RIP Gary, your voice will live forever in my teenage memories. I live not far from Sothend on sea where the band started. The Essex coast probably gave them their sound as their songs always remind me of home by the sea. He passed last year and left a hole in the music world. 👍💚

You should definitely check out the version of Stairway To Heaven at the Kennedy Center Honors. They put an orchestra and several choirs behind it and the cherry on top is that Anne Wilson was on vocals and Nancy was on acoustic guitar. I absolutely loved this song as a child, it came out in May 1967 and I was born in October, of course I always heard the studio version, but this classical composition Air on the G String by Bach was one of my grandfather’s favorite songs and I fell in love with it too, so together it had such an incredible emotional impact on me, it’s just perfect. I don’t know if you had seen that I brought up this song in your livestream or not, because we went off on a bit of a political tangent 😂, but I am so thrilled that you shared this with us and even happier that you enjoyed it. Everyone have a blessed day ❤.

Love this song. I actually prefer the studio version from the 60's as it is the one I grew up on. This live version is very good though as it shows how powerful Gary Brooker's voice was even as he got older. "Conquistador" is another great song by Procol Harum. Sad to hear of his passing recently.

When I first saw this video, I also was trying to distinguish whether the sound was coming from a clarinet or oboe. Looks like most folks think it's an oboe. Either way, it's just beautiful. Was amazed to see Gary Booker still belting out this song in 2006, as he did when it was first released in 1967. Just incredible. Brings back the "feels" from early childhood. Love it! RIP Gary

This recording is in 2006. The original song was released in 1967, when the singer (Gray Brooker) was only 22 years old. His voice has barely changed. Procol Harum back then was one of another British rock & roll band, but they put out an early music video of this song. You can find it easily with a RU-vid search and see for yourself what it sounded like. The iconic linchpins of this song are Brooker's lead vocals and that Hammond organ. Procol Harum played a style of rock just arising in the mid-60s called Progressive Rock. This was experimental in nature, drawing inspiration and instrumentation from classical music, world music, avant-garde music, and new developments in instrumentation and recording techniques. Procol Harum in particular, like Pink Floyd, developed soundscapes and mood with their notation, lyrics, and arrangements. Their lyricist drew from avant-garde writing, whose purpose was not to provide literal or 'snapshot-sharp' descriptions of events, but something more dream-like, as if seen in visions or fog. They are meant to rely on the subconscious, leaving interpretation unique to the individual. Procol Harum's music and lyrics are quite literally 'a mood', and beautifully so. Given the blurred intent behind the lyrics, the meaning of this song has been debated since 1967. There is no clear or absolute idea, which was the lyrist's intent when crafting the words. To this day he will not provide any clue or verification of any component of his writing. Even the one clear item, "as the Miller told his tale", he denies as having anything to do with Chaucer's bawdy story "The Miller's Tale". I recommend doing a RU-vid search for "Procol Harum A Salty Dog Album cut". It was recorded and released 4 years after the original "A Whiter Shade of Pale" and, when compared with the 1967 recording, shows how they had grown. Great music.
