The original MV of this song is just James looking into the camera singing the song, and at the end you see his dad. At the time of this recording his Dad was dying of stage 4 kidney failure. After the video came out a distant cousin was tested and was a match, and a kidney transplant saved his Dad. James did a wonderful tribute to his father. The first time I saw the MV performance, I was a puddle of tears.
This video really hits home for me. My father passed from cancer in 2016. I've seen this video so many times and almost every time I cry. I cried this time mostly because of you.
I've heard the song hundreds of times and still cry every single time. Lost my old man to a brain tumour and the folded your clothes on the chair line hits hard.
It seems as though we’ve lived parallel lives, cuz I lost my dad to cancer/brain tumors, as well. I found this song a week before he passed, & the “Folding Your Clothes On The Chair” part hit so hard & I 💯 had done that when he was admitted to the hospital. (Where he passed 9 days later) I almost used this song for the slideshow we showed at his services, but ended up choosing, ‘Jealous Of The Angels’. I believe I still have it on my channel.
The Official Video is much better. In it right at the end his Father pats James on then arm and it cuts there. The reason was because his Father look at him and said, 'I'm still alive Son'. That was Personal so was cut out.
Steph. just bit of background...James and his father were both officers (tank commanders) in the British military, and emotions were very rarely shared between them, but when James' dad was diagnosed with Stage 4 kidney failure, he wrote this song. The music video you see was recorded exactly as you see it. James wanted it to be absolutely real, and authentic, and that's why he's so emotional. Thankfully his father found a donor eventually, and survived but when the song was written, everyone thought his dad was going to struggle to find a donor. All the proceeds from this record were donated by James to the UK's wonderful charity for ex-servicemen and servicewomen 'Help For Heroes' who do such amazing work. James is a wonderful man and I know his dad must be very proud of him.

I completely agree with you, was actually shocked that someone would do this......I am sure she has great intentions, but this song stands on it's own, no one needs to edit the video in any way.
You obviously totally misunderstood the wrong. James has a very strong relationship with his father and wanted to give him the perfect last message before it was too late.

The original video is Blunt singing into the camera, and the last shot of him and his dad. The clips mixed in are from the film Billy Elliot. It's a moving story, and obviously the clips can be edited to convey the emotion of Blunt's song. It was nicely done, actually. Hard to listen to Blunt sing this - and even harder to WATCH him sing it. The video - like all music videos - is pre-recorded and then lip synced. Well, not really lip synced. He's really singing it, it's just not the audio that's used. But even shooting the video, he clearly is very affected by what was happening to his Dad at the time, and the emotion comes through immediately. Good reaction.
Strange video version, why the hell was it interspersed with footage from the film "Billy Elliott" absolutely wrong and added nothing but spoilt the true meaning.

As most children are, they are afraid of the sounds (of the night) ie: monsters as well as the ones we think are in our closets and under our beds. We have our Fathers to (chase) assure us that they are gone when they are chased away. As we grow to adulthood and it's our time to take care of our fathers the roles are reversed and it' our time to chase the monsters away, not really having anything to do with the type of relationship between the two. IT's love for each other and now as adults we are on the same plane as our parents.

Great reaction to a great song. But to be honest I've never heard of this song from the original James Blunt version. I actually know this song because Cakra Khan covered it.
Subtitles aside that was a completely different video someone has made. Such a shame they thought they could 'improve' on the original, because they completely ruined it. Such a shame for you to see that version first time you heard the song.
The line "I'm not your son you're not my father we're just 2 grown men saying goodbye" was what he dad said to him obviously in reverse, when he said goodbye to James when James went to the Kosovo war where he served as a tank commander. All proceeds to the song went to the veterans charity Help for Heroes.
Love to hear an emotional story, for me have a great father who's always there, had an amazing mother, she was great is in any way possible. She unfortunately made the decision to commit suicide. This song always make me think of her. Know this song is about fathers. But to me it's about familily and appreaciating close and loved ones
Such a beautiful song with James and his raw emotions, have no clue who ruined this video by having additional footage that has nothing to do with what James is singing about....not a fan at all of changing what he created 😤

I think this video takes away from the meaning of the song. Would have been better w/ official video w/ just James Blunt singing to his father. I don't know what that other stuff was, if it was scenes from a movie, but this song wasn't about their being estranged. They were both military & didn't express a lot of emotion, and I read the "...not...son...and...father...just 2 men saying goodbye," was something they said once when being deployed, acknowledging their respect for each other as service men facing war regardless of who was dad & who was son, so I imagine this was kind of his way of saying I'm man enough to face this with you as well, when he felt this last battle was nearing an end for his dad. So nothing in the past mattered now because nobody's perfect but he as a man was there to chase the monsters away for his dad like his dad had done for him as a child. They both thought his dad was dying because they couldn't find a match for a kidney transplant, but this song kind of saved his life because after the song came out, a distant cousin who was a match came forward and he got the kidney after all.

She put in a video that had Portuguese translations and she did that because she said she would be able to to better understand it and u guess thats what that version had a video of along w James Blunts. She did mention that in the beginning of the video 🤦♂️
