It's a talk box or voice box that plugs into his guitar and Amp attached to the microphone. Peter Frampton is a Master talent with this device not to mention his guitar skills. Some people say that this is what inspired auto-tune. This performance is about 20 years before auto-tune came into existence. I love too watch the young generation react to the talk box. ❤ your reaction!

What Peter is using is called a TALK BOX by Bob Heil. On the floor is the electronic box that the guitar is plugged into. Also plugged into the top of this box is a plastic tube that is clamped along the microphone stand. You put the end of this tube in your mouth. You can charge the sound waves the guitar makes by changing the shape of your mouth, thereby making the guitar able to talk. Joe Walsh of The James Gang/The Eagles uses a Talk Box, and so does Joe Perry of Aerosmith and Ritchie Sambora from Bon Jovi. It's a really cool effect!!&!

OH YES !! Frampton Comes Alive. .. was his break out album. Fantastic. ... Do You Feel Like We Do ..I have heard others use the Talk Box but I think this is the best of all. That mischievous playful look and hair, The girls sure did like him.There is a longer version from the same concert as Freebird by Lynyrd Skynyrd Oakland Colosseum 1977.

Peter Frampton is an English rock musician, singer, songwriter & producer. He was previously associated with the bands Humble Pie & The Herd. I had his famous 1976 album "Frampton Comes Alive". His biggest hits are "Show Me The Way," "Baby, I Love Your Way," "Do You Feel Like We Do" & "I'm In You". He was famous for using a talk box in live performances.

I saw Frampton live three times. Once when the Frampton Comes Alive album had fairly recently been released and then twice in the 1990s. All three shows were great.

I saw this guy back in the early 90s when I was stationed in Augusta Georgia with the army. It was such a great show. He honestly looked like he was enjoying himself instead of working. Like if he invited you over to his garage for a couple beers and a jam session. A great show I will always remember (it helped that I was right up front, 5 feet from him)

The switch on the guitar is for selecting pick-ups (the rectangular silvery things under the strings). Gibson, Les Pauls like the one he's playing have the switch at the top, Fender, Stratocasters have the switch below. If a guitar only has one pick-up it doesn't need a selector switch. Different pick-ups has different frequency sensitivities & can be set up with different tones such as a mellow blues sound or a harsh rock sound. Then you've got the effects peddles which are a whole different subject.

@@garygoodrich7495 To be honest I didn't take much notice of the guitar, but it's not unusual for guitarists to customise their guitars. I'm no connoisseur of guitars but have played a couple of 3 pick-up les Paul's. Beautiful tones. My main instrument is drums which has the adverse effect of making ones fingers too bulky to play a simple A major on a guitar. 😄

That's a talkbox he's using. The guitar sound (electronic) goes to his amplifier, then to the talkbox which sends the (audio) sound through a pipe to his mouth (the straw) and he changes the sounds moving his mouth like he's talking.

This is a song about a hangover, and it's brilliant. As a 17 or 18 year old vocalist for an amateur rock band back in the 70's, I used to sing this song in the morning when I was usually hung over as well after we had done a gig the night before.

My sister loved him too. She had a 6'x4' poster behind her bed with a shirtless Frampton with his arms crossed with the long hair. We saw him live around this time opening for Yes. The man is an incredible guitarist and is sadly overlooked when people put out those greatest guitarists lists.

Frampton was a master at the talk box. Nobody could compete with him. I had the "Frampton Comes Alive" album just like everybody else. Another great song from that album was, Baby "I Love Your Way". And yes, somebody send Donna a straw!

If you go back and rewatch your reaction to Lynyrd Skynyrd's Free Bird, you should notice all the teenage girls in the front row. They weren't there to see Skynyrd, as at that concert Peter Frampton performed after Skynyrd. Aunt Bea and Nana had it going on. I knew someone that had a Talk-Box. He mainly used it for a guitar. It sure needed a lot of rinsing out after he tried to "talk" the music by putting the tube in his mouth.

Legendary ... Peter Frampton is one of the greatest artists of our time. The "talk box" was a cool effect used by guitarists in the 70's - Joe Walsh, Aerosmith, Rick Derringer .... and of course Frampton. Check out the "Frampton Comes Alive album". One of the greatest live albums of all time.

I believe he patented the "squawk box" as he called it. I've been lucky enough to see Peter Frampton a few times in Cincinnati, where he made his home for almost 15 years. He considered Cincinnati his home and made a point to try play at least 1 concert a year in the city. He's one of the most underrated musicians of my time.

Great reaction girls! Frampton created the concept of the Talk box; others have tried to use it in their songs, but it sounds nothing like when Peter does it. this was the short version of the song, the long version on the album you just got to hear. he uses the Talk box a lot longer!

Peter is a great guitarist and singer.The switch on the guitar selects which pick up is being used,on this guitar he has three to choose from,each having different tones,and the tube is connected to a talk box,whch is used with the guitar and his voice.Pretty cool.Joe Walsh also used a talk box on some songs.I sawPeter in Tulsa,Oklahoma in 1976,he was very good.

Frampton Comes Alive his live album that featured a 14 minute version of this song was gigantic when it released. Back the we had AM and FM radio but FM was fairly new and that's where long album music was heard and they'd play this song. It was beyond epic.

That Les Paul is an iconic guitar in rock. The switch is called a pick up selector. It allows you to toggle between the bridge pick up, neck pickup and middle pickup. Bridge pickup is a warmer tone generally for rhythm and the neck pickup has a brighter tone for lead and solos. Other makes usually have similar switches depending on number of pickups.

Part III 😊 The talk box is by his feet with a tiny speaker and a on and off The guitar is plugged in the box and also can bi-pass to the amp The sound goes through a long clear hose up to the mic and goes in his mouth. The sound goes in and out his mouth and picked up by the microphone 🎤🎸☮️

This is a good song by him and he was pretty much a one hit wonder (album wise). "Frampton Comes Alive" was all he had. About 30 years ago he came to play here, and I understand that they play a different place every night while on tour but he asked, "Where am I tonight?' after his third lead into show song and when everyone shouted "Reno"!!!! He said, "Who the hell wants to live here?" You could feel the energy go out of the venue. Needless to say we didn't "feel it". I lost what respect I had for him in an instant. Fortunately, "Uncle Ted" followed and fixed everything. Happy 4/20 anyway.

I grew up in the 70's and my friend in High School had "Framton Comes Alive" and I remember listening to it with him one day after school at his house. I had "Machine Head" by Deep Purple with the song Smoke on the Water. That was cool too. Also I had Alice Cooper's "Billion Dollar Babies" and a ZZ Top Album. I also had Led Zepplin's "houses of the Holy". My other friend had Black Oak Arkansas "When electricity came to Arkansas". And of course, he also had Black Sabbath's Paranoid. My Dad did not approve of my music.

Love ya all. Yes I CAN DIG IT! Frampton is awesome, there are so many hidden gems on his "Comes Alive" album. "Penny for your Thoughts"? Also if you gals want to check some Queen out, then very cool. Try march of the black queen, brighton rock, tenement funster, flick of the wrist and lily of the valley. Play the last three songs as close as you can together with breaks obviously. Literally, well not quite literally, but the joke was that if you lived in the burbs, you were issued Frampton Comes Alive, it was mandatory. And it wasn't just your Aunt, every girl I knew was in love with him. This was a performance that was recorded prior to the release of his ginormous album "Frampton Comes Alive." I guarantee you, had this been after that albums release, the crowd would be going insane, and those girls in the audience would have been climbing up on that stage. The "straw" is called a talk box. You'll see him slide the little box across the floor before he starts using it. It funnels the sound of the guitar up through that tube into his mouth. Depending on how he shapes his mouth is what gives it that talking wah sound. The microphone is there to pick up the sound and send it out with the effect.

“One of them straws” would not help you since the sound actually comes from what he is playing on the guitar. It is called a talk box. The notes he plays on the guitar travel up the tube and into his mouth and is picked up by his vocal mic. He shapes his mouth to modify the sounds coming from the guitar, but doesn’t actually talk or sing. The sound of the notes is purely from the guitar.

I can't believe no one is willing to get Donna a talk box!! You can get a similar affect from a synthesizer with a vocoder. In either case, you don't need to be able to sing well to sound good, but you do need to be able to either play guitar or keyboard, at least a little bit.
