Yeeey! EXO-CBX is my favorite subunit! When there's no Kai around I can totally enjoy Baekhyun's dancing and performing skills! (Kai's my ult, Baekhyun's right after him) and Xiumin's rap! Their songs are so beautiful, their MVs are a totally different vibe, but so bright and beautiful!

EXO Ladder Season 1 was just CBX 3 members touring Japan, that's the start of EXO Ladder series.

CBX, my other Ult group along with EXO! 🥰 CBX is the funky, fun and flirty subunit of EXO! They have a total of 4 albums - 3 mini albums and 1 full-length album, 2 in Korean and 2 in Japanese and a handful of OSTs too. Considering that this subunit consists of 2 of the main vocalists, they actually don't have that many ballady type songs. Hey Mama! was their debut song back in 2016. The MV is inspired by the movie "Kingsman: The Secret Service" The One! Give it up for Suho as the cameo king! As you can see, "The One" started off as a VCR from EXO's EXO Planet 3: EXO'rDIUM tour in 2016, this was before CBX was even a thing. The VCR was titled "Reservoir Idols" and each of the boys had a special nickname - Chen was "Thunder Boy", Baekhyun was "Black Light" and Xiumin was "Mad Ice". After the debut of CBX in October, the VCR was released as a special video and it was the other song they performed on music shows alongside "Hey Mama!" The choreo is actually really fun and silly, they totally intentionally rip off EXO choreo! The boys just have such fun with it and I really love to see it! Baekhyun makes a pretty girl, huh? 🤭 She's fondly called "Baekhee". Baekhyun promised to release a picture of him dressed as Baekhee if CBX won first place for "Hey Mama!" - Well, they did win and he did keep his promise... for all of 5 minutes, then he deleted it! 😄 Luckily EXO-L are fast and they saved it, so you can find it online everywhere! Crush U was for a video game, so that's why the MV was so random! It's such a fun song though, I love their OST's!

I do adore the versatility of the sub-units (and it is something SM does a lot: Girls Generation, Super Junior, EXO, NCT even more so). Not only is it a perfect way to capitalise on the talent the company has already developed, it also gives a greater level of artistic possibility to the artists, a chance to show different sides of themselves. You are absolutely correct that each sub-unit has its own unique vibe. I adore the vocals and style of CBX and the humour and storytelling that comes through every one of their MVs etc. The way they play off each other is just adorable and its a really special mix. And so is EXO-SC! They have such a great sound and you can feel Chanyeol and Sehun's styles shining through as well as giving them more opportunities to write and produce. All of them are so incredibly versatile and I think the best way to be happy artistically for a long career is to be able to push yourself and try new things and sub-units (as well as solo work) are a great way to do that while also continuing to create with your main group,. PS. Baekhyun bias and Sehun as wrecker? That's how I began too! Bias no longer has as much meaning for me now (much, I mean, Baekhyun is still .... my absolute Ult weakness in all of kpop ;) but that was who first pulled me in as an EXO-L xx

CBX are such a fun subunit and you can tell the three of them have a lot of fun together. If you want to see more of them together in a regular everyday setting, EXO ladder season 1 is just the 3 of them in Japan and they're very cute together. I'm really glad the first three videos got to show you different facets of this group. We went from fun dance party tune, to goofballs in the club banger to more serious end of the night rave closer... that's a fun ride to me lol You two might not remember all the way back but during EXO Arcade Season 1, you already heard a bit of "Hey Mama" when the team of Xiumin, Baek, Chen and Chanyeol basically spanked Team B's little booties during the question round part in episode 3 lmao They played a snippet of "Hey MAMA" and showed them hamming it up and doing a little of the choreo for it including Chanyeol who used to love to tease Chen that he himself was the 'C' in CBX not Chen and in many instances dancing CBX dance moves in Chen's face 😂 Chen's reaction was always too cute. Years later when EXO (consisting of just Suho, Baek, Chanyeol, Chen, Kai and Sehun because Xiumin and D.O were in the military) were on tour, Chen admitted on stage that he was envious of EXO-SC and wanted to be in a showcase like theirs and Chanyeol proposed they become EXO-CSC, which then set Baek off with him telling Chen he's in ChenBaekXi, finally Kai states he wants in too and proposes EXO-CBSCK lmao Poor Suho being left out again Whether they're singing fast or slow songs, I always enjoy CBX's vibe, music videos and performances. I feel the same about EXO-SC as well. Both subunits are different but equally as good and fun to me. I'm hoping they form even more EXO subunits one day lol Tammy, I appreciate your attempts to keep your glasses on but I think it might be a losing battle when it comes to Baek and your other biases LOL I agree with Beth, 'The One' definitely gives off 'Night At The Roxbury' which makes it even funnier to me. Yes, the guy EXO-CBX keep picking on in their "The One" MV is Suho, that's why it's extra funny. LOL And the girl is played by Baekhyun, that's why Baekhyun is so repulsed and shocked when he goes to hit on her. The cat that you see in EXO-CBX's "Crush U" MV is also thought to be an important part of EXO's storyline. At different times a cat is thought to represent EXO-Ls or the heart of the Tree of Life. Remember how the cat represented EXO's fans in EXO's "Power" MV? And you see Chen holding a white cat in EXO-CBX's "Blooming Day" MV. In their "Crush U" MV, the cat is thought could possibly be the spirit of the heart of the Tree of Life. Cats also often have a place of honor and respect in a lot of monarchies and cultures throughout history. And EXO has been sent to Earth by a leader that they referred to as "Your Majesty," which we hear in "Mama." So it makes sense that the cat would have a place of honor in EXO's story, whether it represents us fans or the Tree of Life. Fun fact: CBX recorded the remake of "Crush U" with songwriter and composer YoonSang for the soundtrack of the multi-player game Blade & Soul.

As with everything EXO does, including their solo work and sub-units, the stories in their MVs are all connected to EXO's larger storyline. So, the story in EXO-CBX's "Hey Mama" MV is telling another piece of EXO's story. In "Hey Mama," the widely accepted theory is that the Red Force has infiltrated the news media and they are controlling humanity through the news that is being broadcast on TV. The members of CBX have gone undercover to try and stop the Red Force. If you pay attention to how the people act when red colored objects are being used you will see that they act like they are in a trance or being controlled by something. For instance, the paper the newscaster reads from is red and the drinks the people are drinking in the conference room are red. And, if you notice, everyone, including CBX, is acting like robots or zombies -- as if they are in an trance -- when red is involved. But as soon as Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin get rid of the red paper and the red drinks, etc. the people start to come to life and act more normal. There is a lot more to this video, but that's just a small part of it. But one of the easiest, and most central, themes in all of EXO's MVs and everything they do, is the use of red. When you see the color red or red light this is used to symbolize something to do with the Red Force and it often shows how the Red Force is the ones that are in control of whatever is covered in red at that moment. As you can see, not only is EXO's story based on fantasy and sci-fi concepts, but it is partially based on real societal issues and events and topics that SM wants to shine a light on. When you really think about it, a lot of EXO's story is a social commentary on the problems and issues that we as humans are dealing with in real life -- such as environmental issues, war, technology, media (LOL "fake news"), etc. Also pay attention to the use of flowers when it comes to EXO. In this MV you see Baekhyun dropping flower petals down on Chen and they collect bunches of flowers and you see them burning them in the fire, etc. Although we are not positive what the real effect flowers have in EXO's story yet, in "Hey Mama" it seems as though the flowers help to bring them out of the trance that the Red Force is trying to trap them in. You will see instances of EXO using flowers in all different ways across a majority of their MVs and it's all tied to their storyline. If you want to see how the story continues, if you haven't already, you should check out EXO-CBX's Japanese song, "Horololo." I think the story in "Hey Mama" is connected to the story in "Horololo." In "Horololo" many people think that CBX are private investigators or detectives, and I agree, that could be their job. However, I like to think maybe they are investigative journalists, which would help explain how "Hey Mama" and "Horololo" are intertwined. Journalists have a lot of similarities to private detectives, especially during the 1950s, '60s. '70s '80s era, which both "Hey Mama" and "Horololo" MVs seem to be themed around.This also makes sense if you subscribe to the theory that there are alternate dimensions and maybe the members of EXO are even traveling through different time periods throughout history, etc. If you really pay attention, you can see how everything the members do is connected. The difficult thing is that almost nothing is in chronological order so in order to piece it together we fans have to become detectives and pay attention to even the most minute of details. As you can see, EXO-CBX is a sub-unit of EXO, made up of 3 of EXO's main/lead vocalists -- Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin, hence the name CBX. (Xiumin has always been known as a lead rapper in EXO-M, so yes, CBX allows him to show off his rap skills. But Baekhyun -- and sometimes Chen -- also becomes a rapper when they are a member of CBX, which is different than what we normally get to hear from them as a member of EXO.) This sub-unit was created because at the time Chen, Baekhyun and Xiumin were the only members who didn't have any side projects. They were all in the gym working out together discussing what they should do while everyone else was working on other things, and their trainer suggested they form a sub-unit. So they took the idea to the company and SM agreed that they would make a good unit. Plus, CBX gives SM a chance to bring EXO more fully into the Japanese market. CBX focuses on the Korean and Japanese music industry. CBX releases Japanese songs and albums. They are one of SM's most popular sub-units and they are so popular that they have held their own concert tour with just their sub-unit. Also, fun fact: Did you notice how they had 6 backup dancers? With CBX there are always 6 backup dancers because 9 is a good number when it comes to formations in choreography, but fans think it's also supposed to mirror the fact that as members of EXO, even as a sub-unit they are still part of the main group. EXO's main group has 9 members so, the 6 backup dancers are supposed to be a visual representation of the rest of the members of EXO. EXO-CBX was EXO's first sub-sub-unit and some think that SM wanted to create a way to make it clear that just because they are a sub-unit doesn't mean that they aren't still connected to everything that makes them EXO.

It's funny how you guys talk about smart marketing in the sense that hearing music from a solo album or a subunit's album can pull someone into the whole group. That's basically how my kpop journey started and coincidentally, it started with Exo CBX! I was into kdramas but had no clue about kpop when I watched Scarlet Heart Ryeo, which Baekhyun also starred in, and I fell in love with one of the OST which was For You by Exo CBX. And naturally, after hearing that song I had to check out Exo and fell into the rabbit hole that is kopop, haha.

I’m so glad you all had The One in this CBX mix.This subunit brings me so much joy. I was laughing so hard the first time I ever saw this and was so distracted by their dorkiness that I missed Suho’s cameo appearances. So funny, their clothes, teasing Suho, Baekhyun! I can’t with them. They did a VLive countdown before their release that (EXO-CBX(첸백시) HOT DEBUT! COUNTDOWN X LieV) that honestly I almost didn’t survive lol. I love how Xiumin shines in CBX as well as how much I love Sehun in EXO-SC. I’m excited you all are jumping around a bit.

Since you like CBX, I'd suggest you check out "Blooming Day", "Horololo", and maybe "Ka-CHING" next. And make sure don't miss the "Blooming Day" dance practice. So, during EXO's EXO Planet #3: The EXO'rDIUM tour the "The One" clip was played as a secret teaser of sorts for CBX. Though, because of the previously unheard song, fans thought maybe it might be a subunit~^.^ (There was also another VCR that we thought might be a teaser for a subunit, too, especially after CBX was announced, but that hasn't exactly happened... sorta~) ANYWAYS! So, when the clip was originally played at the concerts it was slightly different^.^ There was originally text introducing the guys as "Reservoir Idols" and the members with nicknames that were nods to their powers: Baekhyun = Black Light Xiumin = Mad Ice Chen = Thunder Boy The guys had considered instead of CBX going by LIT, standing for their powers Light.Ice.Thunder, but scrapped it. Probably because the name might've been difficult for some fans, especially Korean fans, to say? It would've also made the naming pattern for following subunits difficult/not work [for example: Chanyeol and Sehun would've been Fire.Wind/Wind.Fire(FW or WF)-.-] So, they decided on CBX, but it's also said as "ChenBaekXi" by the boys and fans~ I also find it funny cause there's always a moment when people get into EXO when they want to say E.X.O, and EXO-Ls have to correct them. So people's brains glitch when we then tell them about the subunits and that those are acceptably called C.B.X or S.C^.^ 7:22 You're actually right about this! In addition to what I said previously about The One being a VCR/teaser first, there was a song they did where they were not known officially as a subunit yet! They released an OST for the drama Moon Lovers: Scarlet Heart Ryeo that Baekhyun was in with the song called For You~~~ Hey MAMA came shortly after^.^ P.S. CBX is known as the underrated dancer line in EXO, which is great considering: Xiumin just doesn't get enough recognition for any of his skills since day one~ & Baekhyun and Chen had no formal dance training before joining SM (with only about half a year training before debut). At the time of debut, Chen was known as one of the worst dancers in EXO, but he really worked his butt off around 2015, focusing hard on dancing~~~ Baekhyun had been always steadily improving through the years, but he really focused on it in 2016. And with CBX's music really being towards fun, dancing is a must^.^

Oh and a couple things I forgot: The white sock look is not something I like in every day life but for some stage performance I think it's genius (like when Michael Jackson would purposefully use it). The contrast draws your attention to the feet and the footwork of the dance. It's like adding little moving dots of focus to the ankle so your eyes notice what the feet are doing. Did you notice how much of the "boring automated office with official news broadcast" in Hey Mama MV was decorated with red? Red Force as the entity they are against is still there even in CBX's debut :) And Suho plays all the hardworking characters CBX misunderstands and give a hard time to while they are intentionally dressed at unemployed dorks who think they are the bees knees... Nobody does playful and silly better than CBX but don't let your guard down cause then they will turn around and rip your heart out with songs like Paper Cuts.... ETA: the first season of EXO Ladder (their reality show) was CBX travelling together

Ka-CHING in live is VERY my favorite, check thissss, you will like it a lot .. ( BLOOMING DAYS is perfect level "I won't even comment", just check her dance practice)
