This was Bruce's first major blockbuster hit (same for Alan Rickman aka Professor Severus Snape from Harry Potter). Many fans know him for all of his action & dramatic roles such as the Die Hard franchise, The 6th Sense, Unbreakable, Armageddon, etc. I'd like to suggest something a bit different than the usual Bruce Willis movies. Please watch "Death Becomes Her" (1992) starring Bruce, Meryl Streep, & Goldie Hawn. I think you will get a kick out of his comedic talents, as he is hilarious in that dark humor film. 🤣 Also if you want to see Alan Rickman in a completely over the top performance, check out "Robin Hood - Prince of Thieves" (1991) starring Kevin Costner, Alan Rickman, & Morgan Freeman...
If you have trouble with pressure in your ears when you fly chew gum as you take off and land as well as throughout the flight as much as possible depending on the length of the flight. Chewing stretches the ear canal and helps relieve pressure.
Die Hard is absolutely a Christmas movie I a story of a man trying to reunite with his family during the holidays. It's set at Christmas and Christmas plays a part in the narrative of the story. So yes it's Christmas movie its just a typical or traditional "Holiday movie".
True, but the way Ellis urges Holly to show off the Rolex to John is like him saying, "Look, she choose us - AND ME - over you!" It just further adds to that symbolism when she takes the Rolex off and sends Hans plummeting to his death during the climax.
@@stefanforrer2573 He's reacted to the Harry Potter movies, so that's the logical role to bring up. And could you please try to be civil. Or at least make an attempt at pretending.
14:27 - this guy is Alexander Godunov and he was Russian ballet dance, a Premier (meaning he gets lead roles). He defected to US in 1979 - there is even a movie about "Flight 222".
Fun reaction to one of my favorite Christmas movies! Die Hard is a must watch in our house for the holiday season. It ain’t Christmas until Hans Gruber falls from Nakatomi Plaza!
"Welcome to the party, pal!" It isn't Christmas in my house until Hans Gruber is THROWN off the top of Nakatomi Plaza. 😎 Merry Christmas! ✝️ 🙏 🎄 🎁 Fun Fact: In 2007, Bruce Willis donated John McClane's undershirt to the Smithsonian Museum. Making Lemonade Fact: The scene where McClane (Bruce Willis) falls down a shaft was a mistake by the stuntman, who was supposed to grab the first vent, as it originally was planned. He slipped and continued to fall, but the shot was used anyway; it was edited together with one where McClane grabs the next vent down as he falls. When Worlds Collide Fact: The scene in which Gruber (Alan Rickman) and McClane (Bruce Willis) meet for the first time was inserted into the script after Alan Rickman was found to be proficient at mimicking American accents. The filmmakers had been looking for a way to have the two characters meet prior to the climax and capitalized on Rickman's talent. Casting Notes Fact: Alan Rickman nearly passed up the role of Hans Gruber, which ended up being his first American film role. He had only arrived in Hollywood two days earlier and was appalled by the idea of his first role being the villain in an action film. To a degree, Rickman was right to be concerned considering his performance as Hans Gruber was so hailed that the actor had to struggle being typecast as a player of villains for much of his career. Location Location Fact: The fictional Nakatomi Plaza is the headquarters of 20th Century Studios, so the studio could use one of its own buildings and didn't have to hold back on stunts and action sequences. While Jeb Stuart was writing the screenplay, he did a tour of the building, and immediately incorporated some of the locations and objects he found there into his script as set pieces. The company charged itself rent for the use of the then-unfinished building. Some of the middle floors were occupied by legal and administrative departments, so only empty floors were used for filming. Still, the filming of scenes that involved gunfire had to be postponed until after hours because some of the employees from the active floors started to complain about the noise.
It's a Christmas movie for a couple reasons beyond the music and the occasional Santa hat. For one, the story is about a man trying to reconcile with his wife and reunite his family for Christmas. But also, it's about a good man triumphing over evil in the face of seemingly impossible odds. It's practically a miracle - a Christmas miracle - that McClane survived to save all those hostages, and it's the kind of hopefulness that fits right in with the holiday season. Part of what makes Die Hard so great is how tight the script is. In a way, it actually reminds me of Back To The Future. Everything has a reason and a purpose. Everything is setting up or leading to something the movie delivers on later. Everything gets a satisfying resolution. There's no fat. Nothing goes to waste.
Die Hard is considered a Christmas Movie because the plot is directly dependent on it taking place at (or around) Christmas. McClane is invited to Los Angeles specifically to attend the Christmas Eve Party. If the party was not happening, McClane would not have been present to oppose the terrorists/thieves and there would have been no plot for the movie. Thus, the plot is dependent on Christmas, thus Die Hard is a Christmas movie.
Prob the best pic for a first time bruce willis flick, wild ride of a franchise. "now i know what a tv dinner feels like" is something everyone should hear : P
John McClain told Hans he was "kinda' partial to Roy Rogers", then he said 'Yippee-kay-ay, mf'. Roy Rogers was a famous cowboy entertainer many years ago (mostly 1940s & 50s I believe) whose famous slogan was 'Yippee-kay, yippee-ay'.
Yes! The police officer is the dad from Family Matters! Carl Winslow! And he is also a cop in the TV show. And he's Steve Urkel's neighbor.... ALSO, Bruce Willis himself came out and said that Die Hard is NOT a Christmas movie.
Bruce Willis did actually suffer some serious injuries while filming this movie. During the scene where McClane shoots a terrorist through a table, Willis suffered a permanent two-thirds hearing loss in his left ear caused by firing loud blank cartridges close to his head. The first scene he shot was his leap from the top of Nakatomi Plaza with a firehose wrapped around his waist. The stunt involved a 25-foot leap from a five-story parking garage ledge onto an airbag as a wall of flames exploded behind him. Bruce nearly missed the airbag below and nearly wound up nearly smashing his head on the concrete sidewalk.
In regards to the prank calls comment, you're right. It's both. It's just that some people say "prank calls" and others say "crank calls". Both are correct.
Channel 9 is the emergency broadcast frequency for CB type radios. I used a similar hand-held radio for maritime communication on my personal boat. It was the only way McClane could be sure the proper authorities would hear his transmission. Likewise, those radios scan all possible frequencies and lock onto whatever is being broadcast, which is why Hans and his men could hear it.
Nice! This is a great Christmas action movie! It's based on the 1979 novel, NOTHING LASTS FOREVER, which was a sequel to THE DETECTIVE, which was made into a movie in 1968 starring Frank Sinatra.
If this is a Christmas movie, than Rocky is a Thanksgiving movie! How? There's a part when Adrian mentions it's Thanksgiving and Pauly throws the turkey outside!
That Rocky turkey scene is in the middle of the movie, maybe a few lines regarding thanksgiving were said... in Die hard, Christmas references are sprinkled throughout the film from beginning to end, even his wife's name is Holly, hence its a Christmas movie...
What up Newfie. Director McTiernan's follow-up to Predator (1987) and loosely based on the Roderick Thorp novel, "Nothing Lasts Forever" (1979). This was a gamechanger of the action genre for it's time. Many copycats were made. Some were good and some weren't. Bruce Willis' 3rd film role and he became the highest paid film actor of the time ($5 mil). This was after he released an album called "The Return of Bruno" and finishing his 5-season run on the TV series, "Moonlighting". Willis as McClane was known as America's unluckiest cop. But as an flawed and relatable character, it made him beloved as an action hero. The late, Alan Rickman (Hans Gruber) in his first feature film redefined onscreen villains. He is one of several actors in the film who've passed away. It is a true summer blockbuster. As it's only set during Christmas, it's only been seen as an Christmas film. Of the 4 sequels, parts 2, 3 and 4 are pretty good. The 5th and final one is not seen as an good finale. Willis' retirement from acting in early 2022 after being diagnosed with Aphasia was very unexpected. His career reads over 100 roles, films and television. As Detective John McClane, he'll never be forgotten. 35 years later, it's still Yippee-ki-yay motherf******.
They wouldn't know what boss looked like as is 1988 before Google and cell phones. Couple of fyi. This was Alan Rickmans first movie role as he started In Theater. He went on to many roles like in Robin Hood Prince of Thieves and Harry Potter as Snape. Also his reaction at the drop at endnis real as director had stunts release him on 2 instead of 3. And the young daughter is played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead in one of her first roles herself
Of course it's a Christmas movie. There is more Christmas music and iconography than in Miracle on 34th Street. We hear Jingle Bells in the score 2 minutes in. John McClaine represents the tradition moral values of Christmas, a man trying to reconcile with his estranged wife and children over Christmas. Hans Gruber represents the corrupted, materialistic side of Christmas, a man trying to get rich over Christmas, no matter who he must hurt. Christmas is important to the plot. Hans needs a significant, but controllable, number of hostages to make his plan work. He can't have people all over the building, but he needs some to get the police and FBI to show up. So the office Christmas party is the only night of the year this plan could work. And it's the only time John McClaine would show up. Many people through out the movie say, Merry Christmas. Oh, and just in case there was still any lingering doubt, John's wife in named Holly.
Hart Bochner (Ellis) doesn’t get the credit he deserves. His performance is so brilliantly despicable! It’s been my experience that he is the least likable character of the film. Not Hans. Not Karl. Not Thornberg. Not Dwayne T. Robinson. Not Johnson &Johnson. Ellis. Edit- And Argyle is the perfect example of how you earn a tip without just expecting one!
Hart Bochner is the son of famous character actor Llyod Bochner. One of his most memorable roles was from the Twilight Zone episode " To Serve Man" in 1962. Llyod also made appearances in the Wild Wild West, Mission Impossible and Dynasty series from 1980's
The image of a CEO might not be impossible to get but the movie came out in 1988, they weren't exactly able to Google him. Besides I think he was just sitting back behind people until he came forward, Hans may have known what he looked like but was just calling him out to come forward.
People today take everything for granted today. Picture if you will, a world without internet, cell phones, Tik Tok, Facebook, RU-vid or Google. We had to get all our info from things like the news, newspapers and Yellow Pages. Can you imagine? I'm surprised Hans comprised as much info on Takagi as did. Anyway, nice reaction. You've gained a sub...
Hope you'll react to other Die Hard movies. #2 and #3 are good (third movie is the best). Fourth one is worth watching, but fifth is stupid and boring.
Yeah 3rd is the best. Was the 4th one with Ramona Flowers, Tim the elephant and Justin Long? I loved that one too. (Sometimes I forget the actors names but I can see their faces in my mind)
Karl's fingers are somewhat between the chain and his neck when he's shown hanging there... or his fingers are trying to work at creating a gap to allow him to continue to breathe, and once the roof explodes, I reckon this would be when he would've fallen free, with the roof/pulley system breaking loose.
Putting the fingers between the chain and his neck makes sense, but I never thought that he was "knocked loose by the explosion"...I always thought that a paramedic, cop or firefighter saw him hanging, was still breathing and brought him down, that's why he's wrapped in a blanket which firefighters use to bring out some victims.
One of the things I LOVE about Die Hard (in the long list of things I love about Die Hard) is that (like the original Star Wars) it was very much a "captured lightning in a bottle" movie that SHOULD have totally flopped (at worst) or (at best) did mediocrely well but been a 'forgettable' movie. This was Alan Rickman's FIRST Hollywood movie role. (one that he was reluctant to accept) But he "hit the ground running" and NAILED it! AND Bruce Willis (with his receding hairline & "Dadbod") did NOT fit the mold of typical, musclebound 80s action movie leading men! In fact, before Die Hard, Willis was mostly known as a TV Heartthrob and Comedic actor! There were SO many ways for this thing to go wrong (again, like Star Wars), but everything just "came together" perfectly! Giving us this AMAZING movie that spawned an entire franchise & turned Bruce Willis into an Action Star! So cool.
You have to get "Ear Planes" or similar for your next flight! I've had excruciating experiences with ear popping and sinus pressure for many years until I found them. My ears would be clogged for hours after getting off the plane, but now it's reduced to almost nil. Worth a shot.
The story starts off, he's going to a Christmas party. It's Christmas Eve, all the music it's Christmas music. It's a Christmas movie, that some action movie takes place inside of.
This movie came out prior to the internet being a big thing and what internet there was was dial up which means most web sites that did exist didn’t have pictures because it would take forever to load. (I’m talking 10-15 minutes with a regular computer. Depending on the pixel count.) We are all spoiled now lol.
A crank call is when you call a company or official government office and make false claims like a fire, bomb etc. A prank call is when you call an individual and and ask if their refrigerator is running then tell them to they better go chase it when they say yes. One is intended to cause chaos or damage the other is usually dumb kids who got bored.
Yep, the bad guys also chose the Christmas party to minimize the amount of people that would be in the building. They needed some hostages but not a whole building full. Plus the construction workers would be gone as well for the holiday and minimum security after hours and on Christmas Eve.
spoilers community 1st season: finally you get some of the refernces in the community paintball episode. Especially why Jeff takes off his shirt revealing the white tanktop (with the comment "don´t depend on cheap ploys") and how Jeff confronts the Dean (how he holds the gun from Cheng and has the other one taped on his back) or after sleeping with britta he says "oh oh - out of ammo hans?"
I love how your reaction to the whole movie was underestimating John the whole time but he pulls it off every time! I think that shows how the Die Hard action movies stood out from their peers. All the other action heroes at the time were these hulking beasts who are often not overlooked. McClane was the "everyday man" who can turn the switch into a badass with a sense of humor. AND YES, THIS IS A CHRISTMAS MOVIE. It is not typically "Christmassy" but I'd say saving the day is covered in the "Spirit of Christmas"
Not a Christmas movie. A Christmas movie is when the Christmas spirit comes into someone's heart and influences the outcome in some way. This is just a movie that took place at Christmas time. If Hans Gruber would have been filled with Christmas spirit and decided to turn himself in rather than rob and kill, that would have made it a Christmas movie.
Oddly enough, they're basically the same film. In both Home Alone and Die Hard, you've got a protagonist who spends Christmas Eve trying to foil a robbery and hoping to be reunited with their family for Christmas. While John McLean is pretty badass, he's nowhere near as cruel as Kevin.
How is it not a Christmas movie? It happens on Christmas Eve, there's Christmas paraphernalia , and has multiple people saying 'Merry Christmas'. It's a Christmas movie. Home Alone is about a serial killer in the making, not parental guidance.
