Actually, the original version (lyrics) is about being in an abusive relationship with another woman. The studio made the band change the lyrics and video to reference a heterosexual relationship if they wanted the song released. You can find live versions on RU-vid where Aimee sings the original lyrics.

The lead singer Amie Mann had a solo career. She was nominated for an Oscar but lost to Phill Collins for a song from the Disney animated Tarzan. She gives more in the studio version. Watch the official video to hear it.

A song about keeping voices down to a hush hush level, shouldn't be a heavy metal song. On the studio version, she uses a more whispy voice, which is perfect.

You just talked over one of the greatest women's empowerment songs of all time. For a story to be powerful, it must build from a little teapot, into a boiler on a steam locomotive, and then explode. This song does that and it does it well, and it was one of the first songs of an abused woman finally standing her ground and taking charge, and getting out of the emotional prison. Yes, the video explains it better, but this was right when they got their record contract and the album hadn't been released. Til Tuesday was a post punk band with a hint of New Wave, that went New Wave over the years. The lead singer, Aimee Mann left the band and went on to have a fantastic solo career as well. She plays bass, acoustic and electric guitar, mandolin, piano, drums most other stringed instruments. She studied string instruments , guitar and bass, and music theory and composition at Berkelee College of Musivc in her hometown of Boston Mass. She was nominated for a Grammy for her soundtrack for the movie Magnolia, and for the song Save Me from it. She won or was nominated for her albums, The Forgotten Arm, Fucking Smilers, and Mental Illness. She won Best Female Performance in the AVAs fore Voices Carry for best female performance, and best original song, among many other awards. Her catalogue is fantastic, and should be looked into. Tons of hits in there. She's the creator of the L.A. alternative style, called Stereogum, that artists such as Rufus Wainright and Fiona Apple became a part of with their styles. She's so much more influential than most imagine.

I moved to Boston in 1985 when this song was a hit. At the time, Boston cable had its own station that played music videos (this was the 1980s after all!) and this song was in heavy rotation ('Til Tuesday is from Boston). As others have mentioned, the video makes the message of the song clear. The singer is in a controlling/abusive relationship and her partner is concerned that others will find out about it hence him telling her to "keep it down now, voices carry." Toward the end of the song, he's more explicit as the singer is gaining her voice to speak out... "He said shut up... Oh God, can't you keep it down?" The lead vocalist is Aimee Mann who went on to have a successful solo career (and has appearedin movies and tv shows). I had the pleasure of seeing her live at an event filled with Boston artists of the era (this would have been sometime around 1990). She did perform this song.

Saw them in Tampa FL opening for Rick Springfield in the 80s. We stayed at the same hotel and ended up eating late with the drummer Michael. We had a great time that weekend. Have always been a fan! When first arrived at the hotel a guy was walking across the parking lot and we almost ran him over but come to find out he was part of the group! Will always have great memories!

Imagine if Britt wasn't blessed with a complete lack of awareness, and didn't go all squirrel, pursuing every thought that meandered by. Maybe she would have been able to take the time to listen to the lyric, and discover the depth of the writing, the intensity of the subject matter, and how Aimee Mann and Til Tuesday were able to raise some attention and bring a spotlight to the horrid abuse of women in intimate partnerships. We all talk about the "abusive narcissist" epidemic now, and yet here a lovely woman sits, with another lovely woman pleading for her to hear, and she talks about cavities. "Hush Hush" is the abuser demanding the victim maintain the illusion of perfection, while she is literally bursting with the desire to scream her pain from the rooftops.

Aimee Mann hated playing this song for decades. She finally played it a few years back on an interview show on YT. The best Til Tuesday song is ''Coming Up Close'' but Aimee's best work is her solo stuff, Especially the ''Magnolia" soundtrack.

The singer, Aimee Mann, was my main celebrity crush in high school. A local radio station 96 Rock used to have license plates with their logo and sometimes when they had a band/musical guest in station they would have what they called a "celebrity bolt-on" where the group/person would actually put the license plate on the front of your car. Til Tuesday did a bolt-on and I was able to briefly chat with Aimee as they put a plate on my car. Very cool now to think back on the moment.

You really should do studio versions as a first listen. The quality is always better and hits much harder. You can always go back and do live version of the songs you like afterwards. Just a suggestion.

Welcome to the world of '80s hair. One of the earliest rock versions of the "cool song, dark story" genre. Compared to something like "Ode to Billy Joe" or "First City" this is definitely lacking some oomph. But maybe singing a casual song about domestic violence is part of the message. This song has one of the best hooks ever. It feels perfect for a movie.

Stopping right before the chorus and without listening to the lyrics totally messed up the context and deep meaning in the song. The vibe is quiet most of the time on purpose. You also stopped when she was finally breaking out with the intense "He said shut up!". It is more apparent in the video but I think you missed out on this one.

It's a pretty 'airy' song, and her falsetto is not exactly strong. Singing is a funny thing - some words are harder to hit hard, carry out in sustain, or even enunciate in certain ranges, and I think that happens a lot in this song. She really soars on some of the notes/words, though, and that's the beauty of this song. Scared, emotive, subtle, restrained, vulnerable, strong, crying out... it's really an incredible work of art, and a perfect performance.

The producers and engineers played mportant roles in how a song sounded. Why are you bypassing all of that wonderful craftsmanship? Even as a kid going to concerts, I knew that the live sound would not equal the record. I think you're terrific. But there's a reason why radio stations don't play "live" music. Even the artists would be embarassed. :)

Your first reaction to a band or artist shouldn't be a live video. This is a decent live version but the studio version is amazing and the video would tell you what the song is about. I think you missed it.
