The story goes that in the early 2000's Tuomas had a bit of an existential crisis about his musical career. The singer of SA Tony Kakko (who is a good friend of Tuomas') took him on a hike in the Finnish north just talking and reflecting. Bottom line is: we might have Tony to thank for Nightwish still beeing around, just saying.. ;)

We have Tony to thank for "Once", then, since that came out only a few years after. What would we do without the magnificence that is "Ghost Love Score", "Higher than hope", "Creek Mary's Blood" and basically the whole album.

Yes and the keys are mimicing cembalo. Baroque era piano like instrument. Difference of sound comes from the fact that the piano wires aren't slammed with mallet but they are strung with tiny hooks. Gives that unique metalic sound.

Yessss. So glad to see a reactor of your caliber doing SA. Tony has an amazing voice and there are a couple tangents to explore with it - the Northern Kings super-group also ft Marko, Tony’s guest work with Nightwish. All good stuff. They’re a lot of fun to see live as well. Their more recent music doesn’t maintain this frenetic bpm but it’s still really good. They are great at epic soaring melody lines that I just love. Storm the Armada is one of my faves off the latest album. Suggestions I’m seeing from others are also all fantastic.

Tallulah, beautiful ballad by Sonata Artica. Lyrics:Remember when we used to look how sun set far away, And how you said "this is never over", I believed your every word and I quess you did too, But now you're saying "hey, let's think this over". You take my hand and pull me next to you, so close to you, I have a feeling you don't have the words, I found one for you, kiss your cheak, say bye, and walk away Don't look back cause I am crying. I remember little things, you hardly ever do, Tell me why, I don't know why it's over, I remember shooting stars, the walk we took that night, I hope your wish came true, mine betrayed me. You let my hand go and you fake a smile for me, I have a feeling you don't know what to do, I look deep in your eyes, hesitate a while, Why are you crying. Tallulah, It's easier to live alone than fear the time it's over, Whoa, Tallulah, Find the words and talk to me, oh, Tallulah, This could be heaven. I see you walking hand in hand with long-haired drummer of the band, In love with her or so it seems, he's dancing with my beauty queen, Don't even dare to say you hi, still swallowing the goodbye, But I know the feelings still alive, still alive. I lost my patience once, so do you punish me now, I'll always love you, no matter what you do, I'll win you back for me if you give me a chance, But there is one thing you must understand. Tallulah, It's easier to live alone than fear the time it's over,

Honestly, Chase, I'm a bit mind-blown about this. What a culture shock. That harpsichord is a very prevalent sound in nineties-style Nordic power metal. I'm pleasantly surprised you didn't instantly recognize it as a huge cliche. If you want to delve deeper into this phenomenon, might I recommend Stratovarius - Black Diamond. It's the quintessential power metal harpsichord epic. Not the first or the last, but easily the most iconic, a guaranteed ear worm that will stick with you for years, possibly for decades. :)

Ah, Sonata! Tony Kakko is an excellent singer and does great lyrics as well. The sound you were listening was probably Henrik Klingenberg's "Keytar", a shoulder-mounted controller keyboard, that is like a guitar but with the keys instead of chords or his synthesiser. It does sound great and is awesome on stage. Fullmoon, I Have a Right, Replica, their covers from Scorpions, Metallica and Helloween are great choices as well as some of their ballads (Shy, Tallulah, Last Drop Falls)

Sonata Arctica has some cool songs that really break the usual pattern. Like "Black Sheep" (full of triplets) or "The Wolves Die Young" (with very unusual chords). They also have a "Keeper of the Seven Keys"-level... not a song, but a musical piece... called "The Power of One".

Oh goodness you jumped in with Tank! That's pretty good to know! I have never personally heard Sonata Arctica, but having multiple personalities comes with a few interesting quirks in that *_one_* of us has heard *_some_* of their stuff, but not for at least 15 years. This should be interesting. Okay wow. I think I was hearing some changing tempo at the start but since you didn't pick up on it I might be hearing things again. The video definitely has not aged well, like many from that time. Love the 'clean' vocals and the mix. I feel like that first scream that made you and me both jump represents the wolf in this story, but I can't be sure since I have no clue what the lyrics are. Doesn't matter, it's a great song! I definitely heard more of 'the clang on the high end' as you put it. I was thinking piano but I'll trust your ears on harpsichord or organ. My goodness I gave up on those runs right about when you did. Absolutely smashed it out of the park. Also that's another thing, you're teaching music terms to someone who has no musical knowledge or skill! I know what a run is, and I can appreciate skill when I hear it, so thank you Chase! Have a Damn Good Day 🖖 -Jamie

Ahh Sonata Arctica. Used to be my favourite band till someone sent me a link to a misheard lyrics video for Wishmaster from a certain other Finnish band. Tony Kakko is friends with Toumas and has joined them on stage pre Marko ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-24tQIYmKFY0.html If it was not for Tony, Nightwish may not still be going today. While on a hiking trip with Toumas he was the one to convince him to carry on after Tarja.

That wonderful song is from the Masterpiece album Silence, from 2001!

Unlike most power metal bands Sonata Arctica have only one guitarist and tend to have the keyboards more to the "front" as a secondary "lead" instrument.

For what it's worth, the song and video were released in 2001, not 2009. And at the time it was quite a small band with limited budget, so we can only appreciate how great of a work they did with the music :)

What you hear is Henrik „Henkka“ Klingenberg playing his keytar or his keyboard. In the earlier days Henkka often used the harpsichord-sound... for me its like a „trademark“ of their earlier sound. He plays Hammond, Korg, Nord. Please listen to their song „ The power of one“ or „The ruins of my life“ 🙏🏻🙏🏻🤘🏻

Nightwish and Sonata Arctica are both favourite bands of mine. You'll find great things if you scan through their discography. Very talented musicians. And both bands share a history, grew together, became successful together and frequently colaborated and played together. Love your vid. Keep them coming

Excellent! Sonata Arctica: Great melodies at full speed, a lot of good songs too!, and creative sincopated rhythm breaks/combinations in the compositions, are interesting to analyze. Great musicians. (to Reckoning album, later is another story). Listen new vocal/orchestral version of Wolf and Raven.

The sound that you describe here as "like an organ, or a harpsichord thing" - definitely a harpsichord! I bring it up because this won't be the last time you hear harpsichord in melodic metal - it's an epic combination, so it's fun to recognize it and enjoy it :) It's also a historically interesting and important instrument: as the first keyboard instrument which was loud enough to play in a concert venue, it began the use of keyboards as a serious instrument. Furthermore - it was the immediate precursor to the piano. In fact, the name "piano" refers to the latter instrument's major advantage over the harpsichord: on a piano (short for "pianoforte" - Italian for "soft-loud"), you can play notes at different volumes. The piano was seen as such an improvement that the harpsichord went the way of the floppy disk - until the advent of historically informed performances, which brought back the harpsichord for performances of Baroque music. Here's Bach's concertos for harpsichord: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-wC_kuLSnuXk.html It just sounds good, but it also just sounds so Baroque. It's probably *because* it was superseded by a superior instrument, and faded away, that our emotional associations with the sound are inescapably tied to Baroque music (just as a pentatonic scale feels inescapably East Asian). That's probably why you latched onto it with such an "I know that vintage piano sound!" feeling. The bottom line for me: sure, the harpsichord does have that one big disadvantage - but it has such a lovely and distinctive timbre to it that I'm a huge fan of harpsichords in all sorts of unexpected places. (Interestingly, even though the harpsichord can now be easily played with varied dynamics via keyboards, it's nearly always played at a single volume - because a harpsichord clanging away with no dynamics and no rhythm is just such a thing.) You can hear full-on use of the harpsichord in the intro to Sonata Arctica's Unopened: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Gl1z5fuFnCg.html (I'd say it's safe to listen to: it's a good song, but unlikely to be one of the top 20 SA requests.)

I can tell you that power metal groups using a keyboard on a harpsichord or..... I forget the other instrument. ( Piano is struck strings. Harpsichord is plucked strings..I think there is a third..) is or used to be fairly common. (Stratovarius) Im guessing it is used because it feels like it adds to the guitar notes. Or could pass as another guitar to an unexpectant ear. Also I'll say good power metal is very enjoyable.

One of my favourites bands!.. I came up with they through Nightwish. Tuomas said they're an inspiration to him. So I take a look. I saw them live here in Buenos Aires twice. They sold out a traditional rock venue, that It's like the temple of rock, called Obras Stadium in 2008. Great performance live. Tony Kakko is a great frontman.

The song that got me into Sonata Arctica is Don't Say a Word. I feel like that one is much more typical of their work as a whole. Juliet is still my favorite song from them.

You could just listen to the song until the end at once... instead of stopping it over and over. You can do this later. But this song is really amazing, the first one I listened in this gender and made me fall in love with Sonata back in 2005

I really can't though. Far too much to unpack properly to do it that way. I'm happy with the formula but thank you.
