Hello Dr. Marisan [Master Singing] ! Nightwish fan here, your musical quest summoned me. Welcome to the world of symphonic metal! And thank you for checking this legendary band! This live recording is from Wacken Open Air 2013, together with Floor Jansen [pronounced Yansen], the 3rd and present female singer of the band, in front of an 82K audience. I REALLY enjoyed your vocal analysis, hope you'll check more Nightwish's songs in the near future! About the instrumental and vocal added parts - it's good to know they recorded their orchestral and vocal back tracks with prestigious institutions as London Philharmonic Orchestra. London's The Metro Voices choir group and London's Young Musicians Children's Choir as their regular partners. Since this is your first Nightwish reaction, it is my duty to give you the [updated] short history of the band concentrated by Ann Waychoff, one of the biggest Nightwish fan who has since passed away (and I am doing this in her memory): " Nightwish was started in 1996.They are considered a Symphonic Metal band, with a female main singer. They are from Finland. Tuomas Holopainen [pronounced Tuo-mas], the keyboard player, composes and writes the lyrics for 95% of their music. [Sami Vanska was the bassist of the band starting with their 2nd studio album, he was with them until 2001. Then Marco Hietala was bassist and vocals, since 2001 to 2020. He recently announced his retirement both from the band and the public life for the next year at least. Then in May 2021 Jukka Koskinen [pronounced Yukka] became the bassist of the band, for the Human :II: Nature tour - and recently, the band announced he became a permanent member] And there is the guitarist Emppu Vuorinen [he also recorded the bass lines for their 1st studio album]. Then there is Troy Donockley from UK who is a multi-instrumentalist and vocals. Jukka Nevalainen [pronounced Yukka] is the drummer. In 2015 due to Jukka's health issues Kai Hahto became the drummer and as of now is a permanent addition. Nightwish has had three singers. 1st one was Tarja Turunen [pronounced Tarr-ya] (Operatic vocals). She was with them until 2005. The 2nd one was Anette Olzon from Sweden (Poppy, strong vocals). She was with them until 2012.The 3rd and current singer is Floor Jansen, from Netherlands (power, operatic, soprano.....most versatile) - you just heard her. There are live concerts that you should use depending on what era. From Wishes to Eternity and End of an Era (Tarja), Montreux Festival live 2012 and Exit Festival (Anette), Live at Wacken 2013, Live at Wembley, Live at Tampere, Vehicle of Spirit, Decades live (Floor). Floor has said that the 2013 Wacken concert was a magical experience. Apparently the crowd was giving out some incredible energy and nearly every band that performed that night put on one of their best performances. Bands really do feed off of the crowd, and that Wacken audience was the absolute best of the best.

I remember when this live performance first happened. I have seen her live do this song and till this day its the only time I teared up at a concert. When I saw this particular performance, I turned to my then boyfriend and said .... THIS WILL GO DOWN IN BEST LIVE METAL PERFORMANCES EVER!! I was SHOCKED people weren't recognizing it more at that time. I played this for almost everyone I knew at the time. Then about 7 years after its upload I saw TONS of reactions on youtube of it. Seems like it's getting another resurgence again this past year .... AS IT SHOULD .... FOREVER!!

"She must have practiced a lot" - in fact, she had 48 hours to learn the entire show in mid tour - amazing...

Drummer was KILLIN' IT!!!

That concert was 1:38 long and they recorded this at 1 hour 10 minutes, Floor was belting out songs and windmilling the whole concert. She did take off a 6 minute instrumental to change. She started off in long pants. She is a Valkyrie (sp) Goddess. Welcome to Nightwish!

Masterpiece! Tuomas is a genial composer. Empu, Marko and Jukka are outstanding musicians. Floor is the most versatile and the most complete vocalist ever! In this performance she keeps impressing us with switching techniques, perfect diction, range, breath control and her gigantic stage presence. After almost 2 hours of live show, at the end, she changed from head to belt in the same note and she sustained that final note by 8.3 seconds! Floor is untouchable, really divine! Hail to the Queen of Metal Realm!

I've known Floor's voice (and that of her younger sister Irene - which is amazing too!) for many years, and the fun part? Floor's still getting better with each album... And it's not just the voice - her entire performance and enthusiasm is so infectious when she's on stage, which makes the singing seem totally effortless. She's a true gem 🙏

Floor's hair whip after she says "adoring beast" gets me every time. She's a goddess. I'm so thankful I got to see her perform with Nightwish live.

And now you know why so many suggest Floor Jansen as she doesn't just sing but tells every story because she has such versatility in her voice. You will find so many recordings of her singing everything from Vilja Lied and O Mio Babbino Caro. to Wild Card with her previous band ReVamp where she growls. For another Nighwish song with a glissando to D6 try Romanticide at this same concert Wacken 2013. For a really expressive performance it is worth listening to The Poet And The Pendulum at Wembley 2015 which is outpouring of the composer's feelings whilst suffering depression. Best with subtitles.

If Floor's switching from head voice to chest voice impressed you, you should check out "Romanticide". She and bassist Marko Hietala do a slide from the bottom to near the top of her range, which she holds for a moment, before sliding back down. Only singer I've ever heard who can shift vocal gears as radically as Floor is Kristin Chenoweth, in "The Girl in 14-G".

welcome to the fantastic symphonic metal universe of Nightwish Band, their live performances are some of the things that come so close to epic that they get to be mythical and of course Floor Jansen, queen of the stage and goddess of music, she can sing anything in any musical style she wants (WARNING! her voice, her stage presence, her charisma, in one word: her "spell" is highly addictive). this concert (wacken 2013) is incredibly epic and deserves to be watched and reacted entirely, song by song, in particular I suggest these three songs: "song of myself", "storytime" and "ever dream" this performance of "ghost love score" is one of the three best performances of the nightwish band, together with "the poet and the pendulum" from 2015 concert at the london wembley arena and "the greatest show on earth" from 2015 concert in tampere - finland (actually there is a fourth best performance: "dead boy's poem" from the 2018 concert in buenos aires).

The breath control and ability to sing very long phrases without having to take a breath blew me away.

Late to this video, but it never gets old seeing someone hear Nightwish for the first time.

I had to chuckle when you referred to Floor's metal growl. That was just a gentle purr. Wait until you hear the real thing. Floor can cut from clear singing to a false cord death growl and back to clear singing on the same breath. In her old band ReVamp, she would go from a death growl to an operatic head voice in the span of a single note. This song showcases her theatrical talents and her ability to weave various vocal techniques together to tell a story. Back then this was heavy metal, angry Floor and she cuts a swath through vocal techniques in this song. She created and managed ReVamp, so she had full creative control of their music.

Hi Dr. Marisan. Thank you for this wonderful reaction to our beloved Nightwish with Floor Jansen. Thankfully, today, we got the fantastic news that Floor Jansen is completely free of cancer after her breast surgery three weeks ago. Thanks to regular screening, they caught the tumor early and all lymph node screening turned out negative so it had not spread. To hear Floor really going operatic and bringing the audience to tears, I highly recommend the exceptional video and audio quality of her performance with Nightwish of Shoemaker at this year's Deichbrand 2022 nighttime festival. Floor is an absolutely amazing singer, I've known her since the early days in After Forever, and just saw her perform with Nightwish in Dublin last Wednesday. If you didn't know she was still recovering from surgery, you wouldn't have noticed it at all in the performance.

Floor was diagnosed with early stage 1 Breast cancer about 6 weeks ago, when she returened from their South American tour she underwent surgery to remove the tumor and the operation was 100% successful and she is now cancer free, and after about 3 or 4 weeks recovery she and the band started their European tour. Floor, being an empath took the crowd energy and used it to regain her 100% form, although the first show in Antwerp during "Sleeping Sun" she did break down, and it was so beautiful seeing the guys come to support her, Emppu(the guitarist was crying his eyes out as was Kai the drummer and Troy, Tuomas bowed to her, and the then the Gentle Giant Jukka comforted her, she left the stage for a few minutes and returned to the loudest ovation i have ever heard. Watch it you will be moved to tears.

Always a pleasure to watch an analysis from a genuine professional. We already know Floor is amazing. But it’s really nice to become better educated in why we feel the way we do about Floor’s vocals and better understand the processes involved. The more I learn about vocal techniques and strategies the more impressed I become with Ms. Jansen. So thank you for bringing me up to higher level of appreciation. :-)

Well, you've just experienced maybe 10% of Floor's range. And you have yet to hear her duet with Marco, the bass player who will also blow you away. This is one of the most accomplished bands in music right now. This concert at Wacken is one of the best recorded technically, and I would recommend you stick with this one, or Wembley Arena or Tampere (the band's home concert in Finland). If you enjoy a good vocal glissando, try Romanticide. Later on you can enjoy major symphonic movements with The Greatest Show On Earth, which is a tribute to Dr. Richard Dawkins' book on evolution. Floor does some genuine metal growls in that one. But the choice really is not important. For most people, their favourite Nightwish song is the one they just listened to. They are all different.

The song "Stargazers" from the Tampere 2015 show. Also, Storytime from this same 2013 show. So many great performances. Maybe the 2019 Beste Zangers dutch TV show she sang Vilja Lied and nailed it.

It’s also great to see someone leaving behind their preconceived ideas about metal music and recognising that great music crosses all genres. Floor Jansen is a vocal gift to the world. I've had the pleasure of listening to this woman sing for at least the last 16 years. Stumbled across After forever after hearing Nightwish's Phantom of the Opera with Tarja. Heard Monolith of doubt by after Forever and have been hooked ever since. Floors voice has to be one of the best (if not the best voices) in rock/metal. If not pop if you've heard her cover on Best Zangers (forgive spelling) I'm so glad more and more people are finding out just how good she is!
