Skullz reacts to Eulogy by Tool
Tool is an American rock band from Los Angeles. Formed in 1990... due to Tool's incorporation of visual arts and very long and complex releases, the band is generally described as a style-transcending act and part of progressive rock, psychedelic rock, and art rock. The relationship between the band and today's music industry is ambivalent, at times marked by censorship, and the band's insistence on privacy....Tool has won four Grammy Awards, performed worldwide tours, and produced albums topping the charts in several countries.

16:25 is the nastiest drum beat. I took drum lessons back in the day and my teacher was mainly into jazz and classical music and I was flipping through his vinyl while waiting for him to set up and of the 100+ albums which were all jazz, classical and some classic rock this Tool album was in there and he was totally obsessed with it. The main reason he got the album was to learn that beat at 16:25 but soon learned the whole album is a masterpiece!

Lots of mystery around the whispered lyrics in this song, and truth is we will all never know or agree. When you started reading them I was like wtf, cuz they were so different than how I first learned them 20 years ago. My lyrical take (worth nothing btw): “You could be the one to save me from my own existence.” “I was so sure I’d sin and you’d pay too. I’m just glad that you knew me enough to always sit by you. So mad since you stopped giving all your commands. You weren’t too mad when he called you. Your mind is helpless.” I’m positive I’m way off, but that’s what 20+ years of singing a song one way does. Lol. Great video man. Ride that spiral to the end.

I have very much enjoyed taking this ride with you and I very much admire your insight and perspective. Based on my personal interpretation of the work I feel that you are mostly on target with your analysis. One thing I've heard heard several times recently from several reactioners and not just you is that Maynard 'does not like religion' or is 'against Christianity'. While that may or may not be I feel that statements like that are irrelevant if not actually inaccurate. It detracts from the point that is being made from perhaps a higher level. I would argue that Maynard is against ignorance and stupidity. To that end he and the band have dedicated their professional lives to inspiring their listeners and our species as a collective whole to engage in a level of critical thought that would allow us to transcend those barriers we have created for ourselves. He once introduced the song opiate by saying "Ever here of some guys named Mohammed or Krishna or Jesus Christ? They all had some great ideas that got all fucked up by their 'agents'. Never trust an agent. This is a song about those agents." I hope that helps and I appreciate you and your time.
@Skullzrapper

I agree completely! When people say this song is about Jesus or Hubbard, it just feels like a superficial analysis. There is a deeper metaphysical analysis and that's why people relate so deeply to these songs 💯 Appreciate your comment!

what i love most about maynard is that most of the time there is an ambiguity inserted into the lyrics (not always of course) that leaves it up to the listener to interpret the meanings by interjecting ones own experiences into it. turns out this song is about me. the old ass hole me that has since passed away because i murdered him, my old self was willing to die for my future self. its amazing how well Maynard understands me :D

Is definitely a more complex album and they played a lot with his voice and he changed his voice more so to be softer or more clear then in the last album... There's a lot of talking or spoken word it seemed like her spoken singing. But they definitely went a different way on their style. It's the same but then again it's different. And on a different note what kind of education have you received? I feel you have gotten some sociological training on the way you break things down in your thoughts set. just curious.. I do enjoy your breakdown and thoughts on the lyrics as always. I find it very interesting on your breakdown for sure Keep up the good work bro can't wait for you to hear the rest of the album. I tend to go in the opposite direction. I'll listen to the song multiple times, focusing on the instruments with vocals in the background. I've recently come to think of the guitar "solo" towards the end of the song as a sonic metaphor for the leader/martyr giving one of their speeches. This is another Tool song that touches on the subject of the dissipation of the ego. Prior to Eulogy, Maynard used before the same concept on Part of Me and Bottom, and he will use it again in the next record. Crucifying the ego is a common theme throughout Tool's discography because the lyrics are outlining Maynard's own evolution.
@Skullzrapper

@@Skullzrapper I think some of them are about him, and I think he definitely draws on his experiences for others, but I think some songs are just ideas that he explores using other people/events/writings as a foundation. He is a genius at finding parallels and using those to drive the narrative and I think the next two albums really show this trend. I think Undertow and Aenima are more personal, but I think in later albums he's let some of that go and explored bigger ideas.

Was directly in response to Jesus supposed last words on the cross. "Father, why hast thou forsaken me." And although it speaks to the man, it's actually pointing out the flaws in the concept.

Some have said it's partly a eulogy to bill hicks who the album is dedicated too. The, uncaring, lyrics, seem to suggest annoyance or frustration they have died rather than genuine dislike. It's also coated with a layer of irony if you consider it a eulogy to jesus christ But also seems to have that layer of saying goodbye to the bad parts of his/our psyche. Many different meanings you can take from it what you feel imo

@Skullzrapper 2 года назад
Absolutely! I like to look at it from the pyscholgical perspective the most just because I feel it's the deepest layer but I can see the others layers as well! Especially Maynards frustration with religion! I also like to think of him talking about politicians lol. Amazing song! 🔥🔥🔥

@@Skullzrapper on the note you make about the psychological. They explore elements of the philosophy of psychiatrist Carl Jung, which heavily deals with the idea of the self, identifying and connecting with the bad parts of the "self" in order to evolve psychologically. Jungian philosophy is deep and long, but of you are unfamiliar with it, a read of the Wikipedia article will give you an ides of the concepts and will help explain some of the more esoteric lyrics. Especially as you get deeper onto the album, and explicitly the song 46 and 2. Enjoy may, I'm enjoying your reaction and analysis

The comments have been crazy with the interpretations! It's awesome! Just goes to show how great Maynard is as an ambiguous lyricist 💯 I think it's a song about any false prophets in general. Anyone or anything (introspectively or extrospectively speaking) promising to lead you to paradise but ultimately being a liar. 🔥

Now, I hold a really special place in my heart for this song here. The year was 1996, and Ryan Allman and I had just bought the album when it came out. We had already heard Stinkfist as it was a single that had been played fairly frequently on the radio. However, when it skipped to Eulogy, THAT’S the moment that TOOL changed my life FOREVER!!! I mean, I was in a band at that time, and that’s the moment that we realized that we were shit!!! 😂 This song is so complex in its simplicity that it blew me away on my 1st listen of it. AND, ( again - *I* believe ) it’s the 1st time that I heard TOOL go on a more “experimental” direction, and I absolutely LOVED where they were gonna take me too!!!! Also, I think that the sooner that you know that the entire album is all about Bill Hicks, the better off you’d be. 😉

I recommend "getting into that state", turning the lights off, and giving the full album a play though one of these days.

On a completely different note, have you listened to Heilung yet? Their live concert LIFA is *amazing* (it's on youtube), and I think you may enjoy it, after you have finished with Lateralus, before beginning 10000 Days. Krigsgaldur is where most start, especially as it stars Maria Franz's voice so amazingly.

Tool has been my favorite band from the first time I heard Opiate. Deciphering their songs can be difficult and can have a different meaning from person to person. However, I've always thought that Eulogy was about stand-up comedian Bill Hicks as he and Maynard were friends.

This is the first album with Justin Chancellor after having Paul D'Amour on Opiate/Undertow. They brought in David Bottrill to produce this album (Also did Lateralus) because they were such a fan of his work with King Crimson who were a big influence to them. There is a Tool Doc called "The Ultimate Review" (it's here on youtube) which tells a lot of their early years, and a lot of the backstory for this album.
