Never heard a reaction artist mention this song as possibly being racist. That's our society we live in today..... everything and everybody is racist. The power of the lying media.

Yes, the first verse was a reference to a muzzle loaded musket "Brown Bess," speaking about a wild shot that was a miss. 2nd verse could be your drug or other vice of choice that was always ready and endswith a verse about a woman.

The Brown Bess replaced the Black Betty shortly before The War for American Independence.

A lot of folks took it as racist even though the guy didn't mean it that way but sometimes when you're a white dude you don't understand what people are going to take as racist, sometimes we don't even think about it, some of us are trying to be better though

This isnt about a woman. It's about a e and the Pistol that was made after it. Black Betty is the Musket. But the "child" that it had was the pistol. Prior to the “Brown Bess”, stocks were painted black.

Look...in the South, they can appreciate a military marching song, even if it's from team Britain. We also love Yankee Doodle Dandy, which is a song about how we are gay, and French-like. If it's a jam, Americans can dig it...even if it's trashing us.

This song was written by Lead Belly (a black man), somewhere around 1910, so no it isn't a racist song. Ram Jam just rock it out.

The origins of this song goes back around the time of the settlement of the colonies of America. It was a marching cadence in the British Army.

From here, you need some good advice from the Georgia Satellites. The song is KEEP YOUR HANDS TO YOURSELF. The message is funny, catchy, and clear.

5:31- A lot of the music back then was "naughty".LOL, both soul and rock genres alike. We were having more sex than a porno movie, and the bands sure had a big hand in that. Examples: I gotcha ( Joe Tex), :Let's get it On ( Marving Gaye) Super Freak ( Rick James), and then the rockers? Feel like makin' love ( Bad Company) Black Dog, ( Led Zepplin) Horizontal Bop ( Bob Seeger) etc, etc. Fun reactions and great pick!

The term Black Betty is generally thought to be referring to a bull whip used on slaves and prisoners, however other theories suggest Black Betty was a penitentiary wagon or a liquor bottle. The song was written in 1933 ish.

I get the historical stuff but I think people are over analyzing this. I think its a song about a white person who really likes a black person. Which wasn’t that common when this song came out.

Black Betty is a nickname given to a bottle of whiskey. Original song is credited to Lead Belly who was an Afro-American. Don't listen to the haters. You don't know something until you know it. (Bonus comment #4 for today). Love you guys

I grew up in this era. We understood a Black Betty, to be an illegal drug you could get on the streets. Obviously the song goes back I think to the 1920s.
