I love how Plant playing the harmonica throws so many people. His harmonica work is so good in this song its unreal, he makes it scream, moan and cry, doesnt get any better.

Agree 100%. His harmonica playing makes audible and/or underlines the fear, the anguish, helplessness of the people's situation re. the flood. And just technically: epic harmonica playing.

This is real blues. It is full of pain. It’s about the 1927 Mississippi River flood. They dynamited the levees to save Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Flooded and destroyed the rural south. Killed hundreds of people, caused the breakup of thousands of black families as the men had to leave for big northern cities to find work. This song is a cover that Zeppelin reworked and made their own. Drums on this had a heavy influence on Hip Hop.

ryan c the counter to Floyd is song vs album. Floyd’s albums are second to none. But they are operas. They tell stories from a start to a finish. Once you take the songs out of the opera not all of them work. They’re still good but not as great. Led is songs. Play any song on its own and almost all are awesome. They don’t need the opera to make them that much better. Example, “Hey you,” great song on its own. But in its place on the album... so much better. Dang, now I don’t know if that made my point or yours. I’ll stick with Zeppelin as the GOAT band and Pink as the GOAT story tellers.

That's, in essence , what they said, " it over." In 1980, when Bonham died, they had been making albums & touring heavily for 11 years. They had already more than made their mark, the first band to sell more albums than the Beatles, in 1969. And the same lineup the whole time. Like the Beatles, a new member in such an iconic band would have never worked, for the band OR the fans. Cultured as they may have been, Jimmy Page would have considered it high praise, indeed, to say, " we out." Btw, l had some dealings with their road manager, Richard Cole. He was a rascist little bitch, punk ass motherfucker. As it turned out, the band didn't like his punk ass much either. During what would become the film, Song Remains the Same, tens of thousands of dollars were stolen, in cash, out of the hotel safe. Guess who the fuck they suspected... that's right, Richard punk ass Cole.

@@12bar145ne Surprised Peter Grant (Zeppelins' great manager) didn't break every bone in Cole's body if that's true. Cole worked directly for Grant. Grant was paid 20% of Zeppelin's earnings (by his own admission) out of which he paid Cole out of his own pocket as road manager. Grant was the best manager in the business, had managed The Yardbirds before Zeppelin, which was why he and Jimmy Page were so close, and was one tough mother******. He negotiated, what was for that time, the highest advance ever given a band by a record company with Atlantic records. Zeppelin stayed with Atlantic their entire career.

Rock (at least in the beginning) was just blues played by white kids. That's what made it more acceptable to 1950's America. A huge portion of Zeppelin's songs are either covers of, or borrow heavily from pre-existing blues songs. If it wasn't for liking Zeppelin as a teenager I'd have never been inspired to find their influences and appreciate blues artists for what they gave the world. It's also hard to look back and see the way the genres were segregated unfairly and the way black artists were never fully appreciated in their time.
