Not filmed on an iPad (that was "Moves Like Jagger") and it was in a kitchen (the audio was recorded in the closet). FifGen Films (a boutique production company) professionally filmed and produced the video, but the budget was very tight.
Well...there were post production costs. I know they did the initial filming and editing themselves in one of their apartments, but they did send it out for "polishing"
Just think: Britt has just barely scratched the surface on Home Free, Pentatonix and Geoff. And hasn't yet heard anything by Voiceplay and Voctave. Britt has quite the journey in front of her with the acapella groups.
I need her to hear "my mother told me" and "oogie boogie song" by VoicePlay, "I can't make you love me" and "house of the rising sun" by Geoff Castellucci, "hopelessly helping"/"end of the road"/"American pie" and, when ready, "mayday" by Home Free. im like...GET ON THIS!!!
@@sersastark I totally agree with you, I'd throw in a few more from PTX, such as Radioactive, Amazing Grace, The Sound of Silence, Love me when I don't. Home Free, I'd have Britt hear more of their early stuff (Butts mix), My Church then go to Mayday to hear how they flip everything. Voiceplay, the theater kids of Acapella, but I'd include This is Halloween and Geoff has so many pieces he's done in last few years such as Monster Mash, Country Roads and Ghost Riders In the Sky. Geoff even has a few readings ie Poetry to listen to
Kevin is the beatboxer and you are correct; he was unable to tolerate the contacts. From how red his eyes were it appears that Avi (the bass) was also having some problems with them, but managed anyway. The trio seem to have managed with no trouble. You're also correct about this being a medley; it incorporates seven Daft Punk songs. The audio was recorded in a closet (it had good acoustics). The video was recorded at their makeup artist's kitchen table. Their budget was around $400, most of which went for makeup (presumably including the contacts), one ring light, and professional editing. This won them their first Grammy, for Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Cappella; Ben Bram (sometimes known as "the sixth member of Pentatonix") was also credited as an arranger, so he shared the Grammy with them. Before Pentatonix's "Daft Punk Medley" came out NARAL had no categories for a cappella; they had to change the category name from "Best Arrangement Instrumental" to "Best Arrangement Instrumental or A Cappella" just so Pentatonix could be *nominated,* let alone win. Their second Grammy, for "Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairy," was in the same category. Their third Grammy, which they shared with Dolly Parton, was for their collaboration with Dolly (she was 71 at the time) on her iconic song "Jolene." The category was Best Country Duo/Group Performance. It was the first time *Dolly Parton* had won a Grammy for Jolene!
As others have said, they filmed this in a closet, and won their first Grammy with this. I also recommend their cover of Sound of Silence and Imagine. They're also really good!
The Sing Off had their teeth whitened for the show. After they lost the recording contract, they thanked the Sing Off for their pearly whites. If you want to watch their Michael Jackson Medley, you can see the whole thing done in 1 take.
Done in a closet and kitchen at Mitch’s house I believe, and it cost about $400! They won a GRAMMY for this! Run To You, mentioned by Avi, is an original of theirs written by Avi and Kevin (the beat boxer), so beautiful and heartbreaking, please watch ❤. Happy Valentines Day❤❤❤
Considering your reaction each time Avi sings you have to listen to his solo music sometime! He’s got a gorgeous live recording for 7Layers of his original All is well, just him and a guitar and it’s one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard!
♥ I've been waiting for this one! You'll love their original song, Love Again. This is a mashup of Technologic, One More Time, Get Lucky, Digital Love, Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger, Television Rules the Nation, and Around the World.
Yes Kevin could not wear the contacts, so these cool glasses were provided to him, Avi the bass singer also had a hard time with the contacts his eyes are slightly red. Great reaction as always! try another one of their grammy award winning music "Jolene with Dolly Parton or Dance of the Sugar plum fairies" Thanks!
The reason why Kevin (pretty sure it's Kevin) is wearing glasses is that he couldn't wear the contacts they were using. So they found some technoflash sunglasses for him to keep the look.
The actual Daft Punk video for "One More Time" was animated with the band members being blue cartoon characters . Years before Avatar. I've never heard Pentatonix explain the blue contacts, but I'm guessing it was an homage to that video. And if you never have seen Daft Punk, it's a French duo that wore robot looking helmets. Unable to wear the contacts, Kevin's eye gear most likely is another tribute to the original band members.
Currently, Pentatonix will each record their individual tracks independently in the studio (once they've come up with the arrangement, of course). Those will be edited together; I forget the name of their editor - not Ben Bram, someone else. Then for their official video they'll all sing together, but the actual audio will be the studio recording - by actually singing when they make the video they can lip-synch to the studio recording in a more genuine manner; everyone is in proper time, their lips, tongues, and hands are moving the way they normally do while singing, etc.. For this one it's less clear. I'm pretty sure they recorded the audio individually; I don't know how big that closet was but doing it all together sounds distinctly crowded. But it appears that they also recorded the video separately, since they only bought one ring light and we see it behind each of them. Remember, this was *very* early in their career; they were still working things out and they didn't own their own studio. In 2014 the trio would have been 21 or 22; Avi would have been 24 or 25; and Kevin would probably have been 25 as well, depending on how early in the year they recorded this. Now, timing is very important, always, for group singing. When recording separately it is absolutely essential that everyone get that right. Currently they use some kind of ear bud device that gives them a click beat, like a metronome, to keep them in time with each other, but I can't imagine that they had that back then. If you see videos where they're asked to improvise something on the spot they'll start by asking Kevin to give them some rhythm and they'll then work from there. So my *guess* would be that they had Kevin record his track first, and then were using ear phones to listen to it while they each sang their individual tracks. The only problem with this theory (and I emphasize that I'm guessing here) is that the ear phones in question would have had to be the kind that let you hear everything around you, because otherwise the singer would hear her or himself only through bone conduction, and that's a really good way to sing out of tune. This is why people wearing headphones and singing along to the music they're listening to generally sound horrible. Choir singers are taught that if they need to hear themselves better they shouldn't do it by sticking a finger in an ear but by cupping a hand over the ear; that way they can hear themselves by both air conduction and bone conduction.
I consider this one a mandatory stop on the PTX journey. I know how you felt when you just couldn't find the words. Be sure to watch some of their live performances because many of them are excellent in showing the bare talent of the group.
Thanks for your reaction. It's always fun watching someone just discovering how talented and entertaining this group is. You have a lot to discover down this rabbit hole. BTW, yes, it is a Daft Punk medley...in this case a mix of 7 songs: Technologic; One More Time; Get Lucky; Digital Love; Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger; Television; and Round the World (most people miss this the first time - it's sung by Kirstie underneath Avi when he sings "Television", and again in the final moments).
Maybe helps a bit...😊 Pentatonix Pentatonix has won three Grammy Awards: they were the first a cappella act to win Best Arrangement, Instrumental or A Cappella, doing so in 2015 and 2016, ... Past members: Avi Kaplan Members: Mitch Grassi;(high voice) Kirstin Maldonado; Scott Hoying;(tall blonde) Kevin Olusola(beat boxer); Matt Sallee (new bass) Origin: Arlington, Texas, U.S Total views: 5.9+ billion
Yes, it's a medley of Daft Punk songs. Yes, Kevin couldn't wear the contacts so he has the glasses. If you look at Avi (the bass singer) you can tell he struggled with them. You can see how red his eyes are.
Sound of Silence, Amazing Grace, Can’t Hold Us, Mad World, Evolution of Michael Jackson and their originals Love Again and Coffee in Bed for a start. 💜
I've watched a ton of your reactions....this is the first one I ever watched where you stuttered, regrouped, and said.... "my ears are sweating!" Girl...that's the truest reaction I've ever seen! LOL! You rock!
By your reaction, I’m pretty sure that you’re a member of the family of Pentaholix at this point. As such, we welcome you and we will help guide you through your journey. A true masterpiece of arranging and visual artistry is their cover of My Favorite Things. Also, check out the originals like Coffee in Bed or Be My Eyes. Enjoy!❤
Thank you! Thank you! Someone's first comments are about the music and not the eyes. For me what sets this song apart from most is the the "musicality" of it.
This Acapella group is the best, you’ll ever hear. Also yes Kevin couldn’t wear the contacts, they irritated his eyes, hence the classes. 😂😂😂😂😂❤❤❤❤❤🇬🇧🇬🇧👏🏉🏉
I was so excited to see your reaction to Daft Punk when I saw it in my feed. I just knew you would be blown away, especially starting at 4:36. Great reaction and everything I expected.
Glad to have subscribed for you. Enjoy ALL of PTX. The bass here is Avi- he left the group but he’s amazing on his own. Mitch, Scott, and Kirstie have been singing together since high school. Kevin the best box is a tenor and plays the cello. They have one ?3 Grammys and this was one. Welcome to the PTX rabbit hole 🕳️ oh and yes! They have many melodies that mix songs from sane person group etc
Your react is so pure. Your hair is cute as hell. Your energy is fantastic and that smile for miles is lovely. Great react. I'm late to the game on this one but love it and, as always, Peace and Love to you and yours. Never walked away from a react by ja that didn't leave me in a better mood.
The story behind is interesting, they had their studio cancel at the last minute so this was recorded in Avi's closet for a total sum of about $400.00 And they won a grammy with this one.
If you want to see something amazing, please react to Pentatonix singing Dance of The Sugar Plum Ferries (2nd Grammy) Daft Punk they received their 1st Grammy The also got their 3rd Grammy for “Jolene” featuring Dolly Parton
I absolutely loved everything about your reaction to this one. You were right on the money about Kevin and the contacts. He just couldn’t tolerate them so they found cool shades for him. (And Avi’s eyes are red throughout, so it wasn’t easy for him either.) you can see similar energy in their Can’t Hold Us video and their original Sing. As others have said, their 90s Dance Medley will have you bopping along too. Thanks for this one, now go blow dry your sweaty ears and have a good nap! Peace from Ohio …
This is a medley of Daft Punk songs, thank you for clarifying that fact/title. Loved your reaction thanks for posting, stopping, rewinding, and talking. It was like introducing PTX to someone in person. Your facial expressions and random groans, jokes, commentary were literally the best.
Hey Britt, I see you reacted to this medley a year ago. Last year around this time I saw PTX in concert and it was 🔥 I think part of my brain was convinced that there had to be some sort of modification to the songs to sound so good, but no. After seeing them live I was just as if not more blown away by all this talent.
great react :) the Daft Punk song with Pharrell and the one that Kanye sampled and the others...so COOL...and these guys do something otherworldly with it
ok...we know you love MJ and Pentatonix so get to their MJ evolution video! Don't skip over that one! & loving the visuals and clothing choices as I know you do, you gotta see the PTX video Can't Sleep Love! You grew up singing in your church I think...(I did also)! Mary Did You Know has a religious theme and the harmonies will blow you away!!! Thanks for your o so great reaction videos...really, yours are the best!!! Bye for now
Baby, I am solid chair dancing with you. I would love to react to stuff with you. I love your react videos. You actually respect the song without walking all over it to get viewers. I watched him to do it for a three hour live concert and he even played the cello at the same time.
Gotta love Pentatonix but if you're curious some other well known acapella groups to check out are: Home Free, Voice Play, and Voctave. There are also artists like Peter Hollens who do acapella layering, where they cover all the beat boxing and vocals from just one person.
Great reaction! They are fantastic. Please react to (the bass) Avi Kaplans solo stuff so good. Would recommend Change on the rise. You won't be disappointed.
You have to picture this - the record company drops them does not believe acapella would do $$ good - they take $400 film this in a closet - edit it in the kitchen - and win their first Emmy for it. They have never looked back! Oh I am so glad you are down the rabbit hole! Cant wait for you to react to Imagine - Mary did you know - The Prayer and Aha Singapore to name just a few of my favorites but oh so many more as well!
Kevin is not human. It is also important to keep in mind with these guys that at this point in their career, they were doing EVERYTHING. Video design, make up, costumes, arrangements. It was all on them, and for the most part, they have not deviated away from their signature style, so generally speaking, everything you see with them is from their heart and soul. They are truly an anomaly. This is one of the deepest rabbit holes on RU-vid, so I will just tell ya to pick anything. They don't don't anything that isn't impressive as hell. This medley won them their first Grammy, and they literally needed to create a category for them. There was never an A Capella category until PTX came along!
Welcome to the rabbit hole. Their catalogue is so incredible. Emotional punch highest from Imagine, or Mad World. Pure talent that will blow you away Amazing Grace.
This is one of my favorites from Pentatonix. They did another one very similar to this, called "Love Again," but it's an original, not a cover. Citizen Queen is an all-girl acapella group like Pentatonix. You should check them out.
You were right. Kevin had a bad reaction to the contacts so he wore the Viper glasses instead, which ended up being a great look for the video especially with how it reflected the halo light.
To expand on what has been said, the recording company dropped them, so they scraped together the last $400 they had, and did what they had to in order to get this recorded. (I'm not saying what all that $400 paid for, or if any more was spent, but $400 is the only amount I've heard mentioned by PTX.) Then they met at Avi and Kevin's apartment, did the vocals in a closet, then hung blackout curtains and filmed the video on an ipad. They made some kind of deal with a new post production company to do this for super cheap, and PTX would only use them for a period of time. A deal that worked out great for both groups. So knowing this, it should make the whole thing that much more spectacular. They won their first Grammy from this song.
