9 year 2 month old Angelina created a great arrangement (seen working on it at the beginning of the video) then took charge of the studio and the band to deliver my favorite cover of this 1956 Jay Hawkins classic. Angelina's sharp inflections are like daggers being hurled at you. Her sassy, emotional performance has left many reactors exhausted, befuddled and/or speechless. As talented as Angelina is, she is an even better human being, humble and filled with empathy. Please take the time to read the biography I compiled for my all time favorite musical artist. Born Angelina Jordan Astar on January 10, 2006 in Oslo, Norway to her Norwegian mother, Sara Astar and her Swedish father, Gerry Christian Slattman, who has chosen to keep his life private. Angelina started singing around 18 months of age after listening to Whitney Houston on RU-vid. She quickly became obsessed with listening to music videos and her maternal grandmother, Mery Zamani got Angelina interested in classic jazz. Mery Zamani is Iranian and was considered a prodigy as an artist and poet and married a Japanese man who passed away in 2019. Angelina speaks Norwegian, Farsi, English, Japanese and Swedish. Angelina attended the Oslo Waldorf School and participated in the Oslo School of Music and Performing Arts after-school program, where she received vocal training starting around age 4. Angelina plays the piano, violin, guitar and flute and also paints. More recently she along with her grandmother have designed and made the clothing she wears on stage. Why Angelina always performs barefoot At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. At age 9, she became the youngest published author in Norway’s history by writing a book about this encounter in the Middle East. Angelina at age 6 and 7 did record a few songs in a recording studio, most notably “I Who Have Nothing”, a truly remarkable performance for a 6 or 7 year old. Angelina is blessed with a deep voice with a beautiful rich tone and has always made her sound much older than her age. Many compare her voice to that of Amy Winehouse. Her voice is highly emotional which is very rare for a young girl and some people can’t accept that such a soulful voice can come from someone who has not had enough life experience. One vocal coach on RU-vid recently said, “If you have a song and want to have more emotion added to that song, have Angelina sing it.” At age 8, (please refer to replies by erik to a comment I made on JHTreacts video on 6/7/21 who provides proof Angelina had already turned 8) Angelina’s audition on NGT was a cover of Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday”, a song which was banned by a number of European countries during World War II because authorities worried the song would increase the suicide rate. Truly bizarre that this is the song to launch the career of a child musical prodigy. One of the judges on NGT cried. The next performance on NGT was her cover of Billie Holiday’s “I’m a Fool to Want You” singing acapella which was required by NGT unless the singer also played an instrument while singing. This was the Judge’s cut round of the competition and was not performed in front of an audience. In the Semi Final round of NGT, Angelina sang “Bang Bang” which was written by Sonny Bono and was first performed by his wife Cher but is best known sung by Nancy Sinatra. The improvement in each performance is incredible even though there were only a couple months between them. In the Finals, Angelina did a cover of George Gershwin’s, “Summertime” and won the contest, capturing 46% of the votes from the ten finalists. Angelina had become a star in her native Norway and her videos on RU-vid went viral. She gave a few concerts during the summer of 2014 while 8 years old. On June 27, 2018 Jordan performed “Fly Me to the Moon” for Quincy Jones in The O2 Arena in London. Angelina performed on America’s Got Talent The Champions which aired in January 2020. She earned the Golden Buzzer for her performance of her unique arrangement of Queen’s Bohemian Rhapsody. Angelina began singing at the age of 1 1/2. She listened to the greats of Jazz, her favorite being Billie Holiday, also Ella Fitzgerald, Dinah Washington, Sinatra, and Etta James among others. She taught herself and begged her mom to let her enter competitions. Her parents never pushed her, but stressed the importance of her education first. Mom finally relented when she was 7, and entered into Norway’s Got Talent, which she won singing Jazz covers. She arranges all of her songs. Angelina says that she never gets nervous, she loves to sing.

So Angelina was 7 years old when she won Norway’s got talent in 2014. She was nine years old when she recorded I PUT A SPELL ON YOU. I fell hopelessly and completely in love with this angel, the very first time I heard her, which was on AGT at 13. Doing Bohemian Rhapsody, by Queen. Truly amazing. She reminds me of the late Eva Cassidy, in the way she covers the well known songs. You would know the title, and think I know how this will sound, and then your jaw hits the ground when she does the song. She does it her way, and makes it like a brand new song, heard for the first time. This girl will go places, if producers don't try to tell her what they want, but let her do her thing. As far as I am concerned, she is number one over ANY singer known today.

This was her production. The paper she handed the band manager at the beginning were her 'requests' for changes she wanted the individual band members to make. You may think this an exaggeration but listen to a few more of her many performances (135+ covers plus original songs - all on YT) and you will see! She has been performing at a high level all over the world since age 8 when she won Norway's Got Talent singing Billie Holiday , Nancy Sinatra , and Gershwin. It is the rare singer that can, as Angelina has done, go from Queen to "Screamin" Jay Hawkins to Adele to Elvis to Whitney Houston to Etta James to Amy Winehouse (and many others in between) and do them all justice! "I Put a Spell On You" has been covered many times and is recognized as a classic, yet almost never is the tone of the original 1956 "Screamin" Jay Hawkins version captured. This is because Hawkins was the original shock rock guy (think Ozzy Osbourne type craziness) and his style is difficult to emulate and also because his dated delivery is uncomfortable and stereotypical to our modern sensibilities. Yet Angelina respectfully sings his own song in a manner that exceeds his (Hawkin's image is on the candle she holds at the start of her video). She starts low, rising in intensity throughout and finishes in an unexpected and practically operatic style. You must go and listen to Hawkins' original (and throw in a couple of "famous" covers as well) to see the true genius in how AJ incorporates many of his vocal elements [usually omitted by most singers]. Wow. For a first hearing of Angelina, your comments were spot on. She is truly an amazing singer, called the girl with 1,000 voices. You heard an extreme one today because Angelina, even at 9, was re-creating a style authentically. Her biggest influence has been Billie Holiday, so you were right about that 40’s vibe. But Angelina, now 15, covers jazz, blues, ballads, soul, pop, r&b, and other genres like they are all in her sweet spot. She is, without question, the best singer I’ve ever heard. In my (and most of the viewers) opinion, she is a generational talent, probably the best singer born in the 2000s (And many of us are older than most reactors). This is the "Screamin'" Joe Hawken's arrangement he recorded while drunk. (No, not kidding.) He didn't even remember recording it. To get to Angelina, we are talking some deep jazz roots; torch songs if you will. Back to Julie London and alike. She is not competing with anyone alive; she is channeling their sound. As a young performer, it's easier to mimic a proven sound than come up with your own, especially in such a monotone age as we live in. She is amazing because she has figured out the secret sauce and has the innate talent to pull it off.

Angelina Jordan is a music prodigy she started singing at age of 1.5 years and more than that she started with Billy Holiday Jazz. Angelina speaks 3 languages, designs her own clothes, and has written a very popular book called "Mellom to hjerter" (Between Two Hearts) a story about why she wears no shoes during her performances, and like her name she truly is an angel with a heart of gold. Samantha, went I first listen to Angelina's sing "Put a Spell on You" I couldn't believe the voice coming out of this little girl. She put a spell on me from that moment on over 4 years ago! I fell into the Angelina "Rabbit Hole" following her musical journey from a 7 yr old girl with Big hair and missing teeth to a beautiful teenage young Lady.

She chose this song as a tribute to the original singer, whose picture is shown on the candle in the beginning and the papers she handed to the band leader were her last-minute changes for him. The band may have gone in that day and been taken aback by playing for a nine-year-old, but by the end of the day they were calling her, "The Boss." This performance is not typical of Angelina but shows that she can perform in any genre, although she prefers jazz. She always performs barefoot and there is an interesting story behind that. You might want to check out a recent song Angelina wrote called Million Miles. She wrote it in memory of her grandfather who died in 2019. It’s a beautiful song and you will see how the 6 foot plus Angelina has grown. I recommend the live in studio version of it.

According to her, she began singing at the ripe age of 1 and a half years old. At about 4 or 5 years old, she began begging her parents, to let her try out for "Simon's show", as she put. They finally relented, and allowed her to try out for Norway's Got Talent. As she has stated many times; She won Norway's Got Talent at 7 years old, with songs like "Summertime" and "Gloomy Sunday". At the end of the final, it was announced that she had garnered 46% of the vote total, with the other nine finalists combining for the remaining 54%. It wasn't even close. Angelina always performs barefoot, as a reminder of the millions of impoverished children in the world, This began one day, on the way to a performance. She found herself talking to a similarly aged little girl on the street, weighing people for bits of change, and noticed she was barefoot. She asked, and her mom explained the less fortunate. Moments later, Angelina gave her new little friend, the shoes she had been wearing, and they embraced. It's my understanding, that they still stay in touch. Angelina has already raised millions for various children's charities. Angelina does all of her own arrangements, writes, composes, sews and designs most of the frocks she performs in. 😉😊✌

Yes, she has confidence. And she has been singing since she was 4 y. o. She has had the best support she ever could have. Her grandmother is a famous jazz singer and her parents are musicians and are involved in the music industry.
