This song came out shortly after my first husband passed away, I could have missed the pain but I wouldn't have our daughter, my daughter is my Dance. I saw Garth in 2016, had a sign that said my daughter is my Dance, while Garth sang "The Dance" he read my sign, pointed at me, held his hands up in the air like he was holding a sign, then put his hands on his heart for me. Best experience at a concert EVER!!

"The Dance" is a metaphor for life. "The Pain" are all of the struggles a person has while "Dancing". You probably would've understood that if you had watched the amazingly touching video that Garth put with this.

The official video starts out with Garth saying that he's heard many different ideas as to what this song means. He lists a few short ones that he has read. He agrees that many people will find different meanings. Then he gives his meaning of the song right before the song and video begin. As I stated, the video is very touching, although it mostly consists of deceased people that meant a lot to Garth, and most should have a lot of meaning to everyone.

As hard as the loss hits, I would NEVER give up the time we had together. She made me a stronger, better man and gave me the sweetest memories. You should also react to Skylark, "Wildflower". It is close to the story of her life and was played at her service.

This is Garth Brooks personal favorite song. He ends every concert he does with it. Its nearly his most popular but still quite a ways off from the popularity of Friends in Low Places. Two facts I love to point out. 1.) Garth would tell venues to NOT sell tickets to the front row. Especially if the venue charged seat pricing as most do instead of flat admission. They would agree because.....hes Garth effing Brooks..... then at the beginning of the show, he would tell all the people in the back row to come fill the front row. 2) He did 9 concerts in 9 m nights in Kansas City. This after not touring for over a decade as his kids grew up. To raise donations for wildfires that were insane that year. He sold out all 9 concerts with 10s of thousands of attendees....AND tickets to movie theaters broadcasting it live all over the country on the final night, in under 30 FRIGGIN MINUTES. Nobody concerts like Garth......nobody.

I know you said you aren't a fan of country, but perhaps you should check out Gary Allan. I would recommend "Best I Ever Had", which is a cover of Vertical Horizon's version which isn't country, and then "Every Storm (Runs Out Of Rain)", "Life Ain't Always Beautiful" and lastly, because I kinda think you might like it, "Smoke Rings In The Dark". Gary also did covers of Del Shannon's "Runaway" and Tom Petty's "Breakdown" that is pretty incredible.

This song has touched so many people so deeply. You should watch one of the live versions from when he did his UK tour. He would go out and sit in the middle of the audience, and they would sing the song with him. It's amazing. On a personal note, I usually don't share like this on social media, but I feel like someone needs to hear this. This song came out when my son was only a few years old. When he was 4 he got Rocky mountain spotted fever. We came very close to losing him. Life flight to children's, having to resuscitate him several times, five weeks in the hospital, wide spread brain damage. Well fair to say there is far more but you get how dire it was. We made it through. His life after was never easy. He struggled in school and life, but never quit. At age 12 he found music. He learned to play the Bass guitar, along with 9 other instruments, he learned poetry and won contests, he earned his black belt in taekwondo, and he earned his eagle scout. After highschool he toured with several bands, and has been in music videos ECT. I asked him once if he could go back and change being sick and all the pain and struggle he went threw. He told me no, because he is happy with who he is now, he loves his music, he is proud of what he has accomplished, and if he changed that one thing he wouldn't have become who he is, he may never had found his love for music. Sorry for the long post. Just thought someone might need to hear that right now.

I saw Tony Arata on a TV interview once. He wrote this song when he and his wife were living in a small rented house outside of Nashville. He wrote it in a small laundry room. He tried to sell the song but got no takers He and Garth were doing the same open mics and neither he nor Garth were famous at the time. Garth told him that if he ever recorded an album that that song would be on it. He did and it was. Garth knew that it was a very special song. So do the rest of us. I still remember the first time I heard it. Thanks for playing it.

This song can relate to the loss of friends and those loved ones we have all lost. In the official video the imagery of JFK, MLK, Lane Frost, John Wayne, and others will bring a tear to even the most stoic folks. Even though Garth retired at the height of his career, these songs are still played everywhere.

I don't think that this song must be about a love relation, it can be about life and what makes you into you. If it can be so, then THE DANCE is about making things the wrong, or right way and learning from it, right? Perhaps the DANCE is about taking the CHANCE, you could win, or lose, but you never know unless you try it, right? That is how I think about the song, that kind of makes it different if you listen to it like that, right?

I highly recommend you watch the Official Garth Video of this song. It shows clips of people who died too soon...and so many other beautiful lyrics about loved ones that have passed away. Everyone who loves this song...should watch the official Video at least Once. You won't regret it. I cannot say that enough. This song is beautiful in any form...but the official video is amazing and soothing. The vocals are also more beautiful in the Video...unless you prefer a simple guitar which Garth plays beautifully too. I have been a Garth fan for many years.

Lane Frost - World Champion Bull rider, who was killed in 1989 by the bull he rode for a full eight seconds during a rodeo. Keith Whitley - Country singer who died in 1989 from alcohol poisoning. The Whitley scenes featured his then-wife Lorrie Morgan. Martin Luther King Jr. - Baptist minister who is best known for his involvement in the Civil Rights Movement and was assassinated in 1968. The crew of the Space Shuttle Challenger, shortly before it disintegrated after its launch in 1986. John F. Kennedy - President of the United States who was assassinated in 1963. John Wayne - Film actor best known for his roles in Westerns and died of cancer in 1979. These are the people this song was dedicated to.

I wish you could see the video he did with this song: it depicted famous people who could have had a different life if they didn’t do what they did. Martin Luthier King and President JFK.. Garth Brooks is one of my all time favorite singers.

I am going to share this poignant story with the world. I am from Spain and I live in Mallorca. In 1996 I was 26 and about to go and live In South Carolina with a family when I was enjoying Garth Brooks songs and specially "The Dance". In the summer of 1996 I arrived to Conway, near Myrtle Beach and I stayed with this wonderful family who had just had twins and needed the help of an au pair. That was me. My english was poor but I managed. I was not prepared for what was going to happen though. When I met the twins they were only three weeks old. Tiny, beautiful, delicate, pure. I had never taken care of babies but I became her second mother during the day while the parents were working. For some reason I don't understand, although I loved both of them profoundly, I had an special connection with the boy, Glenn Ross Gangi. I used to put this song "The Dance" and dance it with him during my stay, which was a whole year. When I had to live the USA I was so sad and miserable I couldn't bear the pain. My heart broke into a million pieces having to say goodby to the twins, specially my little Glenn Ross. I have always wanted to thank him because I could never become a mother but thanks to him I could experience the love that a mother can have for a child. I found them one day on facebook and they are gorgeous so I am happy that I did something important for that family. I am proud I could be a mother for one year thanks to them and yes, when I listen to this song I can feel my heart is still broken because I can't dance with that baby anymore. Thank you for reading this, I love American people, you treated me really well and I miss being there. Wish you the best to all of you.❤

If you'd like to step outside the mainstream, check out zydeco music. Cajun and zydeco are similar-zydeco is cajun music injected with the style of black creoles, and it's how we get the party started. Keith Frank, "Haterz" and "Movin on Up"...couple of favorites.

There’s a video on RU-vid of a live performance of a song called Wild Horses and the title says 1993 on it. It’s a Grand Ole Opry performance and it’s such, such, such an underrated cowboy song. It’d be so cool if a RU-vidr could react to it!
