First time sailing - inspired by LaVagabonde

Took a vacation to Florida and set sail for the first time! This adventure was inspired by my favorite RU-vid channel Sailing LaVagabonde. The boat, Passages, is a 1986 Westwind - Young Sun, made in Taiwan, 35' cutter.
Cameras I use:
Panasonic - super clear and steady with optical image stabilizer! amzn.to/2x9aOBE
JVC Quadproof - Underwater camera and built tough, but still has zoom and looks like a normal camcorder! amzn.to/2tihhKG

I do enjoy Delos, they are probably the most adventurous of all sailing channels. There is just something about LaVagaBonde that sets them apart.

Marty, I've really taken a liking to that Sailboat Story family. They're a bit weirder than most channels, but there's just something about them that makes them a favorite of mine. ;) Ha - Just messing around (as usual). Great video, lovely boat, and many memorable adventures to come for these guys!

I know this video is about 5 years old. Looks like you're on a Youngsun 35. I've owned a sister-ship since 2013. She was built in 1981. Sailed her down the west coast from Seattle to the Sea of Cortez in the fall of 2016. Went through storms that made your squall seem like a light summer sprinkle. Not casting shade, just letting you know that a Youngsun is an excellent boat! While we were in horrendous conditions twice, hove-to for over 2 days each time, and our nerves on the very edge of sanity (hurricane strength winds howling through the rigging for 2 days can get on your nerves!), the boat did great, rising to every steep wave and swell like a laid-back swan! I have since ripped off the teak decking and painted with non-skid - makes for a much cooler deck and interior. When we pulled the teak (I did not have deck leaks) we found that the decking beneath was in superb condition, it is a parqueted layer (4"X4" squares) of marine plywood, sandwiched between two 1/4" layers of fiberglass/epoxy. Youngsuns are strong, easy-riding boats - slow, but comfy! Hope you are enjoying the dream!

I’ve always wondered when I see dogs on a boat where do they go to the bathroom when out at sea ?? Do you have a area where they go and must start to smell and the pee must leave stains ? Believe it or not this stops me from wanting to buy and sail for a year because my golden is my best friend and wouldn’t want to mess with his life and wouldn’t want to ruin a boat

I learnt to sail watching the America’s Cup on TV. Firstly in 1987 then I watched the next 2. In 2000 I bought a sailboat and sailed from New Zealand to the UK. Where I still am and planning my sail home again!! Probably the longest circumnavigation ever!!! 😛🤪😜🇳🇿

Really nice that you told us in your description what your boat was. Very nice boats too. Please be careful out there the sea is nothing to mess with, and not knowing the rules of the road not only endangers your life but the lives of others. I am an experienced waterman for all of my life, and have seen a lot of mistakes made that put others lives in danger. Here is one bit of advice I will give you; when anchoring, after you've dropped the hook, let out the appropriate scope, and snubbed off the rode, go back to your engine controls, put the boat in reverse and back up until you fell the anchor "dig in" to the bottom. They don't just set by dropping it! If a squall comes up and you drag anchor you can not only lose your boat, but you could take someone else's with you. Happy cruising! Peace

Awesome job man! Glad to see I am not the only crazy one who buys a sail boat with out the knowledge on how to use it :) In the last two weeks I purchased a 37 ALBERG MK II YAWL and I have never been on a sailboat before lol. Just felt it was something I had to get up and do. I too follow SV La Vagabonde, wicked salty, sailing nervously etc and just had to stop wanting to and start doing. Ignore negative comments, there are a lot of people whose idea of doing is cruising the waterways of RU-vid judging others lol. I hope you will post more on sailing.

I just found this channel. That's a nice looking boat, Brandon. And well done for coming back for more after a storm on your first sail. Many people get discouraged. I remember, when I was 18, sailing a 14' dinghy in a club race, with a potential girlfriend as crew, when a storm went through. The wind was around 35kts and we were flying. Monster planing on the reaches. Howling wind and feathering like mad upwind. Brilliant! She complained that the rain was hurting her face, so, being a chivalrous sort of guy, I suggested that she took shelter behind me. When that didn't work, I suggested that she could put the baling bucket over her head. That solved the problem. I don't know why, but she never went sailing with me again. We did win the race.

Good for you mate in having the guts to follow your dreams. Riley and Alayna have inspired so many people to follow their dreams, including me. I am looking forward buying my own 36' Adams Traditional before he end of the year and hitting the blue water. I live on the East coast of Australia and intend sailing to Indonesia for my first trip. I salute you on a Job well done!! I saw your boat, I guess it was the first time you went to work on it. You've done just a beautiful job!! I am impressed. That wasn't a small job. I also started watching LA Vagabonde about a year ago I think. Haven't been as brave as you, guess I'll have to give it a try! Congratulations on the maiden voyage, now I guess it's through the canal and to the great south pacific! I hope I see you there. Just reading some entries here, lot of negative people out there. Riley and Elayna are living a life most all of us wish we had and only a few have the balls to reach out and do it. You know which one you are, don't even answer those negative folks! Soon you'll have your own loyal following!! Good luck to ya!!

@wilfdarr
@wilfdarr 7 лет назад
Edward Lahr You know, I'm with you on learning them, but it's more important in my opinion that everyone is speaking the same language, especially when there is the possibility of grounding: when I have time I'll teach, but when I'm headed for a subsurface rock with a new person at the tiller (who is still getting used to pulling the tiller opposite direction) I'll say left or right: It's important not to get too hung up on salty talk to the detriment of safety. Also, many people on RU-vid will understand that better than Port and Starboard. Back and front, left and right, rope, wheel, kitchen, washroom, bedroom, we all know what is meant…this isn't an instructional video, and he's not sailing professionally.

Brandon, you are obviously the adventurous type, welcome to the world of sailing. One thing I would like to point out is your reference to Sailing La Vagabond, kudos to Riley and Elayna, they are producing interesting and entertaining content, and they are doing it very well as shown by their following. What needs to be realized is that they have gotten this far more by luck, and personality than by seamanship. Don’t get me wrong, they are learning and realize that they still have a lot to learn. Still, some of the ‘habits’ they have kept especially where safety is concerned leaves a lot to be desired. What I am saying is that as an inspiration, they are hard to beat, as a how to cruise, not so much. There is a plethora of videos and reference material out there, look at as much as you can and take heed of the best of what you see. All the best to you, Riley, and Elayna, keep on sailing. The adventure is unlimited.

Great first video, although you could be a little more animated when talking to the camera. Remember, the first part of any cruise whether it be across an ocean or just a 3 hour cruise (Gilligan) is planning which always starts with weather. Safety of the crew is the Captains responsibility! But you got home in one piece and that's a good thing, means you didn't panic or at least you didn't show it on the video! I look forward to your next video! Eagerly!! Good Luck and God Bless! Bill S.

homie789 He was only hesitant because he was being instructed to be: the voice in the background was concerned about getting battens hung up in the lazy jacks: at one point, the voice seems surprised by how fast he got the sail up by hand, and instructs him not to over tighten…Being that it's not his boat, you follow the instructions of the voice at the helm…which is the correct answer (unless safety is compromised which is a different issue).
