The late great Terry Kath

Terry Kath, yes a beast. The whole band was world-class. Even Jimi Hendrix thought so. He loved Chicago and they would have joined forces if he had lived - "Their guitar player..he's better than me."

That incredible guitarist is the late great Terry Kath. Go dig up their debut album when they were known as The Chicago Transit Authority and play these two tracks: "Introduction" and "Poem 58". Guitar player Terry Kath wrote "Introduction" and sang lead vocals. He was called "The White Ray Charles" by his bandmates. Soulful baritone voice! "Poem 58" is nine minutes of PURE FUNK led by Terry Kath on guitar, Danny Seraphine on drums, and Peter Cetera on bass. Kath's guitar will have you needing an ice pack for your jaw after you pick it up from the floor! When they were "The Chicago Transit Authority", they were the house band at the Whisky a Go Go in LA. One night between sets, Jimi Hendrix, who was in the audience, went to their dressing room after catching their first set. He walked up to their sax player Walt Parazaider and said, "You guys have a horn section that sounds like one set of lungs and A GUITAR PLAYER THAT'S BETTER THAN ME! You wanna go on the road?" They said "YEAH!". And that's how they became Hendrix's opening act on a national arena tour.

He’d been up all night, because he had writer’s block, but knew the album needed one more song. Hence, “Searching for something to say.”

Almost no one knows what he meant. There was a reason he was up late this night: LSD-25. So, the choice was do more acid, or sleep 6am until 4pm. This other explanation doesn't add up mathematically, but now you know the truth.

Tanglewood is the super famous venue where the Boston Symphony Orchestra gives sold out performances. It has been around for a long time. Tanglewood is a music venue and festival in the towns of Lenox and Stockbridge in the Berkshire Hills of western Massachusetts. It has been the summer home of the Boston Symphony Orchestra since 1937. Tanglewood is also home to three music schools: the Tanglewood Music Center, Tanglewood Learning Center, and the Boston University Tanglewood Institute. Besides classical music, Tanglewood hosts the Festival of Contemporary Music, jazz and popular artists, concerts, and frequent appearances by James Taylor, John Williams, and the Boston Pops.

You hear people talk about a band being "tight", well these guys were SO tight that Terry could start strumming his axe perfectly timed to when the others would finish getting set up and come in with him right on time, in sync, not breaking rhythm with each other, gliding into the song as smoothly as an Olympic ski jumper sliding down the ramp to the gold medal flight.

You should listen to the studio recording of this song. Live versions can never duplicate the mix done in the studio and that's the way we heard it on the radio in 1970. This song was recorded in August for the self titled album "Chicago". The album was released in January 1970 and this song was released as a single in June1970. This live version is inferior to the studio recording. The band is from Chicago and was originally known as 'Chicago Transit Authority'. The CTA is the name of the mass transit system of Chicago, IL. They threatened to legal action if the band didn't cease and desist using that name, so they shortened it to 'Chicago'. The name of their debut double album is Chicago Transit Authority, recorded January 27-30, 1969 and released April 28, 1969 on the Columbia Records label. It didn't do well at first but fortunately, this during the advent of FM radio and eventually it sold 2 million copies on its initial pressing. The impact of FM radio can not be understated, it is what was directly responsible for the explosion of album sales and relegated the 45 rpm disc to a marketing tool to initiate /invigorate album sales. This was the beginning of the Golden Age of the music business.

Jimi Hendrix told Chicago's publicist that Terry was a better guitar player than he was. They actually had plans to do shows together. --- When Chicago made the studio album with this song on it, Cetera's jaw had been broken and he had to sing it through clenched teeth because his jaws were wired shut.

well it's a bit of trivia people dont know about but the singer-bassist had jaw medical issues and he had to work hard to be able to sing ... the AI didnt even know it at first but : " You are absolutely right. Peter Cetera did indeed suffer a broken jaw in three places after being attacked by a group of Marines at Dodger Stadium in 1969. He had his jaw wired shut for a period of time, which did affect his singing style. There are several accounts of Cetera recording with his jaw wired shut, including those from producer James William Guercio and horn player Lee Loughnane. However, it's important to note that these are personal recollections, and the exact details of the recording sessions may vary depending on who is recounting the story. Cetera himself has said in interviews that the incident made him self-conscious about opening his mouth wide when singing, which contributed to his unique vocal style."
