You're right - "Children of Children" is by generations. And inheritance. Jason Isbell is one of the best songwriters to have walked this earth. So many brilliant songs...

People will suggest Elephant or If We Were Vampires as follow ups and they are great songs, I would throw Live Oak and Songs She Sang in the Shower in the mix as well though he has dozens of other great songs.

Jason Isbell's mother was only 17 when he was born, only a child. So he is "Children of Children", and he feels guilt about "all the years I took from her, just by being born". He feels he stole the ears she was supposed to be a youth growing up by being born. Very personal song. Take any Isbell song. Especially from the album "Southeastern". Cover Me Up, Elephant. And any live version. He's amazing live. To quote John Mayer: "Jason Isbell is the best lyric writer of my generation. He lives at a level where even great writers can only visit".

This song is about breaking the cycle of young 15 to 16 poor Southereners just having babies too young. His mom was 16 I think when she had him. He waited until he was past 20 and got questioned why he waited so long to have kids.
