FIRST TIME REACTION TO SHINee Replay, Hard & Lucifer M/V's & Sherlock Live

Replay is their debut song in 2008. The MV was reuploaded on another SM YT channel, but it's still from 2008. They had an age ranging from 14 to 18 years old, they were really young... Taemin's vocal cords were immature and he would not risk ruining his voice. Anyway, his members Onew and Jonghyun tutored him, especially Jonghyun. A couple of years after, he was able to sing very well. A huge compliment to "Lucifer", since it's from 2010 and not 2012-2013 :-)

Actually, when they say the 8th album, that means the 8th full Korean, studio album; not albums total. SHINee had been one of the most prolific groups in Kpop. Their total number includes both their Korean and Japanese (they are bilingual) full albums, mini-albums, Eps, repackaged albums, OSTs, and individual solo albums. They often released two albums of some sort each year -- one Korean and one Japanese. This is why they have such a HUGE discography over the span of now 16 years. As with much of their music, within this MV SHINee is referencing their past MVs, individual solo work, as well as a smattering of SuperM -- because of 1) Taemin and 2) SM Universe (Kwangya) as indicated by the foreshadowing and funky tone at the end of the MV. However, I also think this MV represents a very bold statement from SHINee that is synonymous with Taemin's equally bold rhetoric from his 2021 song/MV, "Advice". Therefore, the most prominent symbolism I see in this MV is harkening back to "Advice" (the central figures being the Piano, Taemin's painted hands, and the generally aggressive rhetoric) but there are others as well. Again, with the piano, we see it is initially represented in a "Circle" (Onew's latest title track from his album with the same name) which also symbolizes eternity. The blue water gushing from the piano and the waves crashing into Onew are reminiscent of "Atlantis", SHINee's 2021 repackaged album. We are reminded of Taemin's 2020 "Criminal" with the figures in white pressing against a screen in the background of Taemin's rap and the reference to "criminal" in the chorus. The pristine black & white aesthetic of the beginning of the MV is similar to the middle of Taemin's "Criminal". The brothers being dragged down into the piano itself, harkens back to Taemin in the "underground hellish pit of lava in "Criminal". Key's "Hate That" MV is represented by Minho standing on the same rocky outcropping where Key and Taeyeon were perched in the same lighting and scenery. The animation is the same style as Onew's collab with Punch for their MV, "Way". Minho is seen absorbing all the light and turning into a flame reflecting his early SHINee nickname of "flaming charisma" due to his fiery passion and extreme competitiveness. It's like a trip down memory lane. We also have Key referencing an astra (star/not the car) in the lyrics. This could be a reference to Jonghyun, as he is also referred to as a "Diamond" in the sky, and the brothers will often point or look up toward their brother in the sky when singing, as was the case in the album's pre-release MV, "The Feeling".

"Sherlock" (2012): This is perhaps one of the most beloved SHINee songs, and this performance in particular the most iconic. This is why SHINee are called the "Princes of Kpop" and live performance kings. So many other groups that came after them patterned their performances after SHINee, like EXO, NCT, and BTS, to name a few. SHINee was the performance standard and model from the time they debuted, mostly due to their ability to sing live while performing such strenuous choreos. This performance was part of their opening for their SWC IV concert in Tokyo Dome. The complete set included four songs: "Sherlock", "SHINe", "Stranger", and "Picasso". It was 17:22 minutes of non-stop, high octane singing and dancing -- one complete song blending into the next without missing a beat. The brothers in order of singing: Key, Minho, Taemin, Jonghyun, then some bros. repeat and lastly Onew. "Sherlock" was an instant hit when it came out in 2012 and made the perfect anthem song, as you said. It was the very first hybrid song in Kpop, comprised of SHINee's b-side songs, "Clue" and "Note". The choreo is famous because 1) it was the -- and still is to my knowledge -- the most expensive choreo every paid for by SM. They have never released exactly how much it cost. 2) it was choreographed by Tony Testa, Michael Jackson's choreographer for his "This Is It" tour, and 3) it replaced "Lucifer" as the most difficult Kpop choreo at the time. I was dying laughing at your reaction to their 'Lucifer' hairstyles 🤣 Idc what anyone says, Key rocked that half-shaved head! Taemin's tho.... that was a crime 😭 That song is iconic for so many reasons though which I've seen others have told you. It was also the first SHINee song I had ever heard so ofc it has a very special place in my heart ❤️ I don't know if anyone said it or not yet but for that 'Sherlock performance those awesome outfits were designed by Key! What I love about the videos you chose is how well they showcase SHINee's immense versatility and growth over the years ❤ I have to say though, 'Hard' really isn't my cup of tea but they still nailed that concept and executed it flawlessly. It could still grow on me one day but idk lol.

Replay is the best debut in kpop, and as for Lucifer, you will probably like it over time, especially when you see the live performances, the more you listen to it, the more you like it.

"Lucifer" (2010): The famous dance practice for this song ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-ovztfpWPo5M.html ) is what launched the trend for other groups to post their dance practices, making it almost a requirement now. At that time, in 2010, SHINee's complex synchronicity and seamless blending of several different dance styles (including tutting) made "Lucifer" the most innovative and difficult choreo in Kpop. That designation would be toppled by another SHINee song, "Sherlock". If you watch the dance practice, BEWARE of Taemin's psychedelic, zebra-stripped shirt. It will mess with your eyes. Brothers in order of appearance: Taemin (long hair extensions); Minho (very short, black hair); Jonghyun (spiky, black hair); Onew (smooth, sleek, brownish hair); Key (half-shaved hair).

Fun fact: Lucifer was recently named #16 by Rolling Stones on their list of the 100 Greatest Songs in the History of Korean Music. Also, the Dance Practice for LUCIFER is what kickstarted dance practices being popular. Besides being at the iconic SM cloud-backed practice room, there’s Taemin’s iconic trippy t-shirt and the toilet paper marker. LOL. Lucifer was the first time SHINee was given significant input into the creative direction of their album, from music to styling. Obviously, they did well-they helped change the public’s perception of idols and brought KPOP even further into the global market. In fact, it charted on Billboard's World Digital Song Sales chart for 57 weeks. Another fun fact about “Lucifer” - it was played during a fight scene in the 13th episode of the third season of the TV series Lucifer: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE--LDFcq49YFQ.html (a cut of the scene). For a really awesome through-the-years storyline, you should watch “Replay”, followed by “Love Sick”, then “Marry You” - a story arc 13 years in the making. Replay, or Noona Neomu Yeppeo (Noona, You’re So Pretty) starts it off with lyrics like “Noona is so pretty…you are my life’s everything…I don’t want you to be pressured…I replay replay replay as the end approaches.” Seven years later, SHINee came out with the song Love Sick: “You were so pretty…you are still my life’s everything…my woman…I am your happy man.” Then, six years afterwards in 2021, came Marry You where our boy became a man and proposes: “You are still pretty to me…my heart stops every time I see you…I need a doctor for this incurable disease I’m still lovesick…you are still my life’s everything my love.” Since you’ve seen their debut MV of Replay, I’d like to recommend an iconic live performance: “Replay” (orig 2008, video 2015) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-4o_5w3E_yws.htmlsi=ws039F6HlY6tvElh For context, the emotional ending had to do with Shawol’s special event: the signs said “Let’s stay like this for a long time,” which made a pun with the numbers 5&2, which sounds O and Ee … it’s a reference to their debut 5/25.
