Who should wear a kilt? We'd say anyone with the Celtic spirit.
Where should you go the first time you wear the kilt?
It's a question every man who decides to don the kilt has to answer. For some of us it's easy. Just another day with the Pipe band perhaps. Or maybe you have friends who already wear the kilt.
But if you are unsure of the reaction you will get, it can be a challenge. Guys living in smaller communities often tell us that it took some nerve to go kilted for the first time.
For a teenager who wants to wear the kilt, it can be particularly challenging; especially if you don't have access to transportation. So what are your options?
There are actually many places you can kilt up and feel like you have some control over the situation. For example a Costume party, the Renn fair, a convention or a Celtic festival. However sometimes those events are not ready when YOU are. The best advice for that situation is to pick a place you already know and are comfortable being in, and go with friends. Having a squad of kilt-friendly people around will always help.

Wore my kilt to youth group today lol. Wear mine to school and church and hangouts on the regular and everybody loves it! I’m 16 and started wearing them regularly a year ago. Always grew up around them though.

I started wearing my kilt a year ago (im 17) and I started wearing it because of history and clan/family reasons I’ve worn it to restaurants, family get togethers, and stores. My surename is Broun/Brown and the next thing I’m going to buy is going to be from you guys, the brown family tartan. If there are any teens that read this comment I will say for me it was really easy to start wearing my kilt in public but for you it may not be so easy, my point is it’s a mental peak that you have to get over and once you gain enough confidence it will be very worth it, trust me.

I wish I could have learned of my Scottish heritage much earlier than I did but I was a Teenager in the 70's and computers didn't come in until much later and they didn't make it to my school until the year after I graduated. But if I could have known then what I know now, I would have begged my Parents to buy me a Kilt and PC so I could wear it to prom. I would have earned a very different reputation from the one I had then. I can't help thinking that it would have been a big hit on dates too. Girls do love a man in a kilt. I am Clan MacLean on my Dad's side and Clan Smith on my Mom's side. Both are Highland Clans and Both are affiliated with Clan Chattan Confederation Clan Smith through Clan MacPherson all of whom fought at Coloden Moore in 1746. Clan MacLean even has a Headless horseman in it! Imagine my pride in learning all of this! I also did the research on my wife's heritage and found that she is clan Wood, and that her Step Dad is Clan Craig. Since then I have done research on many Scottish Clans and have information on a good many of them now having become something of a hobby for me.

A teenager in the wild, flamboyant 70's? How fun!! You could've rocked a kilt at your Senior Prom! I found a pic of my older brother and his date from back then. He had long hair, and wore a pale yellow tuxedo that was BLOOMING with lotsa ruffles, lol. I laughed and told him he looked like a daffodil! (I was a mean six year old girl, lol) Our Dad deplored "nationalism", he wouldn't ALLOW us to celebrate our ancestry. He said that an accident of birth wasn't an accomplishment, we were AMERICANS, period. (He was a jerk. BIG drinker!) As a red-haired kid, it would've been nice to combat bullies with, "I'm a SCOTTISH, duh!", or any time somebody tried to *quantify* me with, "Where'd you get that red hair?", then expecting me to turn into a leprechaun, or something! I got a dna test done, and yup! PREDOMINANTLY Scots/Irish/British, w German and French on Mom's side. I think people are kinder to their children these days. (Sorry for the rambling overshare, lol! As always, I blame quarantine!)

Supermarket, gas station, and drug store is where I started wearing. I reasoned that these are places where everyone is too focused on getting there shopping done and getting out of there to take much notice if my kilt. Oh, and mowing the lawn and yard work. But now I'll wear one anywhere, anytime I want to, dressed down as far as combat boots and a T-shirt, to office dress with a Braemar, to full black tie complete with a rack of my earned military medals in miniature on the left lapel of my PC jacket.

I was 27 when I got my first kilt (please don't ask how long ago that was!). Mostly over the years it was to highland games and such, but lately (since I found USA Kilts a year and a half ago) I've been wearing kilts to church and out to eat. I got into kilts for heritage alone. Now, I'm into kilts because they are just way more comfortable than pants!

I was 46 when I got into kilts. The first place I wore mine was to work, and I teach in an elementary school. That was a fun day. It was during Teacher Appreciation Week, and the theme on Friday was "Wear what makes you feel comfortable", so I wore my kilt. I got a lot of looks, a lot of "Mr. Cooper is wearing a skirt", and a lot of teaching about what a kilt is. Towards the end of the school year I started wearing them every day, and I wore them every day during summer school. I love wearing them. I wear them everywhere. In fact, most people don't even know me in the bar, if I'm not in a kilt. I love wearing them. I'm up to 12 kilts and want more.

Bought my first kilt at a Renaissance Faire just recently and put it on in the kilt maker’s dressing room. Did not feel out of place at all wearing it there! After that, i started wearing it on saturdays around the house. Getting married in a kilt in less than a month and wanted to muster up more courage so i put it on and went out shopping with my fiancée! I now own two kilts with a third on the way! Sadly none from USA Kilts YET! I want to save up for a Jacobite tartan kilt from you guys. You need afterpay or paypal pay in 4 haha!

Just found this channel. I was catching up about "the kilt walk" which is a charity event in Scotland that usually walk 25 miles. First time in a kilt when I was a child and going to a wedding. The only time I've really worn a kilt has been at a few weddings. New subscriber from Aberdeenshire, Scotland. Keep up the work folks

I started wearing my family tartan at about 59 and took the dive in the German city of Heidelberg, not knowing anyone there, walking down the High Street on a shopping day when the city was full. Many looks, many comments and compliments, and an amazing number of people who simply took photographs. Great boost to personal confidence and comfort as a result.

I was lucky enough to have a school that wears kilts for our pipe band, so I got the experience of wearing a kilt before wearing it as casual wear. So I'm 17 currently with 2 kilts, saving up to buy one a year.

I was in my late 30's and wore my first kilt to a renfaire. Since then I've worn a kilt out to dinner with friends, to church, to Christmas festivals, the grocery store, etc. I've known several teens who wanted to their kilt to school. In that instance I recommended instead of underwear they wear running shorts under the kilt. The running shorts don't inhibit the sway of the pleats, are comfortable and provide an additional layer of modesty in the event of accidental flashing. It also tends to get mom's approval.

I am almost 82 years old and wanted to see what it feels like for a woman at my age to own a kilt...So ,making my first one to the ankle and going shorter to my knees later- depending on the fabric I can afford to buy and all the accessories I will need to dress the garment up...Ha,.ha. My Grandfather's parents came from Ireland--sort of Scotch's.. and he talked of the kilt all the time. He also done the Iris what he called the Jogging tap-dance. NO I m not ready to learn to click them toes and heel yet.

I just got a visit from a lady asking if a Victoria was here, Idk anyone by that name and that's what I told her. Not 2 seconds later the mail man came with my sporran, I put it on immediately and I got another knock, who was a police officer I've known for years, saying the lady think's I did know a Victoria, but the conversation switched too kilts and he gave me a fist bump. I never wore a kilt before.

The first place I wore mine that wasn't just around the house for an hour was to the local store to run errands. That way if it all went wrong I was still close to home so I could bail out. But no need, it felt like a second skin and I just felt at home. Nunquam Non Paratus! Clan Johnston/e

I wore my first kilt at 12. To the person asking this, I'm sorry you may have problems at school like I did. First day I wore it my classmates for riled up and wouldn't shut up and I was told I had to go change, because I was being disruptive. Didn't matter that I wasn't speaking. After that I just started wearing it outdoors on hikes, and some family events. For an accessible place to get kilt like items, I recommend checking thrift stores for plaid or mono colored tablecloths to modify. This is what I did and it was a very affordable way to begin. Biggest piece of advice is get used to people looking at you, and their advice about how and where to start was good. Generally it's not bad or rude attention but it takes getting used to.

A buddy of mine wore a full dress kilt set up to prom but, we also had a guy wear a full mossy oak camo suit with hunter orange accents and drove a Peterbilt 359 to the venue. People noticed the kilt but, didn't make fun or focus on it all night. Lots of pictures though.

Rick’s Rules for Wearing a Kilt for the First Time: 1. Be bold. Be confident. Put your shoulders back and your chest out. Swagger. Own your look. Be a rock star! 2. Don’t “dress down” your kilt in an attempt to avoid stares. Do the opposite: dress it up. You are in a kilt: you are going to get stares no matter what. Take their breath away! 3. Go where people are well-mannered. For a young person, wear it for the first time to a place where adults go: a Shakespeare play. An art museum. A cultural event. Go where people will compliment you on your look and share their heritage with you. 4. Have answers to the obvious questions. Woman: “Are you wearing anything under that kilt?“ Response: “Why? Are you looking for a date?“ Woman: “What are you wearing under that kilt?“ Response: “If you show me yours I’ll show you mine.“ (These are my go-to responses. They’re not necessarily age-appropriate). A little while ago I went to a local bar with my Scottish lady friend. There was a group of about six young adults at the bar. When I walked in, eyes got big and conversation stopped. How did I respond? I bellowed out “IT’S NAE A PARTY ‘TILL THE SCOTS ARRIVE!“ I did not have to pay for a drink all night. 🤣

I hiked up near Altoona, Pa near the Lemon House in March (last month). It was cold out but the American Highlander kilt I had on was warm as pants would be. The few people I encountered on the trail paid little attention. Then when I got back to NC I hiked in up near Pilot Mountain. Again, nobody cared. They acted like I had regular pants on.

I have Covid to thank for making me a kilt wearer. I started working from home and quickly found out that taking off the boots --> putting on pants --> pulling boots back on --> getting the mail --> taking off boots --> taking off pants --> putting on boots was seriously aggravating my arthritis-ridden back and hips. I was complaining about this to a kilt-wearing friend. He said, "Duh! Get a kilt. Problem solved!" So I bought a couple utility kilts. They make life so much easier and my hips are pain free! I wear them all the time when doing errands around town. I've only gotten compliments. Then again, I live in metro NYC so that might have something to do with why few people notice.
