@@boqndimitrov8693 If you look at many of the initial reviews, it was not uniformly praised like most of Spielberg's previous films. It is still rarely mentioned or downright forgotten in the lists of his best films. I would say it's a much better film than it's been given credit for being throughout the years...thus, underrated. It is personally in my top 5 favorite Spielberg films.

When I taught 8th grade history, this was the movie I had my students watch. Jamie was close to their age so they could relate. Our society focuses so much on the European theatre of the war and I wanted them to have a visual reminder that there was another theatre as well. I love love love this movie. The visuals, the music, the acting…Christian Bale was so amazing that the National Board awarded him their first citation for best performance by a juvenile actor. And the song, he sings , Suo Gon, isaWelsh lullaby…which makes it even more powerful when he closes his eyes at the end, with the song playing. Did you notice that we never see him at rest until then? He’s always thinking and in the move. I’m so glad that you watched this and shared all your feels! I love listening to you shared your thoughts! I sure wish you’d watch “The Legend of 1900”. I am certain you would find it fascinating!

Another story i read as a "red tape" about to be banned book in elementary school. Teachers told us not to read those banned books, but i only read those for my bi-weekly book reports b/c they were so interesting and powerful. Spielburg really captured the essence of the book, but some major plots and scenes were left out... acceptable b/c the book spans the entire period of the war and occupation.

I speak japanese, when Nagata beats the medic, heavens know why they didn't sub Christian Bale, that bows and says Nagata a quite... powerful thing. "Sergeant Nagata! We are all friends here, there is no need to do this. All of it is just war's fault!!" PS. when Jamie tries to revive his japanese friend, in a frame, he is reviving his former self, obviously symbolizing the death and forsaken protrayal of a child that is no more.

I read the book - J. G. Ballard who wrote is the child - it is autobiographical and he survived internment. The Japan/China part of WW2 is hardly recognised in the West. It lasted 8 years. Up to 22,000,000 casualties and horror to match the Russian/German war that lasted 4 years. My wife is from Hong Kong, and her parents suffered through the Japanese assault and occupation, - the Japanese were not kind to the Chinese. That was followed by the civil war and Communist Cultural Revolution (she is strangely very pro British and patriotic!) Much of her extended family did not survive that combination. Loved this movie adaption, and is surprisingly faithful to the book. There is a sequel - written about his return to post war UK - he did not have an easy time of it.

It wasn't quite Bale's debut film, because previously in the same year he had appeared in the Swedish film *Mio min Mio,* released in the United States as *The Land of Faraway* ,* but it was certainly his appearance in *Empire of the Sun* that brought him to the attention of a much wider public, and it was the first in which he played the leading role.

I've been in a situation before where I was swept away by the crowd. There was no room to swing arms and my feet didn't even touch the ground. I had no control over which direction I was going. People would not have made way because everyone was so tight against each other there was no room between one person and another . It was very scary. The crowd I was in wasn't even in a panic. I think this mother seriously underestimated the situation.

Another one of my favourite films. I first watched it when I was singing the song suo gan with my choir when I was little! I feel like it is a very important film. I was maybe 11 when I saw it for the first time and the boy being my age really shocked me. Him wanting to be in the Air Force of the country he grew up in, not understanding the borders. His thoughts about luck and questions about God, his hope for his mother and parents. The horror of when he lets go of his mother's hand to collect his toy plane because that is what is important to a child. His playing and thoughts as he took in the world around him is so sad and so true.

So many people miss the symbolic ending of this film: from the moment he gets separated from his parents we NEVER see Jamie sleep, or rest. He is ALWAYS doing SOMETHING crucial to his survival or to get something. Only when he is finally reunited with his parents, and falls into his mothers arms does he close his eyes. Since the minute he lost them, he didn’t rest until he found them again. I don’t care what anyone says, there is no performance by another child actor that comes close. It is ridiculous how mature this role was, but Christian killed it. He wasn’t actually singing during the choir parts, but it doesn’t change anything. There are so called adult Oscar winners today who can’t garner such emotion in their performances today as Christian Bale did when he was 12. He is a British legend and we are proud we have him. We have the three best actors in the world. Christian Bale, Gary Oldman and David Tennant. I recommend you watch Broadchurch with David Tennant. In your own time I mean cos I’m not paying to make a request for your channel. Just watch it yourself…
