They’re definitely not spotlight hogs. They appreciate each others voices and talents and it comes across…plus they’re hilarious and don’t take themselves too seriously. If you get the chance you should see them in concert.
They were once asked in an interview how they chose who would be the lead for their songs. The3y said any of the members that would like to lead a song would sing their arrangement of that song then vote on the one they liked best. that member then got the lead, they said that that was what took place when they were doing "When A Man Loves A Woman". Austin won the lead by unanimous vote. You should check out their live Performance of "Colder Weather Derailed. Hilarious.
We are incredibly lucky that they found each other. Their voices work so well together. And they are geniuses at picking the right voice for each song - or section of a song, as they did here.

You're pretty much correct. Super high-level acapella groups have to have ;lead singer ability in multiple singers in the group to be able to pull of the different genres and different harmonies.
You called it correctly, they vote on who does the lead in their songs. No Primadonnas in Home Free. I think that is another reason I love Home Free. I've watched their live performance of this song and it sounds the same.
Its a harmony group so they could all sing the part and the others can back up but when they try to stay close to original they use the correct vocal range.

Britt, please there's no need to apologize, because I know one thing HF does so superbly, is to find endlessly creative ways to re-create, and refresh all the songs they cover...finding hidden treasure in the artists original work is something they have "genius level" skill at doing....you are SO right, they keep making every song they do sound better in new exciting ways...it's in their DNA... I think they also pick music the whole group really admires and loves and that passion is I think the magic that occurs in their versions of the music...

Sometimes they choose a song to fit a certain voice or a voice to fit a song, sometimes they all try it out and see who sounds best, but as Austin said - none of them want the responsibility of being "the" lead singer. And it greatly expands the types of music they can do, too.
There’s a recent interview on RU-vid where they discuss who sings what part. Tim’s vocal rang is so wide that, not only he is the deepest bass, but also the highest tenor. So they switch off a lot, and a lot of the listeners never notice.
No sythesizing. Their is no autotuning on any of their songs. Just pure talent. They do layer vocals and beat boxing in some of their songs though. And the folks below are correct, they are even better live.
Some of that buzzing you hear is the effect their harmonies blending so tightly. When any acapella group does it well it produces an effect called sound expansion. Which means the mechanics of the harmonies produce more sound than the singers are generating organically. It also produces an "overtone" that's not being sung by anyone. Hence the buzzing sound.
During this reaction I heard you comment on how you liked the poetic lines in these lyrics. If you love poetic lyrics, as I do, I would like to recommend a couple of songs for your pleasure or for reactions. The first is Glen Campbell"s "Gentle on my mind"; the second is Bob Lind's "Elusive Butterfly". These are from the 60's when I was especially young and foolish. Now I am neither. I grew up in what I think was the best era. We had the best cars, the best hairdos, the best skirt length, the best looking bell bottom jeans, the shortest "short shorts", and absolutely the best music. Now I am now very senior but if I am listening to music, it is from that era. There are a few newer groups that I like,"Home Free" especially, but it is mostly "Oldies" like myself. Enjoy.
We’re not mad. For me I always love HF’s version. Their arrangements are so good and all the guys can sing so what’s not to like?!! All the boys got to shine in this and that’s right, there’s no lead singer. 😄🤩
They know exactly which voice is the best fit for a specific song or even just part of a song. So sometimes they all share the lead, sometimes one person sings everything or something in between. Because the music is the important factor, not their ego
This was one of the songs HF sang when they were on "The Sing Off" in 2013. Over the last few months they've been re-recording those performances with new videos. One reason for this I believe is because they have improved the arrangements for those songs and I believe "The Sing Off" owns the rights to the TV performances and the record that Home Free recorded "Crazy Life" as the "Prize" for winning the competition. HF plans to re-release all those songs on their own album called "Crazier Life"
My favorite they've already done a video for... "I want crazy", this though is a very close 2nd, with "Have yourself a merry little Christmas" (it was a duet with Jewel on the Sing-Off) and the re-released it Christmas 2022 and the harmonies are unbeatable there...in such a 1950's style that is so very special.
A major difference in the remakes is Adam Chance and his contributions to the group. Chris Rupp was on The Sing-Off, but left in 2016 and Chance took his spot
Not mad at all for the love for Home Free....many folks say that Home Free doesn't do remakes, they do upgrades! I also think that depending on the song, and who takes the lead, every ONE of these men could be members of the PDC!!!! Much love from Maryland~
If you have a few minutes and want a good laugh, there is a live version where Austin forgets his lines. Rob cracks up and Tim makes fun. Nothing to really react to but a good few minutes of laughs. It is the same verse as he dies here.
This was so beautiful! Always enjoy the songs that showcase all the individual voices. I have always loved this song when Home Free first did it on the "Sing Off" & then redid it a few years later. But I think this 3rd remake is my favorite version now.
@@rcinsley The first one was done on the Sing Off with Chris Rupp. Then they redid it with Chance a few years later. I just think this 3rd version is more polished as their voices have matured.

Zac Brown Band is a full band and have some of the best instrumentalist and harmonies out there. You definitely should react to the studio version of this song from ZBB
Well to be fair the video she picked was not the usual zac brown band performance because usually there are multiple voices and complex harmonies from them

Despite the naysayers in these comments(some of which Iam sure have an agenda on hand) this is BRILLIANT !! Their harmonies are just unmatched in the business despite the shade some of the comments here are throwing at Home Free...they are just mad and they know in their hearts it's true.
You need to watch a ZB performance of it with the full band. Not the acoustic. Everyone in that band is amazing at what they do. Amazing in concert too!
This cover is a staple in my music library and the blend of their voices is so angelic to me in this song. 5:21 yes, yes, yes…all dropped to the floor. There is no time when I listen to this song that I don’t play back his vocal moments. They are so special, so pure and amazing it hits my soul!
Not one lead singer but four!! They have a group mentality and as you said, they choose the vocalist that best fits the song. Even their beatboxer, Adam, is an awesome singer who joins in as he did in Brothers in Arms. You must hear their recently released cover of Cruise by Florida Georgia Line. They take any song and bring out the hidden beauty in it!!!
If you liked this song check out a couple from the writer, Levi Lowrey. Specifically "Another Sunday Morning Hangover" and especially "Yesterday's Fool" which, in my opinion, is one of the best examples of songwriting ever.

They don't have one lead singer. They have four lead singers. Sometimes all four of them will get their moment to shine like this. They first sang this on The Sing-Off. This was the judges ' choice..
Homefree will do that to u man. I love Zac Brown band but HF has a way of taking an original, making it their own, and making it better! Plus u gotta respect it even more cause there is no music!! When I hear the line, "When I close my eyes I see you no matter where I am... I'm with your Ghost again." It reminds me of this beautiful girl I knew years ago, I had to leave her behind because she wouldn't stop using drugs. She died in 2017 from an overdose. But there was nothing I could do to save her.
Well to be clear, you listened to Zac Brown do an "acoustic" rendition, w/out the band of this song..much different than the Zac Brown Bands live and or studio version" ... Home Free did an excellent version though, no doubt..
You seemed surprised when you saw Adam and his long hair. He lets it grow long enough so that when it's cut he an donate it to make wigs for children who have lost their hair being treated for cancer.
Everything Home Free covers is better than the original. My favorite is In The Blood. It's hard to say that 9-to-5 is better because, well, it's a cover of Dolly Parton. But it is a really good cover.

This song is great for them, although maybe the group sound doesn't give it the loneliness that ZBB did. Great example of how different arrangements can emphasize different things. Zac Brown Band actually shows off the band in the videos of a number of their songs - check out "Toes in the Water".
Hey Britt, So good to see you reacting to this song by HF. This is one song that made me fall in love with them when they were on the Sing off! This version is SO GOOD. Never heard of PDC before but I love it, Austin def fits in with Tom jones in that category. PS, I like this version too!!
