I’m Colombian and in my mid forties. To see such representation of fair and dark skinned Colombianos including the biodiversity of plants and animals native to the country just made me thrilled beyond words. All the voice actors killed it but I really liked John Leguizamo’s performance as Bruno. My mom passed away last year and she was such an amazing cook. To see people eating buñelos and arepas in brief moments in the movie brought tears to my eyes. I hope this wins some awards . Great reaction Seb…and good job on rolling the r’s.👍🏼 Happy New Year!

Its actually very subtle: her gift is the same as Abuela Alma's. She's connected to the house itself. That's why she can communicate with it, and why the house doesn't come back alive until SHE puts the doorknob in. Or, in other words, her door was the house's FRONT door!

Maribel's gift is empathy. She takes care of the family, make sure that everyone's well and feeling loved and that the house and the magic are safe. All of those things, Casita couldn't give her that gift, because she naturally had them. Also, she's like her grandmother and is most likely to become the new matriarch of the family.

One thing that someone mentioned and I can’t stop thinking about is, when Abuela is telling the story of Pedro. The version from when Mirabel is younger it’s very censored for a child, but the one when she is older shows how much anguish and pain was felt. Abuela’s reaction is very different in each one

Can we talking about Bruno being a homie? Bruno resembles his father. He's selfless, loves his family enough to separate himself from them and 'sacrifice' himself if that means that his family would be happy. Just like his father did. He was described as Seven foot frame by Camilio (shape-shifting boy) probably because he was a kid and Bruno just seemed tall to him. Plus after years of hearing bad stories about it, it probably elevated that image to about seven foot, towering, creepy man.
@TheRawrnstuff
@TheRawrnstuff 2 года назад
I believe Camilo is just teasing her. Camilo and Mirabel both canonically share the age of fifteen, so they would probably have pretty similar image in their heads of what Bruno was/is like. Yeah, Bruno is clearly taller than a five-year-old (how old Mirabel and Camilo would have been when Bruno disappeared), but I don't think Camilo would really think Bruno has a "7-foot frame". Surely they both had seen him interacting with the other adults.
@TheLoreSeeker
@TheLoreSeeker 2 года назад
@@TheRawrnstuff I took it more so that since they were both only 5...their memories of their Uncle have been tainted by 10 years of superstition and spooky stories. So Camilo is telling her his rendition of their Uncle...which paints him as a creepy dream eating monster.

To me the message was "Don't let your talent be the only thing that defines you." The point isn't "Having a special talent is bad and will make you unhappy." And I found that very refreshing. So many movies these days end up with the characters losing their powers, and I get it the message is "You are just as important without a special ability." But it mostly comes across as "Be happy to be ordinary, having anything special about you will just ruin your life." with it being repeated so many times. I loved this ending

The reconciliation scene made me cry. It's great to see someone who is old, proud and made sacrifices own up to their mistakes to someone they're supposed to be respected by, to someone who they had previously blamed for the things that went wrong. I don't see older people take responsibility often, especially in family. She did not ask forgiveness or say BUT or IF YOU HAD ONLY. She took sole responsibility and held her tongue on her pride. That's maturity to me.

I love the the different families represent different triads. Abuelta's children represent the Past (Julieta's healing is repairing past mistakes), Present (Pepa's emotions are what she is feeling at the moment), the Bruno's visions of the Future. Also, Pepa's children represent the senses: Delores' Hearing, Sight (Camilio's shapeshifting allows him to be seen in different ways) and Antonio's Speaking with animals. This also represents the See, Hear, Speak no evil. Maribel and her sisters represent Mind (Isabela always being concerned what others think about her being "perfect"...and how her power grows when she doesn't), Luisa's Body which means Maribel represents the Spirit.

Also, notice the butterfly symbolism: they’re stitched into Mirabel’s dress, and the she’s added a few more in colour herself. They’re stitched at the bottom of the Abuela’s black shawl-almost like a mourning shawl. And a butterfly is on the candle itself. The reconciliation song is about them growing up ‘out of their chrysalis’ (I.e. beyond the generational trauma (Abuela) and unhealthy expectations (Louisa, Isabela, Bruno)). Mirabel’s gift is to reunite the family by exposing the underlying weakness (cracks in the house) and bringing them together to make them whole again (one front door for everyone, rather than isolated doors).

I'm not ashamed to admit that, when the trailer came out, I wanted to watch this film for Luisa because I'm 100% a simp for a strong buff woman. HOWEVER the fact it's Colombian, has diverse characters with emotional struggles that weren't turned into jokes, and is about discussing and acknowledging generational trauma makes this film so so important. So happy you enjoyed and reacted!! Luisa stayed my favourite honestly (thank you middle child overcompensation complex that hit me wayyy too hard) and I've genuinely played Waiting On A Miracle every day for a week at least once.

the movie is about generational trauma in latino families, each of their gifts represent the role each family member plays in the family Abuela is the matriarch Julieta's healing power represents her being the one who picks up the pieces in the family Pepa's weather power represents her emotions, how they affect the family and how the family influence them Isabela is the perfect golden child, has to marry for status and to preserve the family Luisa is the eldest sister, carrying family problems on her back, resulting in pressure, stress and anxiety she wishes to break free from Dolores could be interpreted as the nosey cousin who knows everything about everyone, representing a family member who knows everyone's problems yet must keep quiet about all of them Camilo's shape shifting to me represents him being a people pleaser, changing himself according to the person or situation Bruno is the outcast, the one who doesn't typically agree with the family values, the black sheep, representing the same thing in latino families, that one relative who was exiled and we're not allowed to talk about (we see this with Hector in Coco too) Some people see Abuela as the villan. The reality is, she herself has suffered from trauma, having been chased out of her home from colonizers who also brutally murdered her husband in front of her. She had to raise triplets and make a home all by herself. Everything she did was to ensure her family would never have to go through that again, but, as is common in almost every latino household, this resulted in an insane amount of trauma, pressure, and expectations on the younger generations. The ending symbolizes breaking down that generational trauma (the broken house) and building a new foundation based on love and acceptance of every family member as they come.

"Villain" is not the term I would use for Abuela. I think the more fitting term is "Antagonist" because even loved ones can be the obstacle in the way of happiness without even realizing it due to how life has worked up until the problems become prominent.

I'm brazilian and i think that even if you're not Colombian, you can relate to Encanto because generational trauma is such a problem no matter what latino country you come from. My family lives all together like the Madrigal family, we have to deal with this things in a daily baises. It can be a lot. Even tho family is important in any part of the world, it doesn't seem to have the same weight like it have for us. That's why non latinos seem to have a more difficult time understanding that the plot is not really about Mirabel having a gift or not. We can all relate the characters to someone in our family because we see this happening everyday.

I interpret camilo as being a child forced to act as an adult by having too many responsibilities placed on him. This is exemplified by the fact that when everything starts falling apart he regresses to a baby, a thing some people traumatised into acting as an adult too early often do throughout life

9:27 "She's got such a good voice!" Yeah, she does! Can you ever imagine she was on Brooklyn 99? PLUS, when Stephanie Beatriz, Mirabel's VA, was called to record this song during the pandemic, she was 9 months pregnant and had gone into labor that morning. She was having contractions DURING the recording but didn't tell anyone bc she didn't want anyone to freak out. Less than 48 hours later, her daughter was born. She recorded "Waiting On a Miracle" while waiting for her miracle to arrive!

You are the first reactor I have seen that understood the house and town were her "door" upon first watch. Everyone else thinks she got powers or restored the powers. She is meant to be the next "Abuela". That's why she didn't get a door inside the house as a child.

I have been watching Encanto on repeat for days And just been singing all the songs on repeat especially "we don't talk about Bruno". Encanto is awesome and has such a beautiful lesson...the miracle is YOU not some gift just you and I love that. But it wasn't about not having gifts, it was about showing that the gifts aren't all they are. That's why Mirabel got none but now Mirabel is like the candle, even though she had no gift she is what holds the family together. The miracle wasn't the candle, it was the love for not just the gifts but the person behind the gift. Or at least that's how I see it.

I assume Mirabel's powers are in line with the grandmother's- a connection to the miracle itself, the house, and the protected place they live (perhaps hinting she'll eventually be stepping into the grandmother's family role when Abuela passes) My favorite character is Bruno, I feel like I have a lot in common with him as someone misunderstood. I'm a very practical, pragmatic woman so sometimes I give advice to my friends & family or "predict" consequences of someone's actions that seem like common sense to me, but it sometimes gets mistaken as me not caring about their feelings or wishing those things would happen. Like warning a cousin taking back a cheating bf that "once a cheater, always a cheater." First I get accused of being insensitive towards her heartbreak for being cheated on, then a couple months later when he does cheat again I get accused of having wanted that to happen even though I was trying my best to warn her against taking him back at all. Yeah, definitely feeling the Bruno character.

One thing that few people noticed is that when Mirabel is standing in front of Abuela who is holding the candle, she offers her the candle for Mirabel to touch and proceeds to touch the doorknob that would be hers, but before touching the doorknob, Mirabel passes her hands over her own clothes, that is, she passes the miracle of the candle on herself. She becomes the candle, her handle is herself.

This is the theory that Maribel has the same Don as the grandmother, to deliver gifts and communicate with the house, in addition to keeping the family together, she did not receive her door as a child because perhaps the grandmother saw it more as a duty, more than from the heart, so it was because of the grandmother, while with the cousin, as Maribel believed in him, he gave him the gift, apart from the fact that the candle represented how fragile the miracle of the grandmother was, while in the end the miracle of Mirabel is represented with the Door, which comes to indicate that it is strong, for the next generations of the Door, which comes to indicate that it is strong, for the next generations of the family, well all that is theory, but it is nice to think that 💜

i thought her gift was seeing things in others they couldn't see in themselves. if you rewatch the movie, take note of every time you hear the word "see", it's almost always connected to mirabel. she's also the only one with glasses. I originally thought it could also be connected to her name as Mirar (conjugated to mira) can mean "to watch" in Spanish, but Mirabel actually means "wonderous"

Nothing to prevent it from meaning both. I noted her glasses were green, tying her special sight to the green top of her seer uncle Bruno.

The story for me us less about "you're fine without your gifts" and more about "you are more than what you have to offer others". Luisa was stressed out of her mind worrying that she'd have to carry every family and village berdan for the rest of her life, Isabella was always trying to be perfect to uphold the family's stature in the community, Julietta was constantly cooking enough food every day to feed an entire village worth of sick and injured and Pepa had to have constant and complete control over her emotions go help the community as well. They were existing only to keep other people happy and not just living for themselves, which is a sad way to be. Allowing that generational trauma to be broken and showing everyone the way back to the lives they deserve is Mirabel's true gift 🥰 I have no doubt that if they make a second film it's going to be about her becoming the new family matriarch

Stephanie Beatriz was actually in labour while recording "Waiting on a Miracle" but at first she didn't know, then once she realized she was in the middle of recording and didn't want to panic anyone, so didn't say anything.

If you go back to ,,We don't talk about Bruno song" during Dolores part, she actually hints that she knows that Bruno is in the house and doesn't talk bad about him. Also in same part when Dorores is singing there for Mirabel, you can actually see Bruno walking in the background of ground floor and then on first floor. He was even vibing there with song about him, swinging his head to music.

Lin Manuel Miranda did the songs for this movie. Probably best known for Hamilton (which I would reccommend - also on Disney Plus). If you want more I would also suggest "In the Heights" another Lin Manuel Miranda musical as well as "Tick Tick Boom". Music is by Jonathan Larson but Lin directed the film.

I don't know a single person who's seen this who A) HASN'T already watched it multiple times, and B) HASN'T started listening to the soundtrack on repeat. I have coworkers who _haven't even seen it yet_ who know the words to the songs, because they're topping the charts everywhere. As to your question, I _definitely_ relate to Luisa the most! I love all of them, but definitely Luisa for me.

Seb, sure someone pointed it out; but Doloros outright talks about the fact that she hears him during "we dont talk about Bruno" and than further confirms it at the finale about "[she] heard it every day".

I must say, I’ve never cried while watching a Disney movie (almost during the Lion King but not completely) but this movie was so good and emotional (I think we all do have some similar problems in our own families, for me it’s my grandma for who I will never be good enough like my sister even tho I try to be here for her more often). Plus the cinematography, songs and great characters make it easily one of my 3 most favorite Disney movies (and defenetly the best Disney movie from this century).

20:48 "I'm just waiting for her to hear the pin drop, that he's in the house." In Dolores' part in "We Don't Talk About Bruno," she says "I CAN ALWAYS HEAR HIM sort of muttering and mumbling, I associate him with the sound of falling sand," meaning she could hear him muttering to himself in the walls and the "sand" was probably him throwing salt over his shoulder because he's so superstitious. She also says "It's like I hear him now; I can hear him now, I CAN HEAR HIM NOW." So when she says she knew he was there the whole time, she means it. Now: Why didn't she say anything to the family? My guess is that she either thought she was going crazy with the pressure of knowing EVERYONE's secrets at all times, and thought she was just imagining it. OR, as some fans have theorized, she kept it a secret because she listened in on the "telenovelas" he put on for himself with his rat friends. If she had given him away, she wouldn't have heard the ends of the stories and she likes the DRAMA lol. Also, the family relies on her to tell them all the gossip in town, and to have just this one secret to herself that she didn't have to tell anybody must have felt relieving for her.

Favorite character… Luisa. As a Mexican American who takes care of her father… I’m expected to do all for my father. My child followed her dreams and is working where she dreamed of as a child, half way across the country. I take care of my dad while I get help from a few of my four siblings and a single nephew out of his many grandchildren. Luisa has to take on the pressure of family and it’s expected by all of those around her…

I figured it out guys! The house loves mirabel so much that he didn’t want her to have her own room cause he can’t go in their rooms or whatever.. like Bruno’s room.. so her staying in the nursery meant the house could work as a team with her on the daily! Her house is her gift and that’s why instead of getting a room she got the front door and brought life back to the house! :P just a silly fun theory

Did you know? In the song 'We don't talk about Bruno' everyone say's mean stuff about him all but one. The one is Dolorous since she has super hearing so she must off heard Bruno and everything. Bonus! But this also could lead to her being the villian if she could hear Bruno why didn't she told her family? If she did the family and Bruno could be back as a family!! And not going through house crashing and all that!!

This movie has a beautiful message that everyone is special, no matter what. As a Latin American guy, I'm happy to see this movie getting so much attention. I love how well they've mixed English and Spanish here. Even though I'm not Colombian, this movie made me so happy with its representation. And I can see in other comments that Colombian people is proud with it so that is something well-made.

I've been thinking about why Mirabel didn't get a gift. There's the theory that Casita knew she would be more helpful to the family without one, but I've also considered that Julieta's side of the family seems to bear more stress and a sense of responsibility than Pepa's. Pepa and her kids' gifts are centered around their emotional and social traits, while Julieta and her kids have gifts that they actively use to help others and project an image (in the case of Isabella). I think that level of pressure was too much for little Mirabel, who didn't know what she wanted to be other than just a useful part of her amazing family. Because her heart is centered on family, the house itself is more centered on her than the others (outside of Abuela) and it couldn't give her more than that.
