Norm got fired from SNL because he refused to stop doing OJ jokes. There’s a compilation of them that’s like a half hour long. Courtney Thorne-Smith’s said she did in fact love this segment because she didn’t have anything positive to say about the movie.

I love that he refused to be muzzled over trashing a garbage human being who got away with a double murder. NBC execs who were buddies of OJ told him to stop trashing OJ or be fired and he went out and ROASTED OJ in the very next SNL episode. And was promptly canned! Lol

Actually they were going to fire Jim Downey, a writer on the show who worked closely with Norm, but Norm was not going to be fired. However Norm told them if they fired Jim they would have to fire him too so they did. Jim told that story on the Fly on the Wall podcast recently. Even he didn’t know what really happened until three years after the firing when Norm told him.

Courtney Thorne-Smith, the girl on Conan who did a movie with Carrot Top, said in an interview shortly after Norm passed away that she LOVED getting teased by Norm. She was not enthusiastic about promoting the movie, and she was grateful Norm hijacked the segment. She also said she and her father genuinely like that kind of comedy, so it was like a treat for her to experience it first hand. Those are her words.

This showcases one thing I love about Norm: he deliberately used extremely tame "roasts", and ones that he knew wouldn't "land" as this was so much more funny. The sheer awkwardness was something to behold. You can tell why he loved The Office (original version) so much.
@tbannach91

@3:36 this joke is even more hilarious to me now, because of something I recall from about ten years ago. Back then he was doing his RU-vid podcast and I was obsessed with him, and I also followed him on Twitter. Norm actually made his own book club from on a different account named nmbookclub and I remember actually having the cool experience of him replying to me there (I think he was talking about why Tolstoy was a greater Russian author than Dostoevsky, which I disagree with). But then listening to him make this joke made it even funnier for me, because it confirms what most of his fans know, he was a truly brilliant, deep thinker but his favorite thing was to act like an ignorant rube.

3:50 He was an old school kind of guy (although very subversive in a way). And he also enjoyed acting like he was older than he really was. I think he grew up around old people and always found them to be very funny. 16:42 The reason so many comedians look up to him is because his comedy was unique, because he did what he wanted to do independently of what was popular at the time, and because he wasn't fake. He was also a very smart person (and somewhat eccentric). In fact some big comedians of his time that loved and admired him were a bit worried that his career in comedy would not be successful in the long term, not because of a lack of talent, but precisely because of the things I listed earlier.

Don’t you know that the word that begins with RE and ends in RD… was a clinical word. It only became seen as a slur when it was hurled loosely at others. It’s also a real verb meaning “to slow.” The adjective form, ending in ED was used legitimately to discuss those with slower faculties.
@seedy80
@seedy80 5 месяцев назад
Many slurs start out as polite forms of replacing previous slurs, which themselves were polite replacements for even earlier slurs. Either way, we just pick a new way of saying the same thing a different way every few years. Then we get angry about how things used to be so mean.

Each has their advantages. I loved having time to chat about each episode with family, friends, and coworkers and speculate what would happen next week before binging shows became a thing, but it's also nice to be able to go immediately from one episode to the next and not have to wonder what will happen (especially since I often think of really cool stuff I'd like to see and then it's a disappointment what actually happens, lol). Norm has a sharp tongue and a sharp wit. I would not want him to roast me. Norm had a special place in his heart for Orenthal. Norm was friends with Kato Kaelin. He would insert Orenthal jokes into many of his SNL News updates. I believe he was talking about "Lost" with Jimmy Kimmel - and that was a real deal. There were chat groups dedicated to uncovering easter eggs and trying to figure out what was going on in the show. I feel like binge-watching doesn't give you time to appreciate all the little things in each episode. "9 1/2 Weeks" was a SCANDALOUS movie with Mickey Rourke and peak-hotness Kim Basinger. Norm was well-read in current events and politics, and worked it into his stuff.

You need to watch his appearances on the Dennis Miller show. Classic Norm.

I like waiting for a show to end because I want to watch it at my own speed, but also, I don't like getting invested in a show just to have it cancelled after a couple of seasons. Norm MacDonald was one of my favorite comedians ever! I loved him on SNL in the 90s. A couple of skits where he played Tommy Lee were pretty awesome and I always looked forward to the Weekend Update! Britt, I see you watched TBS before school in the mornings.

Hidden gem, "Norm MacDonald gift basket." It's Conan O'Brien being roasted probably the hardest he ever has been in his whole career, and he dies laughing.

I’m 65 and have experienced a lifetime of “delayed gratification.” I gave that up for Lent a few years ago. 😂 I’m with you, Britt. If I can’t binge every season of a show, I’m not watching.

Still one of my favorite comics. Keeps me on my toes. Looking to see where he's going with a joke. Great love, and admiration between him and Letterman.

Norm became a favorite guest on the David Letterman Show and continued until Dave retired. There's very funny videos of those shows that are as good as Conan's.

Britt, you need to react to Norm on Conan's show telling his joke about his French Canadian uncle first trip to NYC.

Norm is an absolute legend. You'd have tk watch his early stand up and SNL weekend update and skits. His guest spots on conan and letterman are hilarious

I'm with you on binge watching a show I like. Amazon is making viewers wait for each episode of Reacher and it drives me nuts. So, I will just wait until they've aired them all.

Yeah, you definitely have to watch Norms White House correspondents dinner speech. Pure gold.

In my opinion, the Holy Grail of Norm moments is when he told his "Dirty Johnny" joke to Stephen Merchant... it's unlike anything else. If you can react to that, you will not regret it.

It probably should be noted that Norm's weight gain was due to his Cancer Treatment that he kept secret from everyone.

Aww sucks you missed Conan’s setup to norms “chairman of the b-o-r-e-d” joke. He said “do something with that you creep” and it made it so much funnier when he did

1:08 Norm liked sports, but more importantly he loved sports betting. He has said that he lost everything twice. The movie "Rounders," is supposedly based on him. He has also stated that once when he was Atlantic City, he won $90,000 and threw it all into the ocean.

Norm participated in an actual Roast (of his good friend Bob Saget). If you can find the video, it is epic. Good idea to read up on the background of how and why Norm prepared for the roast the way he did. Only Norm could do what he did that night. The ending is beautiful. This is Saget explaining it: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-LwPEXIazi2Y.html
