When Mel Tillis sings, it's the only time he doesn't stutter. But when he talks, he has a bad stuttering problem.

There's an apparently-true story of a night when Mel was sleeping in a hotel room with two other singers when somebody opened the window from outside and started to climb in. It woke Mel, but his stutter prevented him from warning his roommates until he SANG it out. Turns out the intruder was Johnny Paycheck. I've always taken 'Coca-Cola Cowboy' to mean a kind of generic icon, like the Coca-Cola Santa Clauses that show up around the holidays. She's saying he looks like a stereotypical image of a cowboy.

Mel Tillis, great singer/songwriter. He wrote, "ruby, don't take your love to town." Sung by Kenny Rogers.

You should check out his daughter, Pam Tillis. She had several hits in the early 90’s like “Maybe it was Memphis” and “Sweetheart’s Dance”

Surprised you found Merle but very pleased. How about another good one. Johnny Paycheck. Yes, yes, we know about "Take This Job and Shove It." But he's got some incredible songs. For instance, "The Only Hell My Mama Ever Raised." Or, "Slide Off of Your Satin Sheets." But the best may be, "Old Violin."

Mel didn't get the song when he heard the demo and he didn't want to record it. But he had to, for the movie. Then the song went to #1 and he said he started to like it.

A couple of others worth a listen to from Mel, "I Got the Hoss (She Got the Saddle)" and " Good Woman Blues". Mel Tillis was in the movie "Cannonball Run", a Burt Reynolds movie, a fictitious account of a cross country illegal race.

OMG. I guess I'm old now. But Robert Redford was once the top dude in the country. Good looking like Brad Pitt, but a much better actor. Some day people will say, who was Brad Pitt or who was Taylor Swift. That's how it goes...
