In today’s vlog we hang out at home! We head to Target for some baby formula but of course find some cute kids clothes too! We show you all the cute stuff when we get back. We also make beef picadillo for the first time and I think it turned out pretty good! I’m excited to try to make it again with all of the ingredients. Then Tim has to perform surgery on our suitcase! Jenn! Speaking as a Puerto Rican married to a Cuban man, lol, I am very impressed with your picadillo! I think you did a great job! Whenever we make it in our household, we love to add sweet plantains on the side. Raisins are the traditional Cuban way of making it but It’s really more of a personal preference. Awesome job!

Hi Jenn! My memory kicked out a piece of information that might resolve Oliver's sleep issues. When my kids were teething there was serious pressure/pain that kept waking them up when they were laying flat in their cribs. Try taking one of your triangular pads Jackson used to climb on and putting it under Oliver's mattress to elevate his head and take the pressure off his teeth and jaws. It was an instant cure for us...hope it is for you too!

Raisins are honestly optional. Every country has their version of picadillo, and most don’t include raisins. Onions, garlic and tomatoes are really the common denominator throughout Latin America. Looks great Jen! I love how you’re always getting Tim and Jackson to try new things!

For me when I have to get rid of grease in a pan, I take a paper towel and stir it around the pan until the grease is gone.

I sympathize with you both. My first son, who is like a week younger than Jackson, was a terrible sleeper for almost a year. It was ROUGH. We eventually gave in and bought the online course called Taking Cara of Babies, ABCs of Sleep. It's similar to the Ferber method, but with more frequent checkins. Once we started him on this, he slept through the night within a week. I can't recommend it enough and it honestly saved my sanity.

We found what really helped both of our kids sleep better was putting themselves to sleep at night. We rocked them for a bit and then put them down to fall asleep on their own. That way if they woke up in the middle of the night they weren’t started that they didn’t wake up in the same place they fell asleep (being rocked) and would put themselves back to sleep. Both our kids were great sleepers and we think this really helped

Use paper towels to soak up the grease from the ground beef. Then you don’t have to worry about leaking in the trash.

Jenn your Picadillo came out pretty spot on! A little trick my mom taught me is to put the veggies in a food processor to chop them up so they come out perfectly small and blend into the beef well. Also recommend frying some plantains on the side!

One thing that worked for me, as far as putting baby down in the crib after rocking to asleep, was to move the crib away from the wall. It doesn't look pretty, but having the crib perpendicular from the wall, rather than right up against it, allows you to put him in the crib from either direction. However, Sometimes there's just no rhyme or reason to why babies will or will not sleep. My first baby was much like Jackson. My 2nd baby didn't sleep through the night until almost 3 years old (but she's now my BEST sleeper), and my 3rd baby slept so well that I had to set my alarm every 4 hours to wake her for a feeding (which was a whole 'nuther kind of stress). These kids are determined to give us grey hairs - LOL

I sleep trained my 1yr old son at 5mo. The best thing I ever did! I would ditch the rocking to sleep as they use this as a crutch. And try age appropriate wake windows! My son turned 1 last week and I do 2 naps still and really watch the wake windows. Hope that helps baby Oliver get some sleep! And mom and dad too 😊

To get rid of grease, I put aluminum foil in a non plastic bowl. I push the foil into the bowl, with a couple of inches sticking out of the bowl. Pour the grease into the foil, and let it cool. Once cool twist the extra foil up, and toss in the trash.

Just a thought... If baby is dealing with reflux, that means there is acid in his esophagus. Maybe laying him flat brings acid up his throat? Tim, you know what it feels like. Raise the head of his bed up one notch maybe?

Tips for picadillo. The veggies yes chop smaller, cook the veggies first. The veggies you used is your sofrito. Then you add the meat to cook and brown.

Oo I love those wheel replacements. I replaced my wheely chair wheels with those similar rollerblade ones and it glides sooo much smoother. Also doesn’t ruin the floors with those crappy plastic wheels. Although I roll across the entire room now because it’s a bit too smooth 😅

Not sure if someone already mentioned this in the comments but about twice a year target does a thing where you can turn in your old car seat and get a discount coupon for like 30% or 40% off your next car seat so if he can hold out until they have one of those you should do that, it’s great savings.

Picadillo tips: I prefer using ground Turkey because it isn’t as fatty. Start by cooking that until it begins to brown, remove from pan. Then cook down your onion, garlic, peppers, and tomato first. You really want them to become part of the sauce. We call it sofrito. Throw in whole olives, or if they’re too big then half them. I also add capers. I don’t like putting raisins in Picadillo as I believe it’s supposed to be more savory than sweet. Add back in your ground meat, tomato sauce, juice from the olive and caper bottles, and spices. Let it go low and slow for as long as you can be patient for. The more you let it integrate the better the flavor profile. Add splashes of water as it begins to dry out. Finish with fresh cilantro. For your first time I think you did great Jenn! Just my recommendations to make it slightly better in my opinion. Source: I’m Cuban and Puerto Rican.

a thought on jacksons ear infections, when my brother was jacksons age and taking swim lessons the pool was really warm and enclosed and humid and it always caused ear infections, when he was pulled out of lessons there the ear infections cleared up and didnt come back when he had lessons in an outdoor pool

Regarding Oliver and his sleeping or possibly having reflux. My grandkids both had/have reflux. My now 2 yr old grandson had reflux as a baby and went through sleep regressions because of it. But what helped his reflux was AR formula. Rice baby cereal is good for that as well as gripe water. My 2 mth old granddaughter gets reflux every now. She drank formula and breastmilk for a few weeks after being born till my daughters milk really started to come in and now she’s a breastmilk baby, she might get maybe 1 formula bottle a day now. The formula is an AR formula and that helped her reflux along with gripe water as well. Now she’s doing really good. Also, with reflux they tend to spit up more than usual. If you think it’s reflux maybe talk to your pediatrician to be sure what the Dr suggest. Another thing that helps my grandbabies sleep better is a lavender or melatonin bath before bedtime. It really calms them down before bed. The baby will get a bath and then her milk and she’s off to dreamland. My grandson will get a bath, have some one on one time with Mommy & Daddy, maybe read a book then my daughter sings his lullaby and goodnight. 😊 Both kids sleep with white noise and it’s never been a problem, on the contrary they sleep much better with it. 😊 Hope this helps Jen. You and Tim are amazing parents, you’ll get through this with Oliver. 🥰

Picadillo is something that every house makes differently. My mom used rasins, but I don't. Sometimes I use leftover pasta sauce instead of the tomato sauce. I usually don't use peppers. What I'm trying to say is that you can make it any way you like.
