciation of that word is almost identical to german "Schnitzel". However, what in southern Poland is called "sznycel" is actually very similar to german "Frikadelle", and it is a pan fried, slightly flat meatball made with a mixture of minced meat, onion, fresh egg and a stale bun (which has been dipped in water or milk until it became soft and runny), with some addition of spices, of course. Much like the actual "Schnitzel", also those minced meat, fried meatballs can be found in other countries, apart of Poland - Germany or Sweden for example (though in Sweden they are boiled, not fried, I think). The "fat" you had on your "appetizer plate" might have been a pork lard with cracklings. Those cracklings ("skwarki") are very tasty, and the whole preparation is actually very easy. You just need to cut pork fatback into sufficiently large cubes, and then just melt it in a deep pan. At some point, all the fat gets extracted from the cracklings due to temperature, so they are actually quite dry. Believe it or not, there's an actual polish recipe for making great , sweet cookies, which use those cracklings as a base. Also, you had those on your meat dumplings (pierogi z mięsem). These cracklings make a lot of things taste different and better. Just try to make scrambled eggs and use pork lard with cracklings instead of butter or other fat - you'll see the difference. Also, for polish people (especially older ones), there's nothing more simplistic and tasty, than a slice of fresh bread covered with some of this pork lard with cracklings and some salt sprinkled on top. Just don't eat too much of that, as it will induce heartburn.

If my grammar or structure of comment is not correct, i'm sorry:( i'm still learning english. Thank you for adoring our country ❤ (If you will go somewhere else in Poland (to the city other than Zakopane and cities like that in general) you can taste our local cuisine which is different in every other region - "żurek", "pierogi with sweet cheese", "kluski śląskie with meat and kapusta zasmażana", "barszcz czerwony" etc. :)

Polish food is simple but super tasty, come on it has a lot of calories, you will lose them quickly in the mountains. It has a lot of calories because it was associated with the old climate, which has changed dramatically now - there were 4 seasons clearly different from each other, now it's only hot summer around 30 C and autumn -5 C on average. Only in the mountains there is no shortage of snow.

I believe, that if You would like to reach more polish viewers please don’t call orders “cheap” so often and putting such an emphasis on it. We can afford them, You can afford them, that’s it. Better to say “it’s good quality for the price”, “it would be much more pricy in England”. “Cheap” is somewhat degrading adjective considering place, people and quality, especially when it’s really good. We know economic differences of people throughout Europe and EU. Nonetheless, I will follow.
