no auto tune , no stage shows, no dancers or special effects, just pure talent. i think this performance showcased the incredible stage presence that Freddy had.

It was a fundraiser for famine relief for Ethiopia. Dual concerts in London and Philadelphia, broadcast around the world to an audience around 1.5-2 billion, and featured most of the major musical acts of the era. Each band got 20 minutes. It is widely agreed that Queen absolutely stole the show.

Queen were one of the best bands ever and, as a frontman, Freddie IS the GOAT. He had a bad throat on the day, his doctor advised him not to go on and he does this!!!

There is so much to say about this performance. The biggest bands on the planet were performing live that day and they all agreed that Queen stole the show. There is a reason that it is considered the greatest live rock performance of all time.

Live Aid was a duel-venue concert held simultaneously at Wembley Stadium in London (audience of 72,000) and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia (audience of 90,000) that was connected and broadcast over 13 satellites worldwide to an audience of over 1.9 Billion. The purpose of the concert was to raise money to aid Ethiopia which was suffering from 2-year drought. There were 75+ acts, each allotted a 20-minute slot to perform. The UK line-up included Status Quo,, David Bowie, Elton John, Wham!, Sting, U2, The Who, Paul McCartney, and Bob Geldof with his band The Boomtown Rats. The US bill included Madonna, Eric Clapton, Duran Duran, Mick Jagger, Paul Simon, Led Zeppelin, and Tom Petty. Phil Collins played in both London and then caught the Concord Supersonic Jet and flew to perform again in Philly. Live Aid did not have a Queen audience. All of the tickets to Wembley were sold before Queen was announced to be part of the venue. At this time, Queen was considered to be an old band (they had been performing since 1971.) Those in the audience came to see groups like U2 and Wham! Also, remember the Live Aid at Wembley concert began at 12:00 London time (the Philly concert began 5 hours later), so the audience had been there in the sun and heat for nearly 7 hours by the time Queen performed. Paul Gambaccini, who was part of the BBC broadcasting team at Live Aid, recalled the awe among other superstar musicians watching backstage. “Everybody realized that Queen was stealing the show,” said Gambaccini. These were the very words Elton John uttered when he rushed into Freddie’s trailer after the set. “You bastards, you stole the show,” joked the charismatic star. “Queen smoked ’em. They just took everybody. They walked away being the greatest band you’d ever seen in your life, and it was unbelievable,” said Dave Grohl of Foo Fighters. “And that’s what made the band so great; that’s why they should be recognized as one of the greatest rock bands of all time because they could connect with an audience.” Queen's playlist was: 1. Bohemian Rhapsody (just the ballad and guitar portion) 2. Radio Ga Ga (the song that inspired Lady Ga Ga's name) 3. Freddie's Call and Response 4. Hammer to Fall 5. Crazy Little Thing Called Love 6. We Will Rock You (just the first verse and guitar solo) 7. We Are The Champions FYI- Freddie wrote "Crazy Little Thing Called Love" while bathing in his Berlin hotel. It took him about 10 minutes to write it. He was inspired and yelled for someone to bring him a guitar which he used to write the song. (Roger said he never understood how Freddie got that damn guitar in the tub.) He wrote it as a tribute to Elvis Presley. Not only does Freddie play a guitar on stage during this song (the only song in which he does) but Brian uses 3 different guitars during the song. Absolutely phenomenal performance from the best band on the day, Queen stole the show from any other artist that performed, Freddie Mercury with his legendary flamboyant performance had the crowd in the palm of his hand, I actually attended LiveAid at Wembley Stadium United Kingdom 🇬🇧 in 1985, and attended Freddie’s very last live performance ever at Knebworth Park UK 🇬🇧 The crowd was estimated to be 120,000 to 140,000 people,Queen all the guys were amazing musicians and all the members of the band have written NO1 hits, and Queens greatest hits album is still today the best selling album ever in the United Kingdom 🇬🇧, great reaction thanks 🙏

Aids was just being accepted by people at this time. Although Freddy could have been infected by this time, there was no inkling that he was sick yet. That happened 6-7 years later. This was Queen riding the top of their popularity, with RADIO GAGA being #1 the summer before. We are the world, Live Aid, and the UK's it's christmas after all were all charity concerts and songs for the starving children of Africa.

Just found you! I’m a 67y/o Glamma. You seem to enjoy the background of things. And, I’m a Trivia sponge, so here goes: They had just completed a Tour a month b4. So, they went & rented a Stadium to practice the performance. He ended up with a Throat Infection & the Doctor highly recommended he not do it bc he might lose his musical ability. He said no! Can you tell he had a severe throat infection? Most people think he was drinking booze from the cups bc on the piano. He’s drinking Honey & Tea. His command of the Audience was more than coincidence it was miraculous. Considering there were so many people there the sound was getting absorbed through them. So the people @ the back we’re following his hand gestures bc the actual sound hadn’t even reached them b4 the next sound was coming @ them. Go back & watch what his hands are doing & what the Audience is doing. NEXT: Radio Gaga is celebrating Radio bc M-TV is just getting started. LADY GAGA was a huge Freddie Fam growing up, so That was where she came up with HER STAGE NAME! You have to listen to the words to really understand the meaning. Most of us didn’t have a clue what a Band looked like unless we saw them in Person! NEXT-MICROPHONE. At sometime along the way a Microphone Stand broke, so that was the only spilt second solution they could come up with. He realized the freedom he had to move, dance, & engage the Audience. NEXT MICHAEL JACKSON & ELVIS CONNECTION on Song THING CALLED LOVE: It was written as his homage to Elvis-Freddie was a big fan. But, he just wasn’t sure about the song bc he didn’t want to taint Elvis. SO, he played it for Michael J. (Yes, they were friends!). And Michael told him he HAD TO, he said “Freddie, you have to”! (Can’t you just see that!?). NEXT FREDDIE’s VOICE. HE HAD 4 extra teeth so that’s the reason he had such an overbite. He had the ability to naturally flow from Octave to Octave. It was a natural progression, for him. SCIENTIFICALLY: Test were done on his Voice. He was able to use his Throat muscles on either side of his vocal cords. Which is normally seen in some Opera Singers. His Vocal Range was from Low Bass F, to High Soprano F! They were extremely surprised to find out that he could go from about 92Hz to 784Hz, effortlessly! See ACTUAL REPORT BELOW: nyone who has listened to a Queen track knows that Freddie has a unique ability that still has not been truly replicated since. His ability to blend highs, lows and mid range notes cohesively and with immense precision. This skill was due to the fact that Freddie was able to create faster vibrato and harmonics than any other singer at the time. Not only this, he was able to shift through registers effortlessly. Although he naturally held a baritone voice, he primarily sang as a tenor and of course had no problem then shifting into soprano parts. One study on Freddie’s vocal range even confirmed that he was able to vary from about 92.2 Hz to 784 Hz, meaning he was reliably able to hit notes from the booming low of F#2 to the high pitch G5 - that covers a full three octaves! 25:41 I’m sorry to take up your Valuable Time, and I thank you. Watching this it’s hard to believe Freddie had a severe throat infection and doctors advised him to not perform. I got chills watching this on tv as a 15 year old and still get chills today. The group was perfection! 💛💛💛💛

According to the documentary it wasn't only the audience at Wembly who clapped along, those in Philadelphia did too, which must have been a very powerful moment. Sadly I wasn't there; I'm well old enough to have been but was grieving the loss of my husband at the time.Wonderful performance ahead of its time.

72,000 people were at Wembley, sold out crowd. 1.9 million people worldwide watched thisvconcert. Whole thing was over 16 hours and I'm so glad i was able to see most of it. We didn't have cable but it was aired on regular tv. Therecwas over 400,000 at Woodstock

He was a god, i miss hearing and watching him perform so much. I grew up listening to queen with my dad. i cry watching him in this every time because of how amazing he was here and he was ill; he had a bad sore throat and small cold; he had aids by this point sadly. his doc said don't do the show and he did it anyways. they fundraised sososo much $ when queen took the stage; it was a huge show for a great cause!! Elton john hugged freddie when he came off stage and him and everyone backstage was going nuts at how incredible they sounded. the band at this point was sorta not playing together; but they met up and decided what they were gonna play and it turned out magnificent!
