Fun fact: Tove Jansson - the creator of the Moomins - also illustrated one edition of The Hobbit, and portrayed Gollum as a Groke-like giant. This led to Tolkien actually rewriting the text to clearly state that Gollum was a *tiny* creature, as that clearly wasn’t obvious enough in the earlier edition.

The moomins were and are still huge, especially in Finland, where the author of the original books were from. I know that it also was big in Japan. In 2019, a new show called Moominvalley came out, and season 4 will come out later this year. I have read that the Groke (the first video) was based on loneliness. She is the manifistetion of that feeling and she freezes everything she touches. That particular video you watched, was the first time she arrives in the show, but later in the show, you really start to feel sorry for her. In one scene, she tries to get closer to a bonfire, to warm up, but she ends up putting out the fire instead. She just feels like this very tragic character, who is doomed to roam the world alone forever. All this of course, I didn't understand when I was little. I just found her terrifiing. As I said the lady of the cold is the physical manifistetion of winter and was meant as a warning to respect nature and the cold. If you go outside wholly unprepared like Little My did, then there is a big danger in going outside in the wintertime, since it's so cold. Little My did survive the night. Right after the scene Moomin and Too-Ticky took her inside to warm her by the fire. The episode ends with the narrater reminding the audience that Little My is indestructible 😂😂 What I really love about the Moomins is that it's not afraid to go there in the spook factory, and there are also episodes that end on a really sombre and melancholic note. But in general it's such a cozy and heartwarming show. The moomins was my very first comfort show, that I'd watch when I was sad as a child. All episodes up to 78 is on youtube in english, if you'd like to watch whole episodes of it.

Moomin is amazing. I am so old that I watched the series with my children. It was broadcast in the mornings on weekends and the whole family had to watch every time - including my husband. I read the books as a child, and the characters that scared me the most were the Hattifatteners. They could electrocute you and wandered around in large herds, deaf and dumb, as if they were forever searching for something.

Oh absolutely.... The hattifatteners were terrifying. That big storm on the hattifatteners island was another scene that had me scared out of my mind as a child. I never got to read the books as a child unfortunately, but I did have a book about Ninny, which was written with the illustrations from the show. And I had one with Alicia.

This show was and still is very huge in all Nordic countries, sadly this particular show is very hard to get a hold off in either Finish or Swedish (no one knows why they don't re-master it on DVD) It is however pretty easy to find a remastered version in English (I think the BBC has it!)

This is nostalgic! I had a Mumintrollet movie where Moomin became able to breathe and swim deep underwater with a dolphin he saved. It just stuck with me more than a lot of childhood movies. And I remember Hufsa leaving a great impression on me as well, but I never thought she was scary, or even that she was supposed to be scary. But I think I might have been a bit of a dense child😅 Snusmuriken/Snufkin was my favorite characters. He was and still is very desirable to me in the 80s anime lol (By desirable I mean I related to him a lot, and his way of life was desirable to me)

regarding Hufsa, I think that kind of depends on which episode with her you saw and how old you were. She is a manifistetion of loneliness, and the cold that comes with being utterly alone and doomed to be lonely for all of eternity after all. In later episodes of the show, you really starts go feel sorry for her. One episode that really made an impact on me with her, where I wasn't super scared, was the midwinter bonfire, where she tries to get warm by the fire, but just ends up putting the whole thing out instead, ending the bonfire celebration. You kind of just want to give her a hug, but you know, you can't do that, because you'll freeze to death. And I agree. Snufkin is such an amazing and interesting character. My favourite episode is the first one where he leaves for his winter travels. It's such a sweet and melancholic feeling you get from that particular episode.

@@cecilie1991 I can count on three fingers the number of times I have gotten scared by a movie/book/series. As I said, I was and still am a bit dense. It was only in my mid-teens when someone told me they used to be scared of Hufsa, and I had a lightbulb moment; "Oh, I guess she would be scary for some kids". The characters being scared of her I never understood until then, I simply saw her lonely parts. It only made me appreciate her so much more. And same here! Snufkin leaving for winter is my favorite episode as well. And his journey back, the quiet and the dark, and the fire lit. His conversation with that little creature, I was captivated.

@@kunilsen2519 Maybe you weren't dense, but very perceptive, since you saw her loneliness, which I didn't until much later. I just had nightmares. And OMG, me too. That scene is so good. Him being so uncomfortable with the idea that Moomin misses him a lot when he's gone.. I'm thinking about requesting his leaving episode. I feel like that episode perfectly encapsulate the whole vibe of the moomins series. The melancoly, the slice of life, when they're dancing, Plus it gives a very good insight into the different characters. That episode also taught me a lot. As a child I was very much like Moomin, in that, I didn't understand, that other people, had different social needs than me, and that some people preferred being alone, while others wanted to be around other people all the time. I very much tended to be very pushy as a child. Then I watched the episode of Snufkin leaving, and it was like a lightbulb moment for me. I just love this series so much 🤩🤩

@@cecilie1991 Seems we were the complete opposite!😂 I love my alone time, and my social needs get easily overflowed. I am lucky I have people willing to wait for me whenever I disappear and become hard to reach. I am always so charmed by Moomin, and any outgoing characters for that matter, because of this. I have actually thought about the same request as well for a bit now! But I probably won't because money. Moomin is also pretty heavily copyrighted I think, but I would love a reaction to that episode! I don't even know how to put into words how much I love that particular moment in the series, how much it resonated with me.

@@kunilsen2519 Yeah... I grew up to be more of a Snufkin than a Moomin, but for quite a while I just wanted to be with my friends all the time. As I said, than moment in the series really helped me understand that not everyone feels the same way I do. 😅 And that's understandable. I will probably request it at some point, but it'll probably be some time, since I want to finish requesting Ylvis I Sogn first But I must say I also really adore the episodes with the invisible child. I didn't like it as much when I was a child, but when I grew up and saw it for what it was... A very anxious child with severe self-esteem issues, I just fell in love with that storyline. 😍😍

I am 31 heats old, But I still get nightmares absolut the Lady of Cold. Esther I see her, or I just hear her song in the background as I am walking thru a horrific landscape, of either zombie inuit women or from the mouths of skeletons in or above ground… With the explanations that their souls are still trapped in the area.

I know the feeling... A part of me was really happy that I moved to Denmark at 10 years old, cause the lady of the cold made me scared of snow.... I started to see her everywhere 😅
