KLF Communications
The KLF were one of the more inventive techno outfits of the late 80s/early 90s. They referenced Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson’s Illuminatus! trilogy and Doctor Who a lot; they fired guns (blanks) over an audience full of music industry bigwigs and deposited a dead sheep at the entrance to the after party; they burned a million pounds in public; and so on. They occasionally dressed up like ice cream cones.

She died aged only 55 in her sleep in 1998 ( apparently from a blood clot in her lung although later found out to be an irregular heartbeat ) only 6 years after her performing this so if that’s true I hope feels ashamed because her health was already fading around this time and it probably effected her voice.

The KLF were essentially massive trolls. Aside from all of their performance art stunts, they thought “OK, we’ll combine techno beats, country legend Tammy Wynette, a Jimi Hendrix riff, & a rap about ice cream cones, & make a hit”.

the "Justified & Ancient" project was "The Ice Cream Men".Several months prior to the single's release, the KLF appeared at the Liverpool Festival of Comedy, where they sold ice creams to the audience while, on stage, figures swathen in grey and yellow robes chanted "justified...ancient.

Well played guys!!! Love your reaction and love the KLF. Check out what time is love, 3am eternal and last train to trancentral. Also see what they did at the Brit awards (uk music Oscars) when the team up with extreme noise terror and did 8:07 a metal version of 3am eternal…. Guns at the end. They “left” the music industry after that performance, deleted their back catalogue and then burned £1m on a remote Scottish island.

After having Tammy sing in this, dozens of artists wanted to do a track with KLF, cuz it really revitalized Tammy’s career. This was back when music was really good and there was no violence or overly sexist lyrics allowed. It was as an amazing time that highlighted gen X.

Like Johnny Cash, Tammy Wynette was excluded from the Country Music Hall of Fame. However, music artists in other genres CELEBRATED them!! Johnny Cash had Trent Reznor from NIne Inch Nails, Tammy Wynette had KLF. The scrolling text in the video HIGHLIGHTS all her achievements in music and her awards.. There is also a movie from 71' called A COAL MINER'S DAUGHTER... Check it out.

These two are the most out there individuals in the music business. They are still complete mavericks, and you have no idea when they will pop up and what they will do. They are really an art project that does whatever it feels like needs to be said at any time of their pleasing. The kLF really will be looked back on as an Art installation that lasted for years. How they convinced Tammy to do this I have no idea, but while it wasn’t maybe what she expected, it’ll go down as the coolest thing she ever did in her career.

Context behind ‘drive in ice-cream vans’ .. most of the lyrics in this track were in reference to SouthAfrica’s apartheid struggle at the time. The majority population of South Africans (Black) commuted and still commute to work in ‘mini-bus taxi’s’.. otherwise known as ice cream vans in the US. This song was championed and played to the death by young white youth in South Africa who were anti apartheid 🙂
