The first time I saw this movie as a kid, I was super impressed by the decision to have Hiccup lose a leg after his fight with the dragon, especially in a kids film produced by Dreamworks. It creates an interesting parallel to Toothless, since they're the same now.
Also disability representation for kids! I can imagine that it felt good for any physically disabled kid to see an amputee main character in a popular franchise! Edit: I forgot, there are also lots of other amputee characters of all ages and genders, as well as strong female characters in every movie that are integral to the story Edit 2: omg this movie keeps unfolding sorry lmao but this movie also shows how people with a common problem (i.e. being disabled) can work together to become strong and face adversity. Not only is this movie fabulously made, it's an important movie for ALL ages.
It's also pretty smart because it was Hiccups fault that Toothless only has one tail wing when he tried to captire him and Hiccup lost his foot because Toothless bit it when he tried to safe him at the end and grabbed him, so you could say they're even now. I think he mentions that in the second movie as well.
as a disabled person who became disabled in my teens, i ADORED the fact they made hiccup lose his leg. it just meant a lot to see a kids character who’s the HERO have some sort of disability, and even one we see happen as well that isn’t framed in a very pitying way. not to mention he learned to adapt for toothless’ disability which just so happens to mirror his own, and they can take on the world together as disabled buddies doing cool shit. i still haven’t seen any of the other movies, but i know i need to sometime because i’ve heard at least the trilogy is really good
Similar for me. I lost my dad when I was 16 about the same time the second movie came out and I was at a real dark and cynical place. Seeing something bad happen in movies is great I think, because in real life there's also not always a happy end
Damn. So many people miss that one crucial bit that makes Stoick a great character. Right after he says "You're not my son" and leaves. You missed the absolutely _crushing_ guilt he felt. He literally _staggered back_ with what he'd just said, before pushing on to leave.
I was absolutely devastated in the second movie when Stoick died. I loved the fact that a side character had a fully completed arc, and that he accepted his sons difference. Lovely character
@@fabra1122 To be fair, it came out in 2014. More than enough time for most to watch it by now. Of course, there's plenty of people who haven't seen any of them, but still.
Should we be worried Dylan is writing detailed scenarios between he and his inanimate friends? But then again, at least he's writing something for a change.
OH TRUEE! I re-watched the trilogy yesterday and thought why does Hiccup sounds familiar and search for the one that do the voice of hiccup in case I hear him in the other film and it's not... and it's turn out it feels familiar because it's Dylan voice😂
i was just screaming in my head when he was saying he wanted the lore built out into an (adult) series and I'm like...we get (most) of that!!!! It's a great series damnit!
Dylan: "If you adopted a dog that was missing a leg, you wouldn't call it Legless." Me, who used to have a legless dog named Peggy, named after her peg leg: "Yeah, you tell them!"
One of my cat was born with a blind eye so I named her toph (a blind character) and once they removed it (because it had an infection that could have been dangerous) my brother started calling her scarface 😭
12:12 it's actually for aerodynamic purposes. When flying at high speeds, the teeth make the skull unnecessarily thicker, retracting them gives night fury's a good 2-3 inches less.
in the book series, he only has one tooth, hence 'toothless'. but i get how they needed to work around that to still make him mysterious and terrifying
@@summerevening421 As I recall, he didn't have any teeth in the books, retractable or otherwise. I believe that the riddle of the king's lost things mentions that he's a "fang-free dragon"
Honestly for a animated movie I’d have expected some name like “Pip pip” In fact in this day and age giving cute names to Monstrous things is seen more as a compliment, especially if it’s given more character depth, then the silly name is respected more and becomes so epic with context to the story
@@TheKpa11 Well, HTTYD was based off of a book series originally. The books are a lot different but toothless is the name of the main dragon, and Hiccup is the name of the main character. Otherwise though, they pretty much changed all the names and characters.
In my 21 years of life, I have never, EVER, thought the Dreamworks kid was “whipping it out” until today. Now, I’ll never be able to unsee it. Thanks, Dylan🙃
"if you adopted a dog that was missing a leg you wouldnt name him Legless" Me thinking about my family cat named Tripod... Edit: I need you guys to know that I now have a dog whose nickname is Yards. Because he only has 3 feet.
lmfao me too ahahaha we had a dog named tripod (although she had all her legs, she was just missing a foot from birth, so in retrospect.... we were wrong in that regard ahahaha)
not only is hiccup losing a leg a parallel to toothless losing half his tail, toothless bit it off when trying to save him so he could shield him from the fire, like hiccup's trap cut the tail off at the start! i rewatched the film a few months ago and the lore is so much more complex with underlying meanings and messages than i picked up on as i kid i genuinely love this film
Oh, that makes so much sense, I always thought that he lost his leg because of the fire, wich didn't made sense to me since he was falling of head first. Thank you so much, love that detail
I didn’t realize Toothless bit it off! I always assumed his leg was so severely burned that they ended up having to amputate it. That’s so interesting!
I saw the third movie one night in the theatres. The audience where all around 18-30 years old. I have never seen so many grown men cry (except for End game). I have never cried so much to a movie haha. One guy in front of me could not breathe bc he was bawling his eyes out. Saw him after the movie with his group of friends, still bawling his eyes out, them comforting him, he between his breath ”I... can’t... stop crying..” Love this movie
The first few times I watched the trailer for the third movie I cried of happines(I was 19 in my first year of uni). The third one was also the only one I watched in cinema and it was SO worth it
God I still remember watching the first movie in the cinema when I was 9, and watching the final film 10 years later really had me bawling. It's like the epitome of coming-of-age films and I feel really lucky I got to grow up alongside the characters and relate to their struggles.
When I saw this movie in theatres when I was a kid I was confused about how Hiccup would lose his leg when falling into a fire. but then the more Ive watched it the more I’ve come to realize that it was actually Toothless who takes his leg in order to save him. and that is another layer to their relationship as Hiccup is implied to be the one who takes Toothless’s wing. so when both are walking outside together at the end both are carrying the disability the other gave them and are then able to come together and be more than they were before.
Dylan: this fight is boring the dragon doesn’t even move god dragon: *starts flying* Dylan: this isn’t even possible let’s get the physics majors up in here
this movie didn’t necessarily focus on loss, but the sequel and 3rd definitely are darker and deal with death and loss. the end of the 3rd movie will forever be one of my favorite cinematic moments in animation. i hope dylan reacts to 2 and 3 because they were just as good as this one.
@@Hime0love To be fair, he doesn't need to watch the series, you can easily follow along without it, plus the series has some pretty low budget animation
Ok i gotta interject.... HTTYD 3 was by far not as good as 1 and 2 imo. It was way too predictable.... plus.... 👉👈🥺 I was hoping Hiccup and Toothless' kids would grow up together.....
I think some of the shadowy lumps in the background of the scene where Stoick thinks Hiccup is gone are pieces of the big dragon. It's just too smoky to see the gore very clearly, which I'm sure was intentional.
The idea of Astrid being a villian is a great concept. They really diluted her character in the other movies, but omg IMAGINE if they were lovers to enemies.
I wonder how they would've written the story with that concept of Astrid being the antagonist of the movie. It would change a huge part of the series and the plots we see definitely wouldn't be the same. We would probably see Astrid tell Stoick about Hiccup and Toothless, instead of keeping his secret and helping him. That itself would change a lot and poses some interesting questions as to what this version would look like. Would Toothless still be captured or would we see Hiccup running off to escape with Toothless? If they escape, where would they go and what would be their next step? Would we still see the nest in this version? If Toothless isn't captured, how would they find the nest? Would the other teenagers still help Hiccup? Would Stoick continue to despise dragons or would he still have a moment where how he sees them changes? What is the reason Astrid hates/dislikes Hiccup (Are her parents pushing her to become a great dragon hunter and Hiccup is getting in the way of that? Did a family member get killed by a dragon?), what is her motivation? It is definitely an interesting concept, though in my opinion would be a totally different movie/series. I am sorry about the rambling, it just got me think about what that would've looked like.
The little animation of Stoick getting almost lightheaded after telling Hiccup he wasn’t his son is just amazing. That one animation turned Stoick from an irredeemable asshole to a misguided man blinded by pride and tradition who still has the ability to change. Obviously it doesn’t hit for everyone but it gets the message across for most. This is the Dreamworks I miss. This is one of the few movies I truely consider 10 out of 10, every fiber of it is made with genuine love and care for the characters and storytelling. And don’t worry Dylan, if you didn’t feel like you could feel the size of the queen dragon just wait for the next film :)
I really liked Toothless’s interactions with Stoick in this film, especially near the end. It really adds to show that dragons are capable of complex thought like humans are. Stoick had been nothing but hostile towards both Toothless and Hiccup (that Toothless had witnessed), so he had no reason to save Stoick at the end. Saving him anyway proved that the dragons aren’t mindlessly evil. Plus the callback to the flying scene with Astrid too. Toothless didn’t reveal Hiccup was safe until Stoick had apologized for his actions.
Man, this series is so cool! They have over 160 different species of dragons in this series/world and it’s crazy to think someone sat down and thought up all of them
I feel like it isn't talked about enough because the stunning visuals and just overall phenomenal story telling kind of overshadows it slightly, but the score in the background is easily one of the best movie soundtracks I have ever heard. It easily gives me this sense of youth and adventure that a lot of movies I've seen attempt to capture without much luck. It's nothing short of amazing. And they just keep getting better and better through each movie, fitting the mood and storyline shift for each one.
I only disagree that it "isn't talked about enough." I feel like whenever I've discussed this movie with people, the music is one of the first things people mention. Who doesn't love Test Drive? It's amazing.
Dreamworld for me has a lot of good soundtracks and storylines my favorite as a kid was spirit. It’s such a good movie and it addresses the history of America without avoiding the things that went down between the native Americans and the army.
When Dylan mentioned hiccup being the dragon itself… that would lead that universe in an interesting alternate direction. Imagine if the father never knew, nor did hiccup. Some people having that ability to shapeshift while other of the dragons are more wild since they cannot.
it's a pretty obvious plot, everyone called it and was waiting for it (with glee cause that shits awesome) ever since they made it clear that toothless was the "last" night fury. there's never a "last" anything in kid's media 💀
I think the sequel is arguably as solid as the first with even more advanced visuals, so I'm looking forward to Dylan's reaction to it if he does continue the franchise!
1:54 Dylan, if the wooden door was burnt once, it doesn't easily catch fire the second time. This pre-burning of wood was used many times in the past, to prevent fire spreading through a whole village or a city.
@@doubledorkCrawf0rd which is why some old fire doors are literally just very thick pieces of wood. As long as they last long enough to starve the fire of oxygen it won't come through. Plus have people tried lighting a very large lump of wood on fire before? its not that easy.
”Did they set up anything in the beginning to kill a massive dragon?" Technically yes since to pass the dragon training's final exam is to kill a dragon. Even though Hiccup didn't do it the way it was expected, by the end of the movie he did end up killing a dragon.
I especially love how they built the lore into the story telling. If you pay attention, one of the training scenes actually set up the win against the queen. When Gobbler explained about the two-headed dragon, that one head produces gas while another lights it, it was actually setting up the fact that dragon fire works by producing a gas that they light in fire. Then, the scene with the tiny dragon showing they're not fireproof on the inside. Meaning that when they fought the queen, Hiccup had to wait until the queen had produced the gas, which you can see if you pay attention, and made Toothless shoot before the queen could light it up-making the gas turn to fire while it was still inside the queen, and turning her into basically a huge hot air balloon filled with burning gas that exploded when she hit the ground. It's why they waited until the has was built up before Toothless actually shot at her and it's brilliant storytelling.
There is at least one type of dragon whose fire isn't produced that way; the Monstrous Nightmare's spit ignites when in contact with air. That's how they can coat themselves in flames, and that also explains both the things that confused Dylan in the early fight scene: the rock itself wasn't burning, just the goo that the dragon spat on it, and the "lava" on the pillar that Dylan thought was melting iron was in fact more of the same goo.
“You could take over the world with an army of dragons!”. Dylan, With that one comment right there, I hope you eventually watch the second one in your life and remember you said that. You’d probably love the second one from that right there
One thing I really love about this movie is the game between Hiccup and Toothless. When Hiccup ends up standing right next to the dragon, he takes a chance to pet him, but Toothless hesitates to let him. Then, Hiccup closes his eyes and looks away, while reaching out his hand. This... is an act of TRUST!!!! Hiccup is basically saying, "I trust that you will not hurt me if only you trust me, too. Because I don't want to hurt you anymore." Dreamworks has created a masterpiece
not sure if anyone cares lmao but on top of it being an act of trust for both characters, this is also the case with other animals, particularly horses which I imagine the team knew since the dragons' movements mimic other real animals. people are divided on if this is true or not but if to be believed: if you want to pet one and it isn't very used to humans, to show you're not a threat and respect its space, you have to use submissive body language at first - you aren't supposed to approach quickly head-on unless it's one that knows you well. you want to avoid hard eye contact and approach near their shoulders/side and watch for their comfortability before touching.
I really hope Dylan watches the second and third one too because at the end it kinda looked like he was put off by it turning into a "franchise", and I know it's easy to assume that it's probably turned into another cashgrab series but it's really not. I haven't watched the shows personally, but the main HTTYD Trilogy is insanely good so I really hope he considers watching the other two movies as well.
you gotta remember that he doesn't watch these movies to actually enjoy them, he watches them to find little flaws and then complain about them for as long as he can lol. I'm sure there are plenty of other youtubers who actually give genuine reactions on this movie rather than use them as click bait to tell forced jokes lol
I love the whole HTTYD Franchise so far. Even the shows do a good job showing how the time passes and how the shows/series lead into the plot of the next movie.
Well.. I've seen him complain and beg for it to be over. This wasn't a hate to watch clearly, he said exactly the words "I love this" and praised the worldbuilding in it with the different dragon species and small details in the movie. He doesn't need to take everything seriously, like you said there are many others that do movie reactions/commentaries where they praise the movies, its a matter of preference, if his way isn't your cup of tea it's ok😊
something i really love about toothless' personality that you might have not noticed is the fact that somehow this dragon understands the concept of aknowledging your wrongs and saying sorry. when he meets astrid he only starts being nice to her after she apologizes to hiccup during the flight scene, thats when he switches to a flight mode much more pleasing. this also happens at the end of the film when the father and rest of the village think that toothless wasnt able to save hiccup from the fires explosion. toothless only opens his wings to reveal hiccups actually safe when his father shows true regret and says sorry. this film is filled with little details that you only notice after watching it a hundred times (like i did) or after someone tells you and thats why i never get tired of watching it
I kind of wonder if he learned that from Hiccup. Hiccup is always apologizing! Even in the Forbidden Friendship scene, he's constantly backing off whenever Toothless gets defensive.
I really hope he does the second and third as well, because his predictions are on point. And I’m sure I’m not the only one that wants the series as well, but that’s probably not gunna happen.
Literally every time he said he wanted something to happen or predicted something, I was just like “pleaseeee everything you want is literally in the second movie”
It's honestly the best Western animation film series to ever exist! Amongst the likes of Ice Age and Shrek film series, HTTYD actually managed to pull off not just one or two, but all THREE movies! Out of all the garbage we've seen, this is seriously quite the commendable feat ngl!
@@tegztegz It was so brave of dreamworks to allow the characters in an animated kids' franchise to grow up and become adults, since usually kids' characters are left the same age forever just to make the most profit for as long as possible. But with HTTYD, the kids who saw the first movie in 2010 got to really grow up with the characters over the span of almost 10 years, and as one of those kids, it was super special to see the last film at 21 years old and bawl my eyes out when it ended, realising that I had also grown up. The whole trilogy is just so refreshing and wonderful.
how to train your dragon is such an amazing franchise, each movie gets better and better and the world building and lore is fantastic. they really stand out amongst 'kids' movies. you should definitely check out the other two movies!
As a long time fan of HTTYD and was (still have bits from the trilogy and TV show) well versed in the dragon biology and ecosystem, it was fun to see the love for the worldbuilding biology of dragons.
It’s actually very interesting when you point out that Hiccup being able to control a dragon should be considered convenient and not as horrible as the father makes it to be, but eventually in the sequel it will be explained thoroughly why the dad acted as such when he finds out Hiccup’s secret. It comes full circle pretty dang nicely in my opinion ps. yes dreamworks def milked the franchise with the tv shows, but the movies were always made with a trilogy in mind since the very first!
I mean, if you're reffering to riders of berk and race to the edge i think its unfair to degrade them to just a cash grab. The amount of expanding lore, character development and intresting characters they added has a lot of value. Sure some of it doesn't entierly fit with the movies but still. The series detailing what happened between the 5 year time skip had a lot of thought put into it. However, if you're reffering to rescue riders.. i haven't watched it so i can't say for sure, but i can see what you mean if thats the show you're reffering to.
Riders and defenders of Berk were okay but Race to the Edge was fantastic. The villains were good, especially Viggo, and it filled in the huge jump between the first 2 movies. Also, in a movie, they can only give the supporting characters so much screen time as they have less time and need to focus on the main character. The TV shows helped to flesh out the secondary characters a lot more
I loved both those series they introduced a lot of lore, new dragons, kept two of the main cast members and introduced my favorite character, Dagur the Deranged
Little does Dylan know, there are two sequels, a special talking about different dragons, and two shows (one was on Cartoon Network and one on Netflix). Also, the movie series is based off of a book series. This for Dylan if he sees it for if he wants to continue the franchise…
Loved this commentary, but as a very loyal fan of the HTTYD series, I would like to enter the conversation: Hiccup doesn't conquer dragons, he doesn't enslave them (not like some villains further along in the series), and the reason why he was the only one who could tame them, was because he was the only one who was shown the intelligence and the love and loyalty dragons can feel and developed techniques to create a bond of trust. Both equals in the relationship. Toothless isn't a pet, he allows Hiccup on his back because he trusts him.
so we arent gonna talk about how dylan just chatted through the test drive like it wasn't the best scene in movie history. I still put that song in earphones before a family event to channel power. IT IS SO GOOD!
They really should've shot the Big Dragon scenes in a way that captured less than 30% of it's body at any moment to kinda emphasis "wow it can even fit in camera it's so big". Or they should have a dragon or person in shot next to it at all times for a reference
i absolutely like watching dylan watching bad movies and rant about them but watching him watching movies he enjoys? (rapunze, atlantis, … ) absolutely LOVE that
HTTYD is easily one of the best animated franchises out there. I'd put it up against many live-action ones, too. I'm happy to see you enjoying this one! The lore is SO interesting, and the creativity with the different kinds of dragons is off the chain. I was caught off guard a few times, because Dylan sounds a lot like Jay Baruchel (Hiccup) so it was like "wait, what, Hiccup doesn't say that!"
I fell in love with this franchise as a kid, the world and lore is SO GOOD, and the story is really solid to boot. It's also nice how I grew up with it and the characters. I was mindblown after I found out that there are even water dragons. One of these can electrify others and eats dragons that fall on water, which is the reason why most species don't like eels, since they're "weaker" versions of these dangerous water dragons.
Every time Dylan waxes poetic about his preferred murder tangents I just crack up so hard. Dylan gleefully predicting Hiccup's vengeance upon his village at 18:20 is hysterical
I’m glad Dylan loves the different dragons aspect of this movie, that was also my favorite part, and I wished someone wrote a series about just the dragons for years. MAKE IT HAPPEN SOMEONE PLEASE
@@ZukoHalliwell u can add humans if u want, just dont make them the focal point like they are in these movies, the dragons are way more interesting and theres so much potential with different breeds
@@TransparentEclipse There is actually a serie that focus more in showing other types of dragons and their powers and how to really train them. The name is "Race to the edge"
The point of the movie was that a young boy learns compassion that he wasn’t taught I don’t think this movie would’ve been a successful if the main character was a girl mainly because we have so many movies with female characters based on compassion and friendship but seeing a male main character fight for something he believes in without violence is really empowering and creates a Universal message
@@mayakane9978 you mean like,,, with men being emotional? Because there are a lot of stories with men, but they're always manly men, dealing with emotional baggage in non healthy ways, yadda yadda. Do you mean there aren't a lot of stories where men are shown to be emotional, compassionate, happy, etc?
@@thirstaefortae5057 huh, you know this is giving me middle school flashbacks to when my english teacher told me the exact same thing, I thought I learned my lesson and yet here I am. Anyways thanks for reminding me, maybe I had segway on the mind since I just rewatched mall cop, lol.
Watching how much Dylan loves all the dragons that aren't even IN this movie just makes me really hope he'll react to the other two as well! It's a freaking masterpiece of a triology. Plus us HTTYD fans just know Dylan would love the Death Song
"Why would you call him Toothless just because he can retract his teeth. You wouldn't call a dog that was missing a leg 'Legless'." Me, who named my three-legged dog, Tripod: 😥
Everyone here is talking about how symbolic this movie is and I'm just sitting here waiting for you to watch the other movies and see the MASSIVE glowup hiccup and astrid got
Are their voices changing too? I watched the german version where hiccup first has a ''late teen'' voice. Like ... deep and nearly the adult state, but still you hear, that it is a teenager. And in the last movie he and Astrid sound so adult ....
I foresee Dylan becoming the biggest fan of this movie series. After doing the commentary on HTTYD 2 and 3 he‘s going to fall in love with the tv series where they explore all the dragon species. Yes Dylan, there are 6 incredible seasons. Welcome to the fanclub!
Omg that woul be so cool, I hope he'll react to them, they were everything to me when I was a kid Oh and don't forget the four seasons of riders of Berk
HTTYD is just such a solid trilogy. so much love was put into the other 2 movies and their plots, they feel like passion proects instead of cash grabs (unlike the shows). plus they get better w each movie which i feel like is rare when it comes to animation
Love how dylan is constantly questioning if the queen dragon could physically fly, but absolutely ignores the bodz weight wing portion of the 14:53 dragon 😂
The way that dragon flies is like how a bee does tho 😂😂 and bees do not fly like birds. The way this dragon flapped its wings is different (it’s more rapid js like bees) from the queen dragon who flaps her wings slower.
But he killed it to save the lives of his people and to set the other dragons free. If it hadn't attacked him or his family, he wouldn't have had any reason to kill it.
@@elizabethdonner5240 That conclusion now seems ridiculous to me now that I know the real reason. If his foot had to be amputated because of the fire and he fell head first he'd be dead. I never connected the fact hiccup's foot was the first thing toothless could reach.
Physics major here. I made a lot of estimations, and I mean a LOT, but ultimately I got that a dragon of that size should have wings that are about 600 times larger than the ones it has in order to be able to fly (not considering whether or not it’d be able to move those wings, of course). So yeah, unlikely. Some things that could potentially make it possible for such a large being to fly: a higher air density, a lower gravitational pull, having a ridiculously low mass, having jet engines.
Dragons; Race to the Edge is actually a pretty good show. It takes place between movies 1 and 2 and actually explains a lot about how they advanced during that time and explores all sorts of dragon lore. Cool show.
Don’t forget Dragons:Race to the edge is part of the series started with Riders of Berk and Defenders of Berk which would basically make those two the first two seasons, most people haven’t watched them cause they are not on Netflix but they also explore the lore and the first two years in between the first move and Race to the edge, you basically can’t fully understand Heather’s, Johan’s and Dagur’s plotlines without watching those
I LOVE everything about this movie from the score, the characters, the animation, the storytelling it’s all beautiful and you can really see how much work they put into it
His rant at the 24 mintue mark is literally exactly what the villain in the later movies is all about; *controlling* the dragons and using them for war and gaining more power, while abusing them at the same time.
My biggest problem that I have always had with Stoick, its the part where Hiccup is in the cage with Hookfang. Anyone watching obviously could see that the dragon was calm and focused ON Hiccup. So Stoick instead of, idk, sending people down there to stop the "fight" and tying Hookfang down like he wanted, he HAMMERED DOWN on the railing of the cage making noise which as they know confuses the dragons and ticks them off. So not only did he put his son and his people in so much danger there, later when the whole scene passes and they are arguing he has the audacity of saying Hiccup put everyone in danger (yk because of Toothless being there). And much like Dylan said he ignored what Hiccup was saying about the nest and going there anyway, and putting his whole village in danger because really what did he expect going there? Even if there was no queen, there must've been thousands if not millions of dragons there in that nest vs a village with a population of about 1000 people. He wasn't the best father in this movie but he definitely redeemed himself later on.
