Quick lesson: most hits to a player facing the glass or boards is generally illegal and hits in open ice are only allowed if the player is in possession or just had possession of the puck right before the hit. Thus the most often repeated saying, "Keep your head up!" because if you don't, regret is likely in your immediate future.

It's hockey. You get hit. You get up and you keep going if at all possible. It's funny watching soccer fans watch stuff like this. Their eyes bug out every time the player gets up and skates off like nothing happened.

hockey is not a contact sport. It is a collision sport. Players are 200 plus pounds skating at 30 mph colliding with other 200 pound guys going at similar speed. Its not for the faint hearted and I've loved this game since I started skating at age 3. Welcome to you my friend as a new hockey fan. Pick a team and strap in cuz it's gonna be fun.

This will be a bit of a longer one to answer your question about the main penalty rules in hockey: there are 3 main types of penalties: 1- The 2 Minute Minor (penalized player sits in what's called The Penalty Box for 2 minutes and his team plays short a man to a minimum of 3 players plus goalie. If the team with the man advantage scores during this 2 minutes, the rest of the penalty is ended) 2- 5 minute Major (penalized player sets in the penalty box for 5 minutes. These penalties always continue for the full 5 minutes, no matter how many goals the team with the man advantage scores during this time) 3- the Misconduct (these can be assessed as a 10 minute penalty, or a game misconduct. The penalized team, in either case, does not play short handed while these penalties are being served, as they're more meant to penalize the individual player who committed an infraction then the entire team. These are usually attached to a 2 or 5 minute penalty, but don't have to be) The main penalties you'll see in a hockey game are: - Tripping (using your stick, legs, feet or other equipment to make a player trip and fall) - Holding (grabbing a hold of a player or any part of their equipment to obstruct with their ability to move and attack the puck) - Hooking (placing the blade of the stick in a player's midsection to slow them down) - Slashing (striking the player below the neck with the stick - Cross Checking (Striking the player with the stick held in both hands and thrusting it into the player) - High sticking (any blow with the stick that impacts the neck or head area of a player, normally 2 minutes but can be upgraded to a double minor or 5 minutes if an injury occurred) - Elbowing (striking another player with an elbow) - Kneeing (leading a hit with the knees, also sometimes called a "knee lock" and is infamous for causing knee injuries including ending the career of Bruins legend Cam Neely) - Charging (taking more then 3 strides or jumping while engaging in a body check) - Boarding (reckless hits into the boards, particularly ramming a player head first into the boards from behind, can be a 2 minute penalty or upgraded to double minor or 5 minute major [with automatic game misconduct and league review for additional fines and/or suspensions]) - Roughing (striking another player with the fist) - Interference (engaging in physical contact with a player who is not in possession of the puck nor has just stopped being in possession of the puck a moment before contact was made. Also making contact with the goalie while the goalie is attempting to play his position in the net) - Fighting (engaging in a fight, always 5 minutes) - Unsportsmanlike Conduct (usually assessed for trying to truck the refs into calling a penalty against the other team by diving or embellishing a play, or for excessively mouthing off at the refs) - Delay of Game (intentionally causing stoppages unnecessarily, the most common cause of this is shooting the puck out of play from the defensive zone, but can also include illegally freezing the puck to deaden the play, including closing the hand around the puck to prevent others from being able to play it (exception being the goalie who's allowed to use his goalie equipment to grab, freeze and control the puck to prevent goals) - Too Many Men On The Ice (each team is allowed 6 players on the ice when at full strength, and with penalties this number can be reduced by up to 2 players while the penalties are being served if a penalty would reduce a teams maximum number of players by more then 2, it will not start counting down until any other penalties putting the team short handed by 2 men have expired, either by the other team scoring a goal, or time runs out on the penalties. The typical line up is 3 forwards, 2 defensemen and 1 goalie, though teams can play 4 forwards and 1 defenseman or pull the goalie for an extra forward or defenseman) Having more then the regulation limit will result in a 2 minute penalty against the bench) The Delayed Penalty (if a penalty is being called, the ref will raise his arm up in the air, signaling it, but if the team victimized by the penalty has possession of the puck, they are allowed to continue the play until the penalized team gains control of the puck, strategically, the team about to get the extra attacker will pull the goalie for the empty net while the penalized team can't attack and get a 6th attacker on the ice to try and score even before the penalty is assessed) A few other infractions that don't involve penalties: - Offside (when a player enters the offensive zone, marked by a blue line across the ice, ahead of the puck, or the puck exits the zone and is brought back in before the attacking players have cleared the zone, except if the defending team plays it back into their own zone, the offside is negated once all offending players have exited the offensive zone, if an offside is assessed, it results in a stoppage of play and a faceoff just outside the defending team's zone) - Icing (clearing the puck past the other team's goal line, from their own side of the centre line (shots into the net don't count as icing as a goal is awarded to the team in that case) This results in a faceoff in the offending team's zone and the offending team is not allowed to make a line change (hockey term for substituting players as this is usually done as a unit of 3 man forward lines and 2 man defense lines or a full 5 man unit) This means the team must defend with tiered players until they can legally change lines) - Frozen puck (if the puck is stuck in a scrum for too long, at the ref's discursion, they can whistle play dead and call a faceoff to get the game moving again, this will also be called if the goalie holds onto the puck or it gets trapped in a player's equipment or on top of the net) - Ref loses sight of the puck (If the ref can't see the puck, he usually whistles play dead and resets with a faceoff, this is usually because it's lost underneath a player or in someone's equipment) - Puck out of play (if the puck goes over the boards and glass it's deemed out of play and results in a faceoff near where it left play)

If you want to watch a full game of hockey, this is the perfect time as we're in the playoffs. You can check out Game 6 of the Vancouver Canucks vs Edmonton Oilers series on Saturday at 5pm Pacific time. Great series, fierce rivalry developed between these teams in this series. Both close in the regular season standings, both with similar styles of play, Edmonton has 2 of the best hockey players in the world in Connor McDavid and Lion Draisaitl, Vancouver's got stars in Brock Boesser and his 40 goal season, JT Miller with over 100 points this season, Elias Pettersson has loads of talent though he slumped late in the season, and the Canucks have a rising star in goalie in rookie sensation Arturs Silovs (pronounced Shee-loffs).

Hockey is Kind of a mixture of everything. Full contact (Football), 5v5 (not counting goalies) and you have to play both offense and defense like Basketball, offsides and handling rules like Soccer, swing clubs around at the puck, on ice, with knife feet. Fouls are just called Penalties, can result in game ejections and suspensions, but often are just time that the offender is put in Time Out for 2 minutes of play (sometimes 4, 5, or 10 minutes for certain offenses and situations), and their team has to play with only 4 skaters. Examples include Elbows, Trips, punching, using the stick to strike someone else (Slashing, Hooking, High Stick, Cross check), or hitting someone who isn't playing or hasn't just played the puck (Interference). Especially rough hits can result in a Boarding, Roughing, or Charging call depending on the situation. About half of these in the video are certainly penalties, but penalties don't stop play and aren't assessed until the offending team has puck possession. You are ONLY allowed to make serious contact with the puck carrier, and not go around willy-nilly leveling defenders pre-emptively. Hits are defensive plays, and if you're lining someone up like in the video, you're sending a message, skipping their thoughts and drilling it into their body: "I'm not allowing you to do that today. Any other day, other team, other player might not stop you here, but I am." And the next time they find themselves in that situation, they'll think twice about making that same cut or who's one the other side of the blue line.

Now I've finished the video, to answer your question on how they score, the best place to start is with the 3 best players of all time at creating offense: 1- Wayne Gretzky (known simply as "The Great One" see his highlights and learn how many offensive records he holds and you'll see why) 2- Mario Lemieux (he'll amaze you with what this guy could do with the puck, his moves are legendary) 3- Bobby Orr (the first true rushing defenseman, he redefined how defensemen played their position in the NHL)

As much as the hitting is an integral part of the sport, hockey is SO much more than that. You should watch "The Beauty Of Hockey" for a look at more parts of the game. It'll hype you up just as much as this video did, and give you some appreciation for the skill level of the players on the ice - even the ones that dish out some of the hits you just watched.

Based on your comments you will love hockey. I also suggest watching The Code so you can understand the game inside the game. There is always a reason for a fight and there are rules players understand from growing up in the community. Nihn's The Code will help get you up to speed on that and also help understand the respect that exists between players. Greatest sport on earth, hope you continue to enjoy it!

The general rules for hitting in hockey: don't hit somebody not immediately involved in the play, don't hit from behind (especially around the glass), don't hit above the shoulders or below the knees, don't use the stick as a weapon, don't lead with the elbow, don't accelerate into the hit more than necessary, and don't mess with the goalie. That's about it. Penalties fall into a few different categories: - Minor: 2 minutes in the penalty box (with your team down a player for that time). If the opponent scores while they have a numerical advantage on the ice (referred to as being on a "power play"), the minor penalty ends early. If your team is serving two minor penalties at the time, only the first one ends. The vast majority of penalties are minor. - Double minor: 4 minutes, essentially two minors back-to-back. If the opponents score in the first two minutes, the penalty clock is reset to 2 minutes and the second minor begins. A double minor can be given for multiple infractions in quick succession, but the most common way to get a double minor is a high stick that draws blood. - Major: 5 minutes, and you must serve it in full no matter how many goals the other team scores. Almost any foul can be upgraded to a major if warranted (this is especially common for "boarding", a violent hit from behind into the boards), but fighting and a few inherently dangerous fouls such as kneeing, spearing (jabbing the blade of your stick at another player), or slew-footing (kicking someone's foot out from under them with your skate) are always major. - Misconduct: 10 minutes, but your team is not short-handed as a result. Rarely given on its own (although it can be if you mouth off to the ref too much), it's usually a "2-and-10" combo with a minor penalty (in which case a teammate will serve the minor but you have to sit out the full 10) to give time for tempers to cool or to provide extra punishment for persistent fouls. - Game misconduct: Ejection, but your team is not short-handed as a result. This is almost always a "5-and-game" combo with a major; in fact, almost all majors (fighting being the biggest exception) include an automatic game misconduct. - Match penalty: Reserved for extremely serious fouls, usually intent to injure or a particularly reckless foul that does result in injury. Basically equivalent to a major + game misconduct + automatic suspension pending a disciplinary hearing. - Penalty shot: Given when a player is fouled from behind on a breakaway, or for certain infractions in the crease (the blue painted area in front of the net). If the foul would have been a minor, the penalty shot is given instead of the minor; majors or misconducts are still applied in addition to the penalty shot.

So, I’ll explain some of the hitting rules. You can’t hit someone from behind headfirst into the boards, that’s a boarding penalty. When you hit someone, they must either have possession or just had possession of the puck. If you blow someone up who’s nowhere near the puck, that’s an interference penalty. And if you hit someone too high, like if you elbow someone in the head, you’re gonna get a roughing penalty.
@SamuellJoubert

When the referee with the orage band lift his arms in the air like at 3:24 it means that you will have a penalty or like you call it a foul. The opposite team will then have usually 2 minutes to attack with one more player (5 v 4 instead of 5 v 5)

Hits from behind and hits to the head "as the primary point of contact" are fouls in hockey. You can ONLY hit if they have the puck, otherwise you risk an interference penalty (If they just passed a half second ago you're good, but leave it too long and it's a late hit penalty, essentially interference). Penalties are 2 or 5 minutes in the penalty box, your team will have to play shorthanded until you are released. On a 2 minute you sit for 2, or until the other team scores. For a 5 minute major penalty, you sit the whole 5 no matter how many times the opposition manages to score.

Many of these hits were illegal and probably penalized. But it is the most physical sport, not to mention the fastest. The fastest NFL players reach around 24 mph in comparison to NHL players being well over 30 mph. And don't forget that they are doing it on a steel blade about 1/4 of an inch wide. The skill and talent and coordination of these players is unbelievable. Take a little time to learn about the game and I promise you will be even more impressed and shocked.
