FIRST TIME REACTION TO U2- "WITH OR WITHOUT YOU" 

The instrument at the beginning you were wondering about is called the Infinite Guitar. It attaches to the guitar to make that sound when chords are struck. Edge (lead guitarist in U2) was sent the prototype of it by Michael Brook, who created it. He only created three of them and Edge has one of them. So when you see Edge back there holding the neck of his guitar but the other hand is idle, that's what he's using. He strikes a cord and is controlling where the sound goes from there.

You’ve just heard one of the most unique rock ballads of the 1980s, and possibly all time. Besides being an incredible song, I have one big memory of it: at a New Year’s Eve party many years ago, someone put this track on the stereo. And some of the girls who were there started screaming. This is also the only song I ever sang to a girl, as a type of serenade. Performed it once when I was younger, then later on in a lower range. But don’t shy away from thinking deeply. This world could use a lot more of that. Lastly, you look like you could possibly be a princess.

There's a version of this song: live in Boston 2001 that is beautiful to watch, and likely worth the reaction. Several old U2 songs are quite important to me, but "Bad" is probably at the top of that list, and their first song from first album, "I will follow" from "Boy", is so fun and catchy and didn't get the play it deserved.

During this time frame, you two seemed universally respected and listen to buy just about every group of friends I had. I don't know if that was symptomatic of their popularity in general or just where I was at, but one of the few bands most everyone could agree on was youtube. You too. Metal guys respect them, pop fans listen to them, they just have a lot of crossover potential and really none of the baggage and bloat that would hinder them down the road but at this point they were quite an honest and seemingly forthright musical force of nature

There was never a song that sounded like with or without you before and there hasn’t been once since. It was just so different to what came out in 1987. U2 were in their own category. The Joshua tree is a masterpiece.

The instrument you are hearing is from Edge - it's a special, extremely rare guitar called an "Infinite Guitar". This instrument was created by a Canadian musician, producer and inventor called Michael Brook. At the time (mid/late 80s), , there were only a handful ever made; they were essentially prototypes. One was acquired by Daniel Lanois who of course worked on all of U2's biggest albums and Edge was very intrigued by it and got his hands on one for himself. It essentially creates a continuous, or sustained note and allows the player to either hold it or play other notes over over it I think. There are similar devices out there nowadays but back then, I believe there were only 3 or 4 of those instruments in existence and, well, you are listening to one of them here. U2 and this song will remind me of my brother always. "Sunday Bloody Sunday," "Beautiful Day," "Where The Streets Have No Name, " "Pride," and "New Years Day," are all excellent to check out.

You should react to this german band Rammstein, they sing in German however their songs are often poetic with a deep and twisted meaning as the singer Till Lindemann himself is a poet and his parents were too. He is also a licensed pyrotechnic so their live shows include a lot of fire. I'd recommend this song Ich Tu Dir Weh -- live at Madison Square Garden, its about a man who is talking to himself in the mirror about self hatred, hurting himself, and loving himself for not loving himself.

Songs like Gloria, New Years Day, and The Unforgettable Fire were some of their greatest songs. You're right about knowing yourself.
