Thoughts on getting a used Pocket 2 creator kit for $200 vs spending $500 more for a pocket 3 (and apparently waiting a few months). First camera like this, just want to create videos. 😀
The Pocket 2 is still a fine camera, especially with the wireless mic you get in the Creator Combo, and $200 sounds very reasonable to give it a try. Its main drawback for me was always the tiny screen, which is really only useful for making sure your subject is somewhere in the frame. For trying to actually compose a good shot you're better off using the MIMO app on a smartphone. But he combination of small size, excellent stabilization, and good image quality was always a winner to me, and still would be at that price. The one word of caution I'd have is that none of the Pocket cams are designed for the user to swap the built-in battery, so you likely won't get the advertised battery life from a several-year-old device. Have a USB power bank handy to keep it charged up between uses and that shouldn't be a problem, hopefully.
Oh, and be careful with the wireless mic--I lost my first one along a trail, and I'd had a few close calls before that where it fell off but I was able to find it. These days I attach a little lanyard/wrist strap to it, and loop that around whatever strap I'm attaching it to as an extra precaution. On the Pocket 2's wireless mic, the deadcat can also get knocked off fairly easily, so be careful there as well--but luckily those are much cheaper to replace!
Thanks for the video. It might make me pull the trigger on a pocket 3. Been using a sport 2 and GoPro. As an aside, any thoughts on the Canon RF 200-800? On the waiting list and wonder if you are too? 😀
Thanks for watching, glad you liked! I always liked my Pocket 2, but like I said, the 3 really takes it up a notch and addresses the few major drawbacks of the 2. I think action cameras like the GoPro and DJI Action series have their place too, but for this sort of content, I just think a mechanical gimbal is better than digital stabilization, and adds the ability to seamlessly flip from selfie to looking out and vice-versa (as long as you leave that silly Selfie Flip option off, anyway!). I had actually pre-ordered the 200-800mm.. and then changed my mind and canceled the order. I have 700mm f/10 with the 100-500mm + 1.4x teleconverter, and I have the 800mm f/11, so after thinking hard I decided 800mm f/9 wasn't really a gap I urgently need to fill. I might change my mind again once I start seeing more review videos! But for now the lens I really want, and which truly would fill a gap, is the new 10-20mm f/4L. Definitely planning to order that one ASAP.
@@wanderland_xyz Right there on the 10-20. Have been doing more bird photography than anything. Contemplating on selling the 800 f11 to offset the cost of the 200-800. I’m still suffering sticker shock from the 28-70 f2 I picked up about 6 months ago. 😀
Yeah, RF glass in general isn't cheap, but I've yet to find a bad one in the bunch! I hear you on the 28-70mm, though. Looks like an AMAZING lens, I just can't justify it these days. If I were still doing portrait and wedding work, I'd definitely consider it a necessity! My plan was also to sell the 800mm and put that towards the 200-800mm. May still end up selling it anyway--I like the results I get with the 100-500mm, with and without the TC. That is just such a fantastic lens, and at a size I don't mind hauling around, you know?
Very interesting. I’d always assumed that you film yourself on a mobile phone so it was good to see how you actually do it. I really don’t think i’d be able to handhold both the video camera and the R7 whilst taking photos 😅 This has now 100% assured me that I really do need the 24-105L lens.
Believe me, the dual-wielding was only possible in short stretches and by the grace of Image Stabilization. ;) I ordered an adapter so I can clip the Pocket 3 to my strap, should make it much easier next time around. Were those bits useful at all anyway? I like it when other RU-vid photographers show their shooting process and talk through what they're seeing in the composition, so I'd like to do more of that instead of just throwing up a shot, you know? And yes, for the size and weight (and price), I really love the 24-105mm. I'm keeping my 24-70mm f/2.8L for the extra bit of sharpness and stop of light when I need it, but as a versatile travel lens the 24-105mm is fantastic. Next on my list will be the 10-20mm f.4L, which I intend to order ASAP! I expect that will replace my 14-35mm f/4L.
@@wanderland_xyz Just received my RF 24-105L F4 lens. I purchased it this week as Canon are currently offering double cashback for Black Friday in the UK in addition to the Lens Reward it was already offering. It will be the perfect companion to my 14-35L F4 😊
@@666JGNotts Just in time for the winter doldrums! :) You're going to love that one, though. Still very often my go-to lens when I want versatility and light weight!
@@wanderland_xyz Indeed! I managed 20 minutes out in the garden with it just to make sure there was nothing major wrong with it but it's been raining or very dull since then. There should be some Winter sun tomorrow and it will be feeling quite cold so I'm hoping for a chance to give it a proper test. There are far fewer subject though at this time of year. First impressions - it feels very nice and vert fast focussing so looking good :)
