Spring Day is one of the hardest songs in the BTS catalog. Italian Army went so far as traveling to Korea and interviewing the families and making sure she understood things. The tragedy is very tied to the MV just the very direct references to Omelas (which is a short story and very very pointed about it’s allegory) and Snow Piercer. However due to the political climate in Korea BTS was in a political position that needed subtly so they were as blunt as they felt they could be. They also have a strong history of political and social commentary songs (one directly calling out a politician in the Corrupt Park administration who called the people “dogs and pigs” and they not only made a song about it but performed it on live TV. This has led to much of why the Korean media infamously ignores or downplays BTS and the way the govt has treated their enlistment issues. Corruption in Korea is sadly not new and could potentially be linked to the 150 people who died on Halloween weekend in a crowd crush last week but they also have some of the strongest non violent social protests in the world. The govt there can really blacklist artists and BTS really walked a line with this one as they have never been shy from doing. The song itself has been so important to Korean Army they have kept it charting in the top 100 for 5+ years. Anytime a tragedy happens people sing this as a song of mourning but also hope. For myself the song helped me enormously when I lost both we husband’s parents last year and is bittersweet and beautiful. The MV just as a visual piece of art is stunning and we should really not forget about these sort of events so we can learn and it’s sad how common coverups are globally. There is a lot online if you want to learn more about Sewol. Thank you for learning about this.

First, as a Korean, I remember the Korean fans when this song was first released. We could know what this song was about without any contextual explanation. But we wouldn't convinced and refrained from spreading it. Because it was a very big thing for the president to come down in Korea. This song was released in February 2017. At that time, there were protests across the country that the president should step down, and the controversy over the Sewol ferry accident was the hottest. In particular, idol singers could face a backlash using these subject. However, due to an accident that occurred in 2014, BTS made another donation for victims just before the release of this song. The member's official position of this song was 'about the friend I miss', but we could infer it.The reason it could not be clearly stated was because the conflict was serious. (Korea is such a country) Anyway, in March 2017, a month after the release of the song "After the cold winter, spring comes, and waiting for the next morning again." The president is dismissed by the Constitution.

Music has the effect of making the personal appreciation of the creator sound as if it were his or her own story to the listeners. So, no matter what particular source there is, I think that songs that can be heard in different interpretations remain for a very long time. I think this song is very accurate for such a song.

This information is for you... I want to share with you a comment to another reactor from a survivor of the Sewol disaster.. I would like you to hear from him just how BTS has healed him through this song and the messages they have: His name is Chilo Abellon - and this is his public comment in full - unedited - from 18 months ago.......... "I remembered when they rescuing us its so tragic when you see your classmates/friends stuck asking and hearing them scream for help, the screaming and voices of people asking for help while the ships is sinking the scream slowly vanished. When you can’t help them because the water got deeper and deeper while they rescue us slowly. The time that i got rescued only 3 of us survived, my two classmates and i in our and my other classmates stuck in the ships hoping they’re still alive but when the time i heard the news that they’re all gone. It slowly sinking in that all my friends and the other class are gone and will never comeback. I feel guilty when I survived, I’m thinking am i lucky? Or is it not right that i was alive and not them? Do i deserve to live?. Feeling depressed, having suicidal thoughts, every night you can’t sleep because i keep hearing those scream a scream people needing a help but you can’t because your weak and got broken bones. Everything time I struggled to see what life is all about, thinking what if all of my friends survived and they with me survived. It would be dream to see that happening. I struggled to make a good life that i can be proud of because of that incident happened but when i found out about BTS my life changed me because of their music they changed my life the way that i can be proud of and I started loving myself by little by little and finally the day I realize life is so short and the incident happened 7years ago impacted my life to be a better person and all of our hardships are just a big task for us to make them done and the outcome will be 100times better the incident happened 7years ago thought me so many things. The biggest one is don’t forget they might be gone but don’t forget them put them on your heart and like life all of your hardship and your mistakes will not lose or fail you it’s always a win win situation because we always learn from them. Spring day is my number 1 fav song of BTS because I reminisce the things happened 7years ago while watching the mv and it always help me to keep going in life and do not give up on things that i want to achieve - My name is Chilo one of the survivors of the sewol ferry incident." I truly hope he does not mind me passing on his public comment - but this best shows the power of BTS message. The worst thing about the disaster - the captain and crew fled the ship the morning 9.35 - the ferry did not sink until the night - they left the warning to not move playing on a loop through the ship. Only the children that disobeyed the warning survived. The others drowned as they were so ingrained to listen to authority. The civilian boats that attempted to rescue people were stopped by the coast guard as people would discover the boat was overloaded. Parents on the shore were receiving desperate calls and texts from their children begging for help. And the coastguard did nothing. The only rescue the coastguard made that day was the captain and crew... The people that got rescued were rescued by fishing vessels that got there first before they were stopped...3 years the ferry lay at the bottom as the Govt would not raise it for fear of discovering he truth.... They found video footage taken on mobile phones that were recovered of children wishing their families goodbye. One of the civilian rescue divers later committed suicide after having to recover so many childrens bodies knowing that he could have saved them but was forcibly stopped. As a parent I could not comprehend having to live through such a thing. Horrific that your own goverment would perpetrate and then cover up such a incident... jailing dissenters. It was proven that there were high officials with financial interests in the ferry. The president colluded with them to bury the truth and hamper investigations... 10000 people put on a Govt blacklist for protesting. BTS went and paid respects to the parents of the victims when the tragedy occured. No Cameras - No fanfair - just doing what was right...They also donated approx $100,000 (that year they only earnt $300,000 - they gave 1/3 of their earnings) to help the parents in their fight for justice.... We only found out about the donation years later as one of the parents was sick of all the hatred BTS was always getting and wanted others to know just how decent they are. The MV, The album cover, The choreography all relate back to the Sewol. But..... The song is itself about missing anyone you love and are separated from. They have since been singing Spring Day during the panademic as the world is was longing for a spring day. Spring Day is still in the Korean music (Melon and Gaon) top 100 charts to this day Sorry this is so long - but I really wanted to pass his comment and information to you relating to your Spring Day Explained video.... Thank you for sharing your journey, and helping to spread BTS message.. You are a really nice person. Sending greetings from Australia..... BORAHAE💜 #WeNeverWalkAlone

In a word, yes, I believe most of this vid. The song itself is about loss/grief, not tragedy related, necessarily. The MV, however, is pretty direct in so many of these details that relate. We know BTS stands up for what they believe, they could have gotten in a lot of trouble, they were not as big as now. Even the donations were quiet, when press asked, it was 'a private matter, separate from the company'. They had to be careful not to say things outright. Given the level of details, backstories, & history in SO MANY of their Music Videos; it's a work of creative genius. I'm sure they were not responsible for ALL the details, but they have awesome staff to help. There's minor things I am not sure of, and a couple she misses (the "birthday" scene mirrors one from Snowpiercer-a movie with strict social hierarchy & rebellion of the poor, by the banned Korean director); & the match scene is similar to "The Little Match Girl" story, where when she lights a match, her dead loved ones appear.) Too many things to be coincidence, esp knowing their care & level of detail. Spring Day become a cultural touchstone there, & hasn't left the charts since released. This further speaks for how precious the Korean people hold it & the courage/comfort of the video. BTS are good people, it's why we love them. The ferry was overloaded by 3x, ballast removed to increase cargo mass, making it top heavy. Lots of different places the govt/officials screwed up. The pres was impeached & jailed over this. Unfortunately, another preventable tragedy happened in Seoul over Halloween, & almost 160 young people (many same generation as Sewol) were killed in an awful crowd crush. Again, govt missed many opportunities to prevent it. It's heartbreaking. This new (very conservative) pres may end up like last one. After understanding the ferry incident, the already emotional song becomes even more so; especially w/ their emotion-filled voices! 💔💜

Just be a bit careful with your facts. The president never blacklisted BTS. After she was impeached, there was a long list of people her government wanted to blacklist, which included BTS amongst lots of other idols and celebrities. It was also more likely to do with their anti-establishment ideas rather than Spring Day, which was never confirmed by BTS to be about the Sewol Ferry Tragedy. BTS were however VERY anti-establishment and proudly spoke against the president and her government in general, which is more likely the reason they were on that list.

Most BTS songs have multiple meanings and certainly one of the meanings of Spring Day is just overcoming loss and waiting through a harsh 'winter' to get to an eventual 'spring'. I thought I had read that RM confirmed recently that the song was also written about the Sewol ferry, but now I can't find that quote from him. I believe that it was one of the intended meanings, from the underwater sonar sound in the song, the reference to Snowpiercer in the lyrics, which is a story about a strict class system and oppression, and things in the video like the Omelas reference and the yellow ribbons. Some things are just on the nose. I would imagine if it was meant to be about Sewol, they might not come out and say it directly since many artists before were punished by the government for commenting on the subject. Whether or not it was intended, it certainly became linked with it in the minds of the public and has been taken up as a symbol. It has been in the charts in Korea ever since it came out. One song in the top 100 for 5-6 years. This is why it is called the Queen.

The song was written while rm was thinking of friends he missed. The mv is about the sewol. The Italian ARMY who created this even met with the families of some of the victims. Thank you for watching the explanation. She did an amazing job! There's a few things that she didn't touch on from the mv but this is def the best explanation of spring day mv 💜 oh, keep in mind, that when BTS and big hit donated , that was a lot for them back then. Idk the exact figures but I saw another army mention on another reactor's reaction to this, that their donation equaled about ⅓ of the $ they made that year or something, idr exactly but I'm sure someone here knows. I just know it wasn't easy for them to do it back then eta: the sewol was only cleared to carry a certain amount of weight. The ship was modified to carry exponentially more weight. President Park and other government officials owned either the ship, or stock, sry idr exactly. But it was very overloaded, it sank because of it, & the coast guard etc didn't want the truth coming out because obvs they'd look really bad. President Park stayed in her room until 10 am when communication on the ship stopped. Her aides were incompetent, and there was a lot of miscommunication when clear communication was imperative coupled with the illegal mods and government owning stock or whatever, was a recipe for disaster. President Park was impeached, lot of people were arrested, and I think the captain, or someone like that, commuted suicide afterwards. Always share your ideas, that's why we're here! 🙂💜 Btw, hearing this live with 60k people singing "oh ooh oh, oh ooh oh, oh oh oh ohhh" is a truly magical experience!

Being propelled into world forums is one of the reasons the group decided to scale back this year. Check out the recent RM & Pharell interview - RM acknowledged being overwhelmed by the responsibility of social influence, and the need to stop and reflect. People questioned why a boy band would be invited to the UN. BTS understands they do not have the credentials of world leaders. They know they're being used as a shiny object to draw attention, and are willing to be used as such when the causes align with their values. You're 100% right about the dangers of influence. We support BTS because despite all hardships, they conduct themselves with respect and kindness. I look to them when I'm disgusted by the many toxic influencers online. When I just hate the world, BTS/ARMY remind me there is still good out there. 💜

BTS have never been afraid to buck the system. Their debut was all about the youth having no dreams or aspirations, they go to school like robots and try to get to the best school, so they can have a good job. Their songs Am I Wring and Go Go are also political. Yes, the song itself was not about the tragedy, but the video seems very much linked to the tragedy. The song itself has been on the Korean Charts since it debut. It’s the longest charting song in Korean chart. It’s special. I personally love this song because it helped me get over a personal loss. It’s a special song.

I had watched the actual documentary and live feed of this disaster. The boat had many modifications done that it was not designed to handle all in the name of making more money carrying more than it should. Then the captain who should stay with the ship is one of the first to bail and they told the kids to stay. There just so much corruption. The person who created this documentary went to korea and visited the families of the victims. The song itself had nothing to do with the ferry incident it was about missing friends which RM has stated however the video has too many Easter eggs to not have something to do with it. BTS started off as rookies rebellion against school systems and society pressure on the youth and social and economic injustice its all written in thier lyrics. I find starting from the beginning and moving forward following there journey makes you appreciate them so much more. I recommend the rise of bangtan series it really starts from before thier debut.

The intro by Taylor is really popular right now but by far I prefer the ones by Asian Theory and xCeleste. What brings me joy with Spring Day is that the captain and crew who got out first, they were pretty much the only ones rescued, there was a lot of coverage by CNN and the BBC actually, I watched a crapton of clips. Anyway, it brings me joy that they're all serving life sentences and the president was impeached. A few even committed suicide over the guilt of leaving 300 kids to drown. As far as I know this song is still on the charts in Korea today people are incredibly emotionally attached to it. Interpreting the MV is definitely subjective but I think the clues are pretty clear. There are a lot of references to Spring Day in Yet to Come to watch for when you do that one. So yep, I'd say the video is a nod to Sewol, the song itself I'd say is about loss and grief in general. 💜🙏
@czak598
@czak598 Год назад
I think the song is about loss of a friend and is broad and open to cover many situations of loss and grief but the music video has too many on the nose references to not be tied into the ferry tragedy. Then one other piece of the puzzle is the live performance of this song. the choreography is a beautiful interpretive dance which has many moves which mimics waves and they make a formation of a ship in the choreography. There is a part in the choreography which Jimin seems like he is being pulled away and jhope reaches for him but is not able to grasp him. The boys have never confirmed that the MV is about the Sewol, only that it is about a sad event. There is a great documentary by the New Yorker about the Sewol tragedy if you like documentaries.

The song itself is to comfort people who are missing their friend or loved one, it also aims to comfort victims, Yoongi and RM who wrote the lyrics wrote about their own past friends in their rap parts. They wanted to bring hope and comfort with the song. With the MV they wanted to make a stance, this explanation video was pretty accurate and the music video and song did help to further the political movement and bring awareness at the time. In Korea this song is very loved, it has never left the top 100 on the Korean charts since release, and remains in the top 50 most of the time, surging up to top 5 every spring. That really shows how much Koreans love this song.

yes everything in here is true and like many armys have said bts are DIFFERENT they speak on unspoken topics and are not afraid of authority or people in power they will always speak up. this is why the western industry has blocked them and why the korean industry tried to block them. all of bts success is from armys through word of mouth because the industry does not like how honest and real they are. this is why you may not hear them on the radio often besides the language not being english. bts also around the same time of spring day being released performed a protest song on live television which they couldve gotten blacklisted for as well as for spring day. if the president didnt get impeached bts probably wouldve been on the blacklist mentioned in this video. bts and their producer both confirmed that this was the meaning on the song/music video as recent as 2020. bts have many songs like this that speak on deep issues in korean society. the victims families also said in a interview that they were very thankful for bts contribution as bts were rookies in 2014 so they did not have much money yet they still donated and visited with the families in person. the families said they always pray for bts safety since theyre one of the artists to always speak up. i get your hesitance to believe things but this is why bts is a anomaly the only comparisons i can think of thats somewhat close ethically is rage against the machine , 2pac & Seo Tai ji the first "kpop" group i personally dont consider them or bts as kpop but its no coincidence that the first group passed the torch to bts even though many groups came before bts. its cause theyre very similar they all speak/spoke on social issues and stood up when many dont regardless of the risks.

The reality is that the background of BTS's work is very extensive and complex. Although you have already traveled a little way knowing BTS, you still have a long way to go. Since 2015 BTS has been developing two conceptual themes, the first, everything related to the Bangtan Universe BU, which is a storyline that develops through MVs, shortfilms, notes, webtoon, game, etc. And the second is everything related to psychology. This whole concept is based on Jung's Psychology, specifically the Archetypes according to Carl Jung and in turn with some related literature such as -Demian by Hermann Hesse- and -Map of the Soul by Murray Stein-. There are other references such as the movie Snowpiercer or the book Omelas for Spring day but also in many MVs there are references to works of art. BTS uses a lot of symbology in their visual material and much of their work is interconnected. That's why in the fandom there is a saying: "BTS is for intellectuals", it takes a lot of time, research, analysis and reading to understand the work of BTS.

BTS is not shy to comment or make music about political/economic issues in korea or the world. Spring Day is no exception. Spring Day, a very creative and subtle way for Korean army to grief and mourn over the tragedy of the Sewol fairy sinking back in 2017. Such a dark time, the whole country was in shock. Army refers to this song as the "Queen" because it has been charting on Korean charts for *over* 5 years! I'm so glad you reacted to this, even international fans who weren't present, or are from korea, mourn with Koreans because of how much it touched their hearts. It truly is a tear-jerker once you get the meaning and inspiration for the song down, even the MV itself. Thank you for the reaction 💜

The things that resonate with me are pretty trackable, like the book Omelas based on a utopian society that thrives on the suffering of a child, sacrificing one for the many. Also the Snowpiercer reference, that is actually in the lyrics. There is a Korean tale about someone lighting a match so their loved ones would appear. The significance of the shoes was everywhere. There is some debate about the yellow ribbons as is also represents suicide, but then they are linked with the survivors of the UK tragedy who acknowledged the Sewol tragedy. I think most of it is true. The song has never left the charts in Korea so it resonates with many people. There is another explanation video that explains as well which was easier to follow for some.

I broke down my comments into two parts since they are so long! I apologize in advance. Comment Part One: First, I wanted to say that I appreciate your skeptical mind. We should question everything, especially sources. When I started in college, Wikipedia was just getting started and you had to learn that with access to easy information is that you also have access to easy disinformation. This the rise of the internet, people can consume things that interest them (like learning all about BTS), and we can meet like-minded people as well as form a community around those interest. However, the dark side of this is that you can find anything on the internet from fake news to forming massive cults around certain “unalienable” beliefs. I think that it’s sad that we have forgotten the words of Sherlock Holmes (aka Arthur C. Doyle) “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.” To really date myself, I think we all need to rewatch the X-files and see that the “truth is out there”! If you wish to learn more about the Sewol tragedy, there are documentaries and movies done about it. One is by PBS. One should always research and come to their own conclusions. I apologize for being a bit didactic, but I get excited when I see people think. We don’t do that enough nowadays.

Great video. Heavy subject, but a great song with the message that Spring Will Come - even after tragic loss. The MV has references/symbolism of the ferry accident, the movie Snowpiercer and the book, Omelas. The common link in each one is a society's that benefits at the expense of the youth. Those who benefit don't care and others look away and demanding accountability requires courage. Uvalde, TX shooting is another similar incident. BTS has courageously spoke up for those who are marginalized and mistreated. Reason #999,999,999 why I love them! Whew! On to Carpool Karaoke! YAY!

Comment Part Two: Second, I am going to jump on the bandwagon of recommending introduction videos for you to do. I personally really like “The Most Beautiful Life Goes On” by Rice Squad (formerly called the Asian Theory). I really like this one because it focuses on the group more than the individual members and it was last updated right after the Grammy’s. (They will probably update it early next year with regards to their enlistment and pursuit of solo projects). I think that it’s a good starting off point and it’s digestible since they narrated it. The Rise of Bangtan is probably the absolute best series out there made by a fan (and only using fair use material), but each episode is 30 minutes long (not including deleted and extra scenes). However, it’s done so well that the journalist that interviewed BTS for Rolling Stone used it as part of his research. (I personally think that HYBE should hire her to be their official documentarian). Everyone has already recommended the Taylor series, but I’ll also throw out there xCelestes intro to BTS and intro to ARMY videos. I actually really like that she made a video about the fandom and why people from all over the spectrum love BTS. Both videos are on the shorter sides. All are different and you really can’t go wrong with any. Good luck and Godspeed! Peace.

Hey, thank you so much for watching all the context. All the comments already explain so much, but I want to add 3 things. 1- One of the composers of the song was in a girl group before, and between the time of the accident and the release of spring day, her group also made a song about the tragedy,, which is an indication of the depth of the song and its meaning. Plus, Kpop is known for the layers in the songs, videos, and meanings. 2- BangPD (the founder of bighit and BTS) graduated from Seoul National University with a major in Aesthetics. I believe he has a huge influence on all the details in BTS's visual work. Giving more interpretation than what the eye can see. 3- The synergy between ARMY and BTS goes beyond the idol and fan relationship, I believe the fandom builds with bts the meaning of everything, with theories and interpretation, and bringing awareness for worlds problems and suffering is what ARMY does best, so, at the end of the day, spring day music gives a "never forget" meaning not only for this tragedy but for our own lives as well.

Thanks for checking this out. There's never been a single time that i haven't teared up, broken into pieces while listening to this song. Italian ARMY definitely did her in-person research and I agree with all her findings except the birthday scene. One thing I'd like to clarify though is that she's talking about the mv, not the song as such. The guys have said that the song is about grief and missing loved ones in a more general sense which is also why Spring Day has become the symbol of BTS and ARMY missing each other during the pandemic which again is why they sang it in the Tiny Desk Home Concert. It's still charting in South Korea to this day btw, which is why it was given the Queen title. The guys take riscs but they're clever about it. RM said the song came from him missing his friends from before he joined BigHit - they were going to university, socializing, dating, all things RM couldn't do because of his dream to be a music artist Suga's lyrics are also about missing a friend, one he had been close to from childhood back home in Daegu. But after he moved to Seoul to fulfill his own dream and joined BTS, his friend fell in with a bad crowd, started doing drugs, and ended up in jail. Suga also wrote about his feelings regarding this friend on his 2020 second solo mixtape "D-2" in the song "Dear My Friend" But the MV for Spring Day is definitely about the Sewol Ferry disaster, even though the song is more generally a song about loss and grief

Last April was the 8th anniversary of the Sewol ferry disaster. On a cold winter day, I took a candle and took to the streets with my young daughters, hoping to uncover the truth and punish those responsible. Many Koreans were depressed and traumatized for a long time because of the disaster. But they were just sad or angry and couldn't stay still. I went out on the streets for several months until spring, raising my voice and crying out to reveal the truth of the disaster. At that time, the president had no interest in saving the people from the disaster, but used it politically, discussed and decided on state affairs with a woman close to her personal relationship, and she was only interested in pursuing personal interests. At the time of the Sewol ferry disaster, President Park was the daughter of a president who had been in dictatorship several decades ago and was supported by conservative groups. During the dictatorship, the generation that experienced rapid social development at the expense of many working-class people after the Korean War. They missed President Park Chung-hee and believed that his daughter would do well, but she only cares about her appearance and has no interest in victims. Celebrities who mentioned the Sewol ferry at the time were put on a blacklist and put at a disadvantage. Critics of the regime were blacklisted and treated unequal. BTS was hated by the government at the time for comforting and donating to the families of the victims of the disaster. After that, the angry people held candlelight protests for several months, and in that cold winter, millions of citizens peacefully protested the president and impeached the president. Park Geun-hye, who was sentenced to imprisonment after trial and spent several years in prison, was recently released from prison because of her health. In Korea, another disaster occurred on the Saturday just before Halloween Day, and many young people were victimized. Every time there is a change of government, the people are anxious, heartbroken, and angry because of the irresponsible leadership that does not prepare for this ridiculous safety. Of course, there have been changes. But even now, absurdity, violence, and unfortunate incidents that happen to anyone without any sense of responsibility or guilt. It is unfortunate that the accidents continue. If you stay silent and go too far, that misfortune can happen to anyone. I hope this never happens again anywhere else.

Thank you for your thoughtful comment. Spring Day is a very deep and multi-layered song and, like you said; if you just watched the video without at least some context, you wouldn't know what was going on. BTS songs usually have an element of social commentary and criticism of societal conditions and norms in Korea particularly where they pertain to youth and their issues. They had to be careful about how they appoached the issue of the Sewol ferry disaster because of artists being blacklisted and losing their jobs, hence the use of the metaphors in Omelas and Snowpiercer. RM, the leader of BTS, is a deep thinker; he and the other two rappers write most of the songs and I hope that you will be able to delve deeper into the BTS body of work. Spring Day has come to have another significance, the more obvious one about missing somebody that one has not seen for a long time, during the pandemic. Since their first on-line concert, when they couldn't see their fans, BTS have ended their concerts with Spring Day. They also sang Spring Day in the Busan concert, alhough they didn't close the concert with it.

I'm glad you watched the explanation first before the MV. It certainly makes it more enjoyable and less confusing while still open to personal interpretations. A lot of people were definitely at fault. I think I read the owner to that shipping company committed suicide. The SK president was impeached and put in prison. Ummm, I have mixed feelings about that. On one hand, it's nice to see people in high office actually sent to jail for corruption. I wish we would do the same here. On the other hand, she wasn't directly involved with the cause of the disaster, so I feel like putting her in jail was more of a political move than actual justice. I remember hearing the news of her impeachment and prison sentence, but not the tragedy itself. It was memorable to me because I was shocked that a sitting President actually got sent to prison. The Sewol tragedy may just be one of the reasons used to put her in jail. As for BTS political activism- it concerns me a bit. Especially the WH event where to me it was really not proper (I'm not gonna argue about it here because most won't understand me and I've seen too many ARMYs who are way too sensitive and think anything BTS does is perfect). I think BTS members should definitely speak out and express their views when they want. They have that as individual rights, the same way you and I have the right to speak our mind. My concern is that OTHERS ARE USING THEM- and that's totally how I saw the WH event. Even RM expressed similar sentiment in his sit-down interview with Pharrell. If you want to check it out it's an interview for Rolling Stone and @ 20 minute mark he is questioning why he's doing all these political things asking "am I a diplomat?" With that said, I've seen many, many, many (hundreds of hours, hahaha) of videos on BTS and I'm thankful they don't really get into politics and for the most part they just stay true to the message that they put out in their music.

I feel the Italian Army explanation video is largely reflective of the intentionality of the music video. There are a few things I think were interpretations such as the stair climbing scene. In that, I view Jin stuck at the bottom of the stairwell looking a photograph rectangle while the others are climbing up the stairwell to reflect that the survivors will move on. Later he is left alone at the bottom, like the bottom of the sea. He will only exist as a memory best embodied in photos of his life. So, I see things differently on some points in the artistry but as to BTS commemorating the dead and using Snowpiercer to denounce governance run amok I do not question. I think the explanation is well researched drawing on many facts though Bulletproof Vibes did put out one which is a tad different and highlighted video elements not discussed by the Italian Army video. P.S. The Carpool Karaoke may need some visual adjustments so Google does not recognize it as it is property of the James Corden Show and may get copyrighted. It is quite entertaining, and you should do it. Just take precautions to make it less detectable.

There were a few other references pointed out in another explanation video. RM stands in an empty train car that is full of abandoned suitcases & clothes representing the student who went on a field trip & didn't return. Jin in the well of the saircase is deceased & stuck at the bottom watching his friends go up/grow up & the second time he is seen in the stairwell he is alone. There is a pile of clothes outside the train representing the dead, & the 'party' scene is not a happy memory. RM is somber. He is being attacked just like the protagonist in "Snowpiercer" was attacked when he tried to go to the front of the train. There is also a scene reminiscent of the 'Little Match Girl' where JK lights a match and his deceased loved ones appear around him.

Yes this is a true representation of the song and the video. Nothing BTS does is by mistake or coincidence. BTS has spoken about it and this song was written in memory of those lost in the Sewol ferry disaster particularly the children. They have drawn the parallel by using the train and referring to the movie Snow Piercer which in itself is a commentary on status and oppression. Those in charge on the ship told the children to stay seated and not to move while they, the crew and the captain, abandoned the ship.

The music video is definitely full of purposeful symbolism that represents the tragedy. The references to Omelas and Snowpiercer in particular are all but irrefutable. That said, from what I have heard the song itself was written to express the sadness and loneliness we feel when missing loved ones who are not in our lives or who we haven't been able to see in a long time, and not to reference the tragedy specifically. There is a bit of confusion among ARMY regarding this song and MV, and the political events surrounding the ferry sinking. Some misconceptions: "The song is about Sewol." RM has said on several occasions that he wrote this song about his friends back home who he missed, and SUGA said he wrote his part about a personal friend also. Jin said in an interview that the song is about sad events. Some fans think that is a veiled reference to the tragedy, but it's a pretty vague statement. Nobody in BTS has ever said the 2017 song lyrics are about the 2014 Sewol tragedy. BUT... The music video is definitely all about the ferry tragedy, and this was confirmed by the director of the MV who came up with the visual concept for it. He has talked about it in several interviews. It's very likely that RM contributed ideas for some of the literary and movie references used in the video. But normally the members have little or nothing to do with the creation of their music videos. Often they have no idea what it will be about until they are heading to the set. "This song and MV almost got them blacklisted by the government." This is not true. President Park Geun-hye was a corrupt president and she did 'blacklist' artists, musicians, and filmmakers (Like Snowpiercer director Bong Joon-ho) who spoke up about the Sewol sinking. She wanted to silence all criticism and keep her involvement in corruption a secret. But at the time this song and MV were released, she had already been removed from office. She was impeached and jailed soon after. BTS were safe from repercussions for this song. BUT... BTS wrote ANOTHER song with lyrics directly critical of the administration and its connection to Sewol and other scandals. "Am I Wrong" was released soon after the sinking. Even the choreography mocked a contemporary scandal involving a certain Park administration cabinet minister. But they were not big enough at the time to be noticed by the government, so nothing happened to them. If president Park had not already been stripped of power, there is no doubt that Spring Day would have landed them on the blacklist, because by 2017 they were a very prominent and influential group. BTS are seen by the west as a group who write uplifting/deep/meaningful lyrics. But what we miss are the extremely political and sometimes controversial topics they are also willing to address, because we simply don't follow the politics of their country. "Am I Wrong" is a good example of this, but it's not the only time BTS took a risk with their music.
@JoobieLoobieSoobie
@JoobieLoobieSoobie Год назад
For example the song Dope (among at least 10 other BTS songs) is banned from network TV broadcast in their country. They couldn't perform it on the music shows or festivals that would be on TV. Most are just banned for mentioning brand names. The reason given for Dope's ban was "vulgar language." But some suspect it's because of the sharp social criticism in RM's rap lyrics. His verse is a screed aimed at Korea's version of our "boomers." From his generation's perspective they have driven the cost of education and housing up so high that young people have given up on trying to get a home, save for the future, or even start families. This song was released during Park Geun-hye's presidency. And it was her father's policies that enabled Korea to experience a rapid economic boom - which younger generations blame for out-of-reach land/home prices. He was a military dictator who seized power in 1961 and abolished elections after he got into office. He was assassinated in 1979 by another government official who wanted to restore voting (real elections finally returned in 1987 after a lot of political chaos). He is very much loved by boomers, but not the younger generations. Did she have a say in getting the song banned? Nobody knows, but it is odd considering how mild the song's language is. Anyway, the ban didn't stop it from becoming a huge hit.

With all BTS songs they say you can interpret it as you see it. There is no right way. The video could ve about it with alot of references but it's not facts. The video as was shown was of different things. There was a movie that was reverence in this movie but some of the ferry. Different things. I think that's why they say you can interpret it because there is different tragedy for everyone that miss or long for someone.

For a more light hearted version of spring day, there is a dance practice to this song where they are acting silly. I really enjoy it. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8ZbPyzh3pio.html

and the volunteer diver who was able to get many of the dead kids from the the sunken ship committed suicided a few years after the accident. it was to traumatizing for him😔. there are interviews of him after the rescue operation. after i saw this video i watched everything i could about this accident, and the army who made this video was mentioned in korean news for traveling to korea to learn more, so yes the research has been done by multiple armys and double checked. but if the whole political corruption thing is true, we will never know.

I personally think this video has too much information. There's another explanation that only goes over the symbolism in the MV which I think is great. It's easier to follow along so you can really appreciate the MV.

it wasnt too much information things like the blacklist and many other things needed to be mentioned that the other one doesnt. the other one only shows the movie references and a few others when the video overall has so much more in it. the only problem with this video is the jump with the subtitles and the pace being too quick to keep up. but the information in it was very much needed.

Why didn't you play the subtitles with the mv?

if you dont believe what Army said in the video you can always watch the english documentary about it. but they only cover the accident not the political aspect behind it. it was on korean media and of course that can´t be proved to be right. but the former vice president of korea was fired because of it after the whole nation protested. there are to many details in the video for it not to be true. so yes i think it is right

Nahhh the video is reaching...most of them are coincidence. Sure it has some reference to the tragedy but not every single things were related to the tragedy like what the video is saying...this is just an assumption by fans. One thing for sure, the Spring Day song and mv are about coping after losing your loved ones and remembering them in your memories.

First, react to the MV and then to the explanation, your reaction becomes predictable.
