The Beatles generally kept songs from their albums separate from their singles. They didn’t feel it was right to force their fans to buy a song twice. Singles were the songs radios stations played, kids bought, and eventually charted. Album tracks stayed on the albums and therefore were not intended to enter the charts. That’s why so many great Beatles songs did not go number one, though had they been released as singles no doubt would have.

A song about love. A regular Beatle message.

Another one of Paul's most beautiful songs ever. So smooth. When this was released in late '65, we couldn't believe it was the Beatles, but loved it.

My Mother was a 16 Year-old girl in 1964 when the Beatles were on 'The Ed Sullivan Show. She was a HUGE fan of the Beatles and of Paul McCartney in particular. When she died in 1999 I listened to this song OVER & OVER because, of coarse my Mothers name was MICHELLE! ❤to my Mother & the Fab Four!

This wasn't the first time they sang in a foreign language. They recorded I Want To Hold Your Hand and She Loves You in German.

This song is dear to my heart for the obvious reason ... my name is Michele. I've been serenaded with this song throughout my life from childhood in the 70s all the way up to last week 😊❤

John and Paul had a friend called Ivan Vaughan who had introduced them to each other. Ivan's wife Jan taught French and Paul consulted her for the lyrics. He asked her for a rhyme with Michelle and she suggested "ma belle" which mean "my beautiful"

Brother Drew - the best of luck to you for learning another language. Too many of us go abroad as "ugly Americans" and just assume that everyone speaks English. Some trivia for you - in the 1700s and into the 1800s, French was the language spoken in the Royal Courts of Russia, France and Great Britain. It was considered a much more sophisticated language, and was a usual part of the education of the upper crust in England. Queen Elizabeth, and I believe King Charles as well, were quite fluent in French. Bonne chance, mon ami!

It didn’t chart in the US because it was not released as a single here. It was just a cut on the album. But it did get radio airplay anyway. You had to buy the album though to own a copy for yourself.

UK schools mostly taught French so most postwar children could speak some French.

Ok. The Original song title is My Meshell. Yes spelled like this. That is how it was spelled on the albums. I named my daughter with this spelling because of this song😂❤❤irks me when they change the spelling on these videos.😢

It's not that it didn't do well in the United States, it was never released as a single in the United States. Peace

Michelle was not released as a single, it was on the Album "Rubber Soul" So the album would chart, but not each song on the album, Only singles and albums would be charting. That is why "Michelle" on its own didn't chart, because it was NOT released as a SINGLE, if it HAD been, it would certainly have charted.

Yes, Paul is singing in French. There are other bands that have French in songs as well. The band Rush, the song Circumstances Actually the guys in Rush started taking French lessons when they were on tour! Not your average rock band! Also, April Wine another Canadian band that had French in the song Just between you and me Canada has two official languages. French and English so not so surprising in some ways to find French in the music. Paul McCartney singing in French is a first. Cheers

Yeah only Paul can sing that pretty. Rubber Soul is one massive hit after another. I'd estimate there would have been 4-5 #1 songs minimum had they released them all over time as singles. I count this as one of those, along with Drive My Car, Nowhere Man, Girl, and In My Life. I'm not even saying those are the best songs on the album...just that I could see them as #1 hits. Isn't it funny to find out how many song lyrics were just crafted to sound good and don't really have any personal meaning for the writer?

Someone else gave the French to Paul for the song. Michelle is no one; Paul had this song for years, and used it mainly to "make" girls. It is a mistake to assume that songs are about actual people or even events.

John reminded Paul how he (Paul) would sometimes pretend to be a brooding french guy in the corner at clubs they played. Paul got a lot of chicks. I'm loving your Beatles reactions. You are thoughtful. You are precisely correct about The Beatles' collective playfulness and trying anything. They have no genre. They did all genres of music better than anyone else. So glad I found your channel. Its enough to make a 60 Gringo living on a tropical island in the middle of Nicaragua like me to smile. You are much appreciated. Thanks, kiddo!
