Dave died in 2005 at 68 years. This was shown on the BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) in 1992-94 according to Wiki. Dave Allen was by far the most viewed stand-up comedian ever in the history of Television up to that point in time. Did you know that his first long term job was as a journalist. You should watch his Watch jokes (telling or teaching the time to a child)

The whistles are attached to the life jackets. They're not to signal to rescue planes, they're mostly to signal to other survivors etc to help people get/stay together. Life-jackets are still a thing and usually under your seat. It might be the case that some aircraft that don't operate over large bodies of water don't need them (eg just doing US domestic flights). But every airliner I've been on has had them.

Dave Allen was Irish (born in Dublin) and I would guess the show was recorded mid 1990's as there are clips with the same set dated 1994. He died in 2005. If you look closely he is missing part of his index finger on his left hand. He never (as far as I know) revealed the actual reason he lost it and would come up with various reasons in his act. On Wikipedia the cause is down as he trapped it in a machine cog but as I say whether that was the real reason I don't know. Various reasons he gave were: One version was that his brother John had surprised him by snapping his jaw shut when they were children. A further explanation he gave on his programme, Dave Allen at Large, was that he often stuck his finger in his whiskey glass and it had been eaten away by strong drink. He also said it was worn away from repeatedly brushing the dust from his suit. One of his stand-up jokes was that, as a boy, he and his friends would go to see a cowboy movie at the local cinema, then come out ready to play Cowboys and Indians. Staring down at his truncated finger, he would mutter, "I had a sawn-off shotgun". On his show he told a long, elaborate ghost story, ending with "something evil" attacking him in a dark and haunted house. Allen grabbed and bit the attacker, the studio lights came back up, and it was his own left hand.

I remember his tv series that came on once a week after they started airing BBC programs here in the US. His show "Dave Allen At Large" was hilarious, he would tell stories and have skits too. He and Carlin were similar in many ways, they both loved to tell stories, (that's the Irish in them) and they had a similar style of comedy, especially religious jokes, you see, they were both atheists. They both started working in comedy about the same time, just in different countries. Carlin started as a comedy writer for shows in the 60's, and Allen started doing stand-up in the 60's. Dave's tv series started about 1971, he was always one of my favorites. There are tons of videos on RU-vid, the longer ones are better, because some of the skits are kind of connected, but some people have cut them up into 3 - 5 minutes, try to find the longer ones if you can. I remember watching him in the 70's, but the video you watched looks like it was made in the mid 90's. Anyway, loved the review, love you, take care and stay safe ❤️

For Holmes, there's a novel called 'Dust and Shadow' by Lyndsay Faye, an American which is very good, tying him in with Jack the Ripper who seems as clever as he. The oddest I read was 'Exit Sherlock Holmes' which had a Sci-fi theme. A decent Victorian Detective novel was 'Necropolis' by (I think) Basil Copper. It dealt with the Victorian Necropolis Railway which ran out of London with corpses to be buried elsewhere. There's a good novel about The Ripper in the Old West called 'The English Monster' too.

2 things I enjoy on a flight that most people don't..... 1) Turbulence...it's like a giant massage chair 2) a crying baby. Brings back memories of when my kids were young. Puts me to sleep every time. On the other hand, I don't like a screaming baby on flight...but that's usually a result of a panicked parent trying to stop a baby who's crying likely as a result of the air pressure and ears. Funny story, was on a flight and a first time flyer was asking why you needed seatbelts for turbulence as the "Bump" would push you to your seat. The stewardess then explained that turbulence aren't "bumps" rather pockets of low pressure where the plane briefly looses altitude. That dude did not look very comforted with that information.

Yeah, Dave was very Irish although he lived and performed in the UK for a long time. I grew up watching him and, in the UK at least, he pretty much was the prototype raconteur stand up comedian. He also was super cool. For his TV show he used to sit, smoke and drink and tell funny stories. You should check out some of his sketches as well. He was particularly great at poking fun at religion. Also, by all accounts, he was a decent man too.

I grew up on Dave Allen's comedy in the 70s. He was indeed Irish and told wonderfully weird and funny jokes and stories on his show, "Dave Allen At Large". There was a documentary about him on RU-vid, called something like "God's own Atheist". If you can still find it, it is enjoyable. Addendum: it's "God's Own Comedian". Still on YT, but the RU-vid gods will eat my comment alive if I dare put the link in here. Sorry for that.

Not sure of the year but I'd reck,on mid- to late-80s maybe? And yes, Dave Allen was Irish. Yes, the Carlin 'soft words' sketch I recall mainly due to his train of thought from 'shell shock' to 'Post Traumatic STress Syndrome', via one or two other, lengthening, softening expressions. Have you read any of the modern Holmes books by James Lovegrove, they are pretty good. For a song without lyrics, have a listen to eith YYZ or La Villa Strangiato, both by Rush.

Billy Connolly has a couple of routines involving planes and is a great story teller. Dave Allen is Irish and had his own show on British tv in the 1970s and (I think)1980s. Enya is Irish and so are The Boomtown Rats (Bob Geldoff).

Dave Allen was Irish, he passed away a few years ago. I think this was from a show he did in the late 1990s. The thing about the instructions about floatation devices and life vests are usually only done on flights that go out over oceans or large seas, so I would imagine most flights that cross continents without needing to go near a sea or ocean may not give the demonstration for life vests

Coincidentally, I read the complete works of Arthur Conan Doyle before I was 9 years old and I worked out that the key to solving Sherlock's cases is nearly always in the title. For instance, I started reading The Lion's Mane and immediately thought of a Lion's Mane Jellyfish, I was also interested in Marine Biology back then, and the poisonous jellyfish turned out to be the murder weapon. There's another Sherlock story called The Blanched Soldier and I had read somewhere that blanching of the skin is the first symptom of Leprosy and indeed Leprosy was the catalyst for everything that occured in the story. I think I solved 3 of the stories I read,, before Sherlock had, and started to think that he can't be that clever, if a little boy can solve the case. 😃

If you have only ever travelled by domestic airlines in the US or Canada whuch do not fly over large bodies of water like the Indian Ocean then it makes little sense for the Air crew to have demonstrations on how to put on a life jacket or be instructed when to blow a whistle. As Dave Allen lived mainly in Britain or Ireland where most air travel takes place at some part of the journey takes place over large bodies of water because one mostly uses Air travel to go to Europe or further but much less often to travel domestically as the distances to travel are usually so short and the road and rail transport is actually generally more convenient, cheaper and almost as quick if one considers the time spent getting to and from airports and the inevitable waiting times while there. But as Dave Allen was a renowned international entertainer he probably had a lot more experiences with international flights over large bodies of water than most people.

I think Dave was popular in the 1970's. Now the seat can be used as a floatation device. If I'm on a plane it ends up in the ocean, I'm fairly certain the seat will be used a toilet. "it's not shell shock anymore: now it's PTSD," was one Carlin's examples. Do you have a favorite Holmes story? I've read them all.

It's extremely dramatic and whenever I listen to it, I'm imagining a fleet of massive alien ships slowly making their way into our atmosphere while primitive looking, yet advanced very tall beings jump out of the ships with long spears in their hands because they love hand to hand combat. These beings are led by women and are fierce warriors that care about our planet and come to rid it of evil, and if you're a kind person, they spare you. If not, they spear you. Oscar Wild, James Joyce, Yeats ... I wonder how long the tax breaks for artists have been a thing - at times it seems that the Irish have an rather high percentage of artists in their population.
