38 years after it's release I still listen to the entire album. I do the same with Wings of tomorrow and Out of this world. These three were, and still are, great to me.

If it wasn't for Europe, and this song, and iconic keyboards, a lot of European metal of all genres would not exist today. I would call it arena rock, in it's day. When it was released I was 18 years old lol
I love how open you are to trying absolutely every kind of music you can put your hands on. And then you take it even further by researching the historical significance of the music. So I would like to suggest something wonderful - Santana's Black Magic Woman ! But definitely watch Santana's debut at Woodstock !!
I liked this song. It's got great energy and a really good melody. It has a great hook. And, I was a pure hard rock guy all thru the 70's but mellowed in the 80's. They fall in the categories you said.
Kiss, ( I was made for loving you), is just the same and are loved and are played every where. I think it’s mostly envy. I think every band on earth wish they had wrote these songs Loved your reaction ❤️❤️..!
Erm, what? Gene Hoglan was never in Europe. His only connection to Europe is that he was in a band called Meldrum with the late former Phantom Blue guitarist Michelle Meldrum, who was Europe guitarist John Norum's wife.
I've always enjoyed this song, but my wife hates it. She says it's a blatant ripoff of Only Time Will Tell by Asia, although I don't see it. I remember when we both got smart phones for the first time and I changed her ringtone to this and she didn't yet know how to change it 😂 Id call her for no reason too. I just wanted her to hear The Final Countdown 🤣 🤣🤣 Incidentally, I'd classify this as arena rock. Definitely
Tell your wife that the synth riff that became "TFC" predates "Only time will tell", and the sources of inspiration for developing the rest of the song were in fact UFO's "Lights out" and Iron Maiden's "Run to the hills". You know, that galloping beat. Asia were actually no way near as big a deal here in Sweden as they were in the US, though we had obviously heard the name. I, however, know the song, but like you, I can hear none but the most fleeting similarities. The respective keyboard riffs are not alike at all.
The success of 'The Final Countdown' by Europe was a double-edged sword for the band's career in 1986... It made Europe international rock stars and the song (and album) was heard all over the world. Unfortunately, Europe could not follow up that record and it killed their career... To this day, they are still in demand for their 80's records. Originally called Force, Europe was formed in Sweden by Joey Tempest (lead vocals, real name Rolf Magnus Joakim Larsson) and started as a hard rock band... Europe released 2 albums in Sweden w/ John Norum (guitar), John Leven (bass) and Tony Reno (drums) - 'Europe' (1983) and 'Wings of Tomorrow' (1984) before they were signed internationally... singer Joey Tempest was praised for his high-octave vocal range on early songs like - 'Seven doors hotel' ... 'Scream of anger'... Mic Michaeli (keyboards) and Ian Haughland (drums) joined as Europe was transformed into an 80's 'hair' band. 'The Final Countdown' in 1986 marked a major shift towards a more arena rock sound... It sold 3x platinum in the US and was a major success worldwide... More hit singles followed - 'Rock the night'... 'Cherokee' ... the ballad 'Carrie'... 🔥🔥However, guitarist John Norum left the band complaining that Europe had gone into pop territory... He was replaced on tour by Kee Marcello (guitar) Under pressure to follow up 'The Final Countdown'... Europe released their 4th album 'Out of this world' in 1988... but the sound had changed w/ a new guitarist and fans who expected a 'Final Countdown Pt. 2' were disappointed... Despite the singles - 'Superstitious' ... 'Let the good times rock'... and the ballad 'Open your heart' (which was re-recorded from the '84 album 'Wings of tomorrow') ... the album only sold platinum in the US... Europe planned a massive world tour in '88 and planned to launch a US tour in 1989. But w/ the singles not having an impact, Europe saw their popularity rapidly fall by '89 and the US tour never happened. Europe tried again in 1991 w/ their 5th album 'Prisoners in paradise'... but the 90's grunge era decimated their popularity and the record failed commercially. Europe decided to split up in 1992 and focus on solo projects. In 2004, Europe reunited the 'Final Countdown' line-up (Tempest/ Norum / Leven/ Michaeli/ Haughland) and released the album 'Start from the dark'... and began touring again... but subsequent Europe records were far different from their 80's albums and they sold modestly... Their last 2 albums 'War of kings' (2015) and 'Walk the Earth' (2017) were musically closer to their classic sound and they did somewhat better in sales... They were able to tour the USA for the first time in decades... Europe are currently working on a new album.
Really good pop/rock song and they have a lot of them with great melodies. Great Swedish band. great singer great gitarrist and great musicians in general.
Great & underrated band U should defienetely check more of them & for smth more heavier I would suggest "Stormwind", "Wings of Tomorrow", "Seven Doors Hotel"
pardon me for saying it, but me and my friends, who were teenagers at the time, called it "butt rock"... lol. but i think i have heard it called "hair metal" most. i LOVE this song so thank you for the great reaction... even, though you have heard the hook from this before, watching you watch these in completeness reminds me of why i loved the songs the first time they came out.
I’ll go ahead and say it, I enjoy this whole album. Yeah, it’s cheesy af sometimes, but it’s some of the most underrated cheese you’ll find. Definitely a “guilty pleasure” of mine.
Patty-I remember when it first came out my nephews gave me the album for Christmas. They knew I liked it a lot. It really got me going with this song. I think they are an arena band. I still live this song and I'm 74 years old. Or should I say young.😂
Oh, Europe definitely belongs in the hard rock category. If you listen to their earlier or more recent material you'll hear it immediately. The sound on "The final countdown" album is mainly because of the producer, Kevin Elson of Journey fame. He turned the keyboards way up and the guitar way down, much to the chagrin of John Norum. I heard the whole album played live before it was even released, so I can testify that in their original form, the songs were a lot heavier. More along the lines of Deep Purple, Thin Lizzy, UFO and Rainbow - classic 70s hard rock bands which were what basically influenced the entire hard rock scene in early 80s' Sweden. (And that was a BIG scene.) OK, later on Judas Priest also added immensely to the mix. Of the scene as a whole, that is, not so much Europe the band.
Blender WHO???? never hear of them, This is an essential 80's classic that lives on today nearly 40 years later....I personally loved this song and album as do many people i know.
