Greetings Christine to you and your sister. I'm an American of Mexican descent in 2019 I visited the island of Bohol and discovered that in Tagalog the word for monkey is chongo. The word in Mexican Spanish is Chango from native Mexican. Very similar. The standard Spanish word is mono for monkey. So, I'm convinced that the similarity came directly from Mexico. There, are probably other words like palenque that are native Mexican Spanish words that made it way into Tagalog. I read somewhere that during the Spanish colonial period when both Mexico and the Philippines were Spanish colonies that 200,000 Filipinos were brought into Mexico and eventually over time blended into the general population. Also, probably several thousand Native Mexican and Mexican mestizos were brought into the Philippines and also mixed in over time with the Philippine population. If you think about it Mexico most likely had more cultural exchange influence with the Philippines than Spain directly because of direct trade 1570s to 1821 more time than directly from Spain which was from 1821 to 1898. During World War II in 1945 there was a Mexican airforce squadron called Esquadron 201. That fought and help with the US and Filipino troops liberate the Island of Luzon you can find it on the internet.
