I set out exploring new water looking for tarpon, but with none to be found I decided to try kayak shark fishing for the first time. Mistakes were made and lessons learned. A couple of surprise catches near the end rounded out an excellent trip.

Graftops can be used for bait if you cut the 3 barbs! Hook into a lot and even grouper if you go offshore structure fishing! Also scrub or spray down the slime off, fry with peanut oil and some cornmeal with you’re favorite spices. You got a decent catfish dinner! Keep on fishing on from a PNW fan and fisherman! Tight lines to you John!

Those size sharks are fun to catch, I get a lot of bonnet-head and blacktip sharks im my area. Two years ago a 8 ft nurse shark took me for a big ride before I could break it off (as you using 50 lb braid) it swam with a friend almost as big. My anchor caught up on something and was ripped off the kayak.

My least favorite thing about kayaking is dealing with boat traffic. The scary part is the amount of boats that could care less about powering down for a second not to wake you. A tip I would give you for shark fishing in florida, even for smaller sharks would be to use a long, heavy monofilament leader of at least 80 lbs to your short wire leader. The long mono leader will be a act as a shock absorber for the sharks rough skin, which is what I think cut your 50 lbs braid that time.

@matthewfeit9046 4 года назад
John Skinner Fishing Noted. I wasn’t sure if the Carbon Shield you were using in your videos was the 7’ or the 7’ 6”. I followed the link you kindly and conveniently provided to the J & H website. It looks like with the exception of the # of guides and rear grip length the specs are the same on both the 7’ and 7’6” in terms of what they are rated for . Is that accurate? How can they both weight 6oz, both be rated for 10-20 lb test, and both have the same lure rating of 1/8 to 3/4 ounces if one is 6 inches longer? Assuming that is accurate what is the benefit of the extra 6 inches? Casting Distance when used from shore? I assume the 7’ is easier to accurately cast into the mangroves/docks from a seated kayak position? Thanks in advance for your expert opinion and thank your for providing consistent quality entertaining content. I am living vicariously through you while stuck in quarantine up here in the northeast. Nice Gaftop catfish, also beware of the Hardhead catfish, for their fins will absolute put a nasty fiery pain of hurt!!! Some folks will eat them, not not very many. I know you are a professional on placing hooks on live bait, but JUST incase you didn't know, one good place for that lady fish hook placement would be right above the anal hole. Why? For better natural live movement of this prey for its predator. If you already knew this, then my apologies for wasting your time.
@JohnSkinnerFishing

I really appreciate the hook placement advice. I very rarely use bait of any kind. I'm making an exception for now for the tarpon because I really want to hook up and I know live ladyfish are candy to them. I assume you mean through the top of the back, correct?
