I was lucky: my first trip around the rock was with a guide, who had all of the necessary other gear. I was entrusted with the rod and lure. Not to be a smart a$$ but before your next trip, sit - in the kayak or on a stool, and mentally go through everything you need to do to set up once out on the water; where you want your gear, and what you can do to make it more accessible. Loose in the boat could put it on the bottom of the ocean, so putting it in the forward hatch was smart. but getting it organized will make your trip a lot more fun. Tight lines! And nice fish!
Im experienced on lake whitecapes, going to try salt soon. I use a 45 lb thrust motor so i can fight some rough currants which is nice! I guess a drysuit is necessary here in Oregon so im working on that. Im looking for access to launch easily and people to go with. I'm near Florence. Your Hobie is awesome.
@pnwkayak Black rockfish are abundant close in with some others types. 40 fathom Longleader does well, but can't go that far out of course. It would definitely be great to go out with a few kayaks for safety.
Fun video. I live just outside of Newport and just got me a fishing Kayak. What types of lures are you using? I might have to take a trip to Pacific City. I hear Depot bay is also good for rock fish from a kayak. - Lance
I use the gulp minnows (4 in) and a light jig head with some .25oz lead just to help it get to the bottom. It costs so much less than other options so I'm not as mad when I lose one. I hear Depot is awesome but haven't tried just yet.
